Space Engineers Solar Panels

- Ever thought you disliked solar panels because to power something you need a LOT of them? A very big and ugly blob of solar panels that just gets in the way? For giggles I built a rig with 282 panels that can be compacted to use the space of about 60 panels. Practical use? Probably not, right? Clang isn't a fan, but nothing's exploded yet!
I'm so so impressed that you can build such complicated structure on a pole that is on ONE bloc thick. ONE mistake, ONE bullet, ONE grinder hit, and the entire thing is down.
I would further increase the "folding" of the structure and make it so that the pillar itself on which the panels are held also folds and the whole structure goes underground. This would be very helpful when playing in a meteor shower world.
Сань, не неси хуйню, нормальные инженеры ебашут плоскость 100 на 100 блоков со стороны метеоритного дождя и не парятся по этому поводу
*Clang would like to know your location*
It wouldn’t make much of a difference since the shower would be over before wir was done with how slow it is and if you go faster clang is going to make you cry
I had an extending folding solar array on my asteroid base. It worked, sort of - but after a while it would get the shakes and clang out.
Just use turrets
The fact that clang has allowed this is beautiful
This is the Klang Blossom, his chosen flower.
judging by the amount of solar panels on the ground below,,, he didnt..
This is amazing, how do you keep them so steady and not wobbling out of the solar system? Ive done simple 2 axis rotating solar panels that follow the sun rotation, but they always invite klang to their structural integrity.
tried sharing inertia tensors on rotors?
dont know what does this even mean but it removed most of the wobbling in my grids with moving parts
@@tetrisgonzo37 treats it like one body in physics iirc
Less freaking out by the garbage engine ensues
Erm well stable enough clearly wasn't at times evident on amount solar panels on ground
@@tetrisgonzo37 basically literally it shares inertia between 2 connected grids, they literally seems 1 single one if it's just one rotor or 1 piston, but if you have too many subgrids they will still wobble a bit
You should find a way to make that sideways instead so it creates an arch. Then make it so when it retracts and closes up it goes into the ground and hides away. Really cool design though the algorithm for UA-cam made me look at it.
The Clang is strong with this one.
Clang?
@@RoxyGotMoxy. Basically, the physics engine sticking the middle finger at any creation that uses rotors like this.
Subgrids on subrids do not usually end well for the build if they are built incorrectly.
Essentially, this became way too frequent that people called this "Angering Clang" (Clang, because the unstable grids made a clanging sound).
Clang is both respected and feared, for it shall either give you incredible power, or destroy everything in a 700m radius... if it is 'normal' pissed.
By incredible power, I mean Clang weaponry that can launch projectiles 3 times over the speed limit, Clang driven engines with incredible acceleration from virtually nothing, or make things like the video shows.
Downside is that they're very unstable.
Clang weapons/cannons can destroy whatever it's mounted to, Clang drives need a crap ton of gyros alone to just keep it stable and going in one direction, and Clang creations can explode(literally) and shred anything and everything nearby.
Hawk, 280/60= 4.6
you got a method of making a portable solar farm that can expand and reduce its surface area by 5 times. this is incredible
As someone who is currently learning about rotors, hinges, pistons, and timer blocks after playing for years(like before planets had enemies or drones kinda years) I am IMPRESSED. The spacing, the timing, the relatively low amount of shake.. I can't imagine how long it took going through the all the sliders making sure everything worked as intended and clang free.
I have been playing before planets were even a thing 👴🏻
@@paskky913I have been playing before ship building was a thing 🪦
@@paskky913I've played before it was on Steam ^^
I can see something like this on a large ship or space station.
I can hear the physics engine screaming, lol
(Great build though)
How have Clang not claimed this creation?
Probably built in creative mode with lots of cut and paste. Also it's probably barely been used. Clang might have claimed this thing 20 times and we wouldn't know it. The player just ctrl+v and paste in the one that didn't explode and try again.
this is 1.) awesome! and 2.) being saved on a playlist for reference!
Nice job! The trick to stop Clang is to have share inertial dampening on everything but the first rotor, piston, or hinge. Whatever the sub grid is after the first mechanical part you put down first. That first object is attached to the ground or a base. It doesn't need to be stabilized. Everything after that dose.
Just a little of advice on the subject.
Will this stop the shaking? Just discovered how to make turrets and that shake annoys the fuck outta me lol
@@justsomeguy1136 It should, I build my turrets in a double orientation and use this method. The only thing I don't put share inertial dampening on is the first advanced rotor I place. Then I put down a 3x3 rotor part on top of that. I put a conveyor junction on that with the large ports to the side. I attach 2 3x3 rotors to each side. When I am done with my custome turret. I have 16 warfare gatling guns 8 on each side. With 2 small grid turret controllers on the back of each side. Only one controls the base. This works really well. When the drones show up if you play with Assertive mods or other mods where your base is attacked. These turrets rip things apart in seconds. You do need to have the ammo for them to stay stocked up though. 😁😏👍
They will chew through the bullets!
@@JAY-fq7sb thank you!!! I really want to get better at building. I fucking love this game and need to get better at making angles and the script like stuff like this.
looks incredible, almost like a solar sail, good job
Mesmerising, useful, and even somewhat stable.
Thank you for sharing it.
Potential improvement idea: have a merge block on the end of the piston arm to connect it with the rest of the body of the ship to reduce wobble once its unfolded (and something similar for when folded).
I'd totally use this on a ship to hide my panels under the armour and unfold to recharge.
This is not actually wobbling when unfolded because the current hinge bug is making the hinges too weak to move until the pistons start coming in lol. But yeah, probably a very good idea to lock both ends in place under normal circumstances.
@@xLadyHawkx I can certainly see a bit of wobble at 1:28
Regardless, awesome design.
Is anyone else thinking 'APERTURE SCIENCE' when you see that unfold... lol
It's beautiful and very effective. Awesome job!
This would clang me the hell out if I would do half of it.
The icing on the cake is the pile of solar panels at the bottom of the build
name suggestion: The Solar Axe
Absolutely gorgeous design
Great design! I love the pile of dead solar panels underneath though :)
When I looked at thumbnail I imitiedly thought about those round roll out solar panels used in some missions(for example Cygnus).
And I'm not disappoint, great work.
me over here wondering how may times Lord Klang said hello :-)
the pile of solar panels on the ground is suggestive.
All of that supported by nothing but a 1x1 light armor tower. Classic Space Engineers risking everything on the 1 support
Would love to have something compact like this to charge a ship!
Also well done!
Im impressed thats some over eneginering worth the effort.
Literally caught myself saying wooowwww outloud to no one.
I’d rather spend the time making a crappy ship than that solar array 😂
Great job though! It’s cool
Clang has already taken his price in broken panels on the floor to allow this
Danger danger will robinson..
klang has been primed, i repete klang has been primed!
Energy Production Level - *YES*
Fake cus no klang
But very cool, if you can make a script so that the solar panels are always pointed at the sun you can really get the efficantie up
I see that shake. Fear the wrath of Klang.
Cool ig but what's the point.. if you had it on a timer block so you could close it with a single button that'd be cool, and if you made it automatically close during a storm that would make it at least somewhat useful
This is a Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Disk! --Just funning, this is awesome!
Clangy but it's creative mode so what does it really matter.
The Almighty Clang would like to know your location
Oh my...Imma try to incorporate that into a solar sail looking think
Nice design but F in the copmments for the fallen panels, them's the real ones
May Clang spare this construction
I like the graveyard of fallen solar panels at the bottom.
Wicked!
Oh that is just waiting for Clang to simply say NO.
You can hear them worshipping Clang.
the panel debris on the ground tells me clang has had fun with this one lol.
Seeing things like this just make me want to quit my day job.
Amazing , just don't let our good lord Klang see that !
Your Klang is not nearly as hungry as mine brother
...it's amazing how this game makes fun of physics...
my tiny brain does not understand what just happened
*pirate drone would like to know your location*
why it needs to open and close? why not always open?
problem with this is that you cannot use it in mp or use solar scripts
любопытно а какое лицо будет у админа когда узнает что сервер в очередной раз здох из-за этой штуки?))))))))
Ahh the sound of Clang
Treasure planet, here we come.
I love the, just cause I can, factor
What in the name of Clang have you done?
Clang wants to know your location.
Blueprint link or name please,
**Clang dislikes this**
Cool idea now try to mirror it to the other side.
Either this or one Wind turbine
this is so beautiful and nice
Wow don't more to say just wow
Love all the fallen panels
Holy crap well made!
very cool setup sir.
Is this on the workshop?
This is art right here
dude thats awespme
Clang Clang
Is it also a gun?
cool dude
So elegant!
Very cool
kraken bait
that was sick
real nice
thou should be grateful for sir clang has allowed this creation to survive. i admire its beauty.
Impressive
Awesome
Epic!
That is awesome! Any further attempt at making it into a flower, or did you keep on hitting roadblocks on getting there?
I haven't tried to be honest, don't think it will work if I make it bigger. Currently, the hinges are already struggling to fold, and only do so once the pistons start retracting. I've tried copying this onto a ship as wings but the first hinge didn't move after making the pillar, before even adding any of the panels. There's a bug with hinges that's limiting me, but it's been flagged for a fix for well over a year now. I may pick this back up in the future.
@@xLadyHawkx you coule make it double hinged and double pistoned for more torque
@@xLadyHawkx Hinges and rotors don't have much torque. If the thing it's trying to move is attached to the hinge too far from the center of mass, it might not be able to move it at all. Pistons on the other hand have massive amounts of torque. It's bulky but u can make piston driven hinges that will lift mountains.
the game has come so far, I remember times when even 3 rotors on top of each other would have caused clang to freak out
Subbed for the Channel Name! Sticking around for more badass engineering!
I made a script that auto aligns solar panel arrays to face the sun so I could have absolutely massive solar stations in space and this creation would be so perfect for it
you angered the almighty clang with that construction...
Masterpeace!! It would be awesome to see it on a Large Space Station
That is just awesome and efficient for gathering energy.
I could see this as a ship addition. Have is folded up laying on the sides of a ship then when needed pivot out from the ship and expand to recharge the batteries and save on uranium.
Have you tried flying a ship through the hole?
Yoooo!
Now put 2 around a ship and make them fold up into a flat stack- lol
Can I use this design in one of my own ships for the workshop?
now make it fly
lol, at least your ship would make a pretty swirl before being fired into the 4th dimension
Nice. Make it dual.
Ill give it to ya it's a great design, I can't help but think a single reactor can probably outdo it though
Ya but if your on a planet only server
is there a blueprint of this on the workshop?
I know its been a year, but if you still need it you can get the Auroras Solar Array which is basically this but on a ship and its bigger
