The first of 31 idled Boeing 747s at British Airways took off from London Heathrow Airport on August 18th for its final resting place at an aircraft boneyard in Castellon, Spain. The flight marked the start of the airline’s ultimate disposal of its fleet, the first member of which entered service in 1971 with BA progenitor British Overseas Airways Corporation.
Although not the first 747 retired as a result of Covid-19, the BA jumbo jet served as part of the world’s largest fleet of the iconic jets, which at one time numbered 57 airplanes. In June Qantas retired the last of its six 747-400s, six months ahead of schedule, as part of a wider recovery plan. KLM flew its last 747 passenger flights at the end of May, also ahead of the scheduled 2021 departure of the airline's 747s. Lufthansa now operates the world’s largest 747 fleet, flying 19 new-generation 747-8Is and eight 747-400s.
For BA, though, the future lies with less fuel-thirsty airplanes such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, as economics trump the Queen of the Skies’ nostalgia value.

My first two 747 flights were with BA as a kid back in 1974. The first was from the US to Heathrow. The second was a few days later from Heathrow to Bahrain. They were great. On the trans-Atlantic flight a flight attendant invited my younger siblings and me to the cockpit while in flight so we got to see the lounge, too. On the second flight we played with a couple of sisters from Scotland on the way to Australia with their parents. Two years later they moved next door to us in Bahrain. There are many other good memories.

+Aviation International News You hope to fly on one again someday? What would bring them back? So many people seem to be on Elon Musk’s bandwagon of electronic this or that? I am not one though.

Will never be the same seeing a BA 747 at Heathrow again. I had the honour of flying on G-CIVD to Miami in September 2015 and had fantastic flight. Also flew back from Miami on G-CIVE last was so glad I did as I practically knew it was going to probably my last opportunity on it and it was. I also got chance to fly on 747s with other airlines and had great memories of my holidays. RIP B747s and thanks for the great memories 😪

So sorry to see this grand old bird leaving the skies. I remember going out to JFK in 1970 to see it for the first time. Then flying on one later that year. Now, there rapidly departing the holding pattern.
