My childhood sweetheart named Maria, who was the 1st love of my life when I was in elementary school, was raped by 2 junior high school boys. I used to always walk her home from school, because I really liked being with her and she made me feel nice. Maybe I was too young to know what real love was, but I knew I wanted her to be the one for me when I grew up. But this one day, instead of walking her home, I played football with the fellas after school, and she walked home alone. She only lived a couple of blocks from our school, so it wasn't far. But that was the day that changed my life forever. She was attacked by 2 boys, who had their way with her. I found out about it the next day, when she didn't show for school. Her mother told me about it. I balled like a baby after finding out. I couldn't bring myself to see her for a while because I felt so messed up for failing her, in my mind. She was the one who was had to tell me everything was gonna be OK in spite of. She tried to return to school but the other kids just teased her something awful, and she couldn't take much of that. One day, I came to see her after school, but I had to wait for her mother to arrive home because there was no answer. When her mom got home, she didn't know why she didn't answer her. Then she went to the basement, and screamed like I never heard before or since. Her mother found her in the basement, hanging from the pipes. I ran and saw the body too, and cried like my heart just died. After the funeral, her mother left the area, and I haven't spoken to her since. Ever since then, I have blamed myself for what happened, and vowed to never let another woman get hurt if I can help it. I still carry the thought of her and what happened in my head and I'll go to my ends with that thought. I'm sorry for this long post, just wanted to say I respect how you handled it here.
