Rich is both an AKC and AHBA Herding Test and Trial Judge. He and his dogs have earned six herding championships culminating in two "Triple Crown" wins in AKC, AHBA and ASCA. His dogs are among only a handful of German Shepherds in the entire nation to achieve this honor. Rich has been involved in herding for nearly two decades-training, trialing and teaching. Rich specializes in working with all dog breeds. As a testament to his teaching and coaching skills, his students and their dogs have successfully won awards at all levels of herding from instinct tests to championships. Rich is a Vietnam era veteran who served four years as a Navy Corpsman. After leaving the Navy, he spent the next 38 years as a med tech for the Veterans Administration Hospital in San Diego.
Unlike work with Collies, German Shepherds never gather sheep into a flock. They never use what is called the "EYE" to control sheep and they are never used to cut sheep out of a flock.
In the Tending style the sheep are trained to come to the shepherd when he calls them. The sheep are trained to follow the shepherd when he leads the flock to a new pasture. The dogs only role is to act as a LIVING FENCE and a Policeman to keep the sheep within the borders that the shepherd establishes.
It is not easy for one or two dogs to control a large flock of sheep. In Germany the flocks I watched averaged between 300 and 800 sheep. The dogs are expected to keep these sheep out of vegetable gardens and fields of fresh plants as the flock passes by or grazes next door. This is a difficult thing to do if the sheep have had nothing to eat all night or if they have been eating dry stubble for the past two hours. The dog's only means of maintaining control is through gripping or biting the sheep.

I grew up with German Shepard Dog's, they're in my top 3 favorites of all time for sure. It's a shame how majority are so badly bred nowadays, you can observe it in their gait.

That's only with the showline German Shepherd Dogs. However, Working lines vs showline dogs are very different. The showline dogs have a great day in the show ring while working line German Shepherds have a great example of how you can breed your German Shepherd Dog to the breed standard that Max Von Stephanitzs who had bred them for. He wanted a trotting dog that could herd and do utility work for a long period of time. A dog that did not tired easily at all. A while back German Shepherd Dogs were in the working group per AKC. Today they remain a part of the herding group per AKC. The reason for this change was that the dogs ability to do utility work for numerous purposes and agencies was not when the standard originally implied. This is a purebred German Shepherd Dog of the past that was bred from original stock and a purchased Shepherd dog. And so the German Shepherd Dog was indeed the outcome of the breeds outcrossing, backcrossing, and maybe some line and inbreeding. Inbreeding is not taken lightly and dogs should never be able to breed to a close relative. For instance, mother to son, sister to brother, father to daughter. I have seen inbreeding and I can ensure you..don't rush to breeding both of these dogs together. Find a new gene pool for the greater good. Showline GSD evolved into nothing more than a dog trotting around a ring. The whole while having a sloped back with poor hind quarters and very weak back legs. This is not beautiful however it does look like a poorly bred dogs were bred to be the parents of who knows what they are going to look like. Working line German Shepherd Dogs are on a strict breeding program and they usually only breed when a dog has titled. Then they can be a good breeding dog. In bitches you should wait for the second or third season to get a stud. And please do your best to find out all there is to the true German Shepherd Dog. If you want a showline dog that's your prerogative. But beware, AKC does not have strict rules for breeding and working line German Shepherd dogs must be titled and health tested by the OFA or another organization. This means that American and Canadian Showline GSD are not perfect, by far. They have little pedigree and sometimes they don't have any registration papers. With the working line German Shepherds you'll see on the pedigree the generations of great titled dogs and what they produce. Also you get to see the sire and dam...I find a must to have trust in the breeder. Showline dogs make great family pets, but they will experience pain and they will slow down at an earlier age. The working lines are extremely important to the German Shepherd Dog gene pool. They have a high energy drive and prey drive. It makes them excellent police, military, border, Schutzhund, IPO and other dog related events in a lot of ways. We have to start with processing knowledge and using it. If you are a reputable breeder and have a great concern for the German Shepherd Dog then please help us maintain the quality of our German Shepherds. If you can't keep up with breeding your dog's in the proper way and condition you are doing no one any favors. Look into this amazing talent of a dog with drive and intelligence beyond anything we can ever imagine. The German Shepherd Dog never ceases to amaze me. He will be loving, loyal and faithful to his end. I hope this helps some of you. Owning any dog is a great privilege. God Bless

I agree that one of the best traits of herding dogs is their tendency to think about what they're doing. They're active learners, always looking for ways to problem-solve. It's rewarding for them to learn new things and put it to use.

I read the title and was confused. I did not know they were hunting dogs. I was about to say that Dogs 101 lied to me, but then the video went on and explained. So the GSD was originally a herding dog, but the hunter to herder thing was more of an explanation on how the herding dog group in general came to be. Loved the video. =D

GSD's can be taught to do anything. And they do it all extremely well! Grandparents were farmers in Europe. They had a West German GSD. Smartest dog ever. Was about 110lbs. Lived for 15 years and herded animals right to the end. It is what he lived for. A happy GSD is a dog that has purpose.

I would argue the GSD is an all around farm dog. They have webbed feet and love the water. Great to retrieve a foul just taken. Shepherding the sheep or cattle as we see here. Security and defense from people and other animals within reason. Plus they love to be with their owners. They are well suited for most climates but heat might be a problem. They genuinely want to please you and need to have a job. They are just wired this way and well done to the man that bred it into them.

@@juanhartley4897 I don't think you can answer that. Some litters may produce more working pups that others. However, if you want to talk about loyalty and bravery, you will not find a better dog. The Pit will stand by it's human no matter what. Also, they have gameness, that never say quit attitude. That can also be used for herding, because it's also a form of predator response, like they were talking about in the video.
