  • How to read a spark plug versus using an AFR wideband o2 sensor gauge. Which one is the real winner and which one should you use for your build. Like all other things, it really does depend on the application and intended use of your engine. I will be going through the past operation of reading a spark plug as well as all the new benefits of using a modern wide band gauge. Spark plug readings can tell you a lot about an engine, but is it enough to compete with a modern o2 sensor gauge? My test engine for this is my carb ls carbed 5.3 LS engine. Currently running a wideband AFR gauge Reading spark plugs as well as spark plug tuning is a lost art and I hope it is not forgotten, but due to the ever increasing advances in technology, manually looking at the condition of the spark plugs is becoming a chore of the past. Any questions feel free to post them down below! Wideband tuning is probably the best way to go!

    Is Reading a Spark Really Useless In 2020? Let me know! Got any carb questions, feel free to post them down below!

      Useless until you run a cylinder lean spraying or boosting and blow it up. Then reading plus become really useful 😂

    A wide band is great for getting things very close. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to examine each cylinder, via the spark plug. You absolutely can fine tune each cylinder via spark plug reading and carb adjustments.

    • @TurboMalibuV6
      @TurboMalibuV6 2 роки тому +1

      False. You cannot fine tune EACH cylinder with a carburetor.

      Actually you can. Thats where intake manifold porting comes in. Check out david vizards tunnel ram video for more info.

      @@NightWrencher I watched David's video. He modded the intake manifold to equalize the cylinder's airflow. That would be fine tuning by using an intake (like you suggested)... not by tuning the cylinders with the carburetor. Big difference. The post above stated that "You absolutely can fine tune each cylinder via spark plug reading and carb adjustments." Carb adjustments to fine tune EACH cylinder is not possible.

      @@TurboMalibuV6 just like an afr gauge… it’s a tool that helps you, of course you’ll have to make adjustments, could be at the carb or at the manifold, to even out the atomization and get an even mixture on each cylinder. I agree with you.

    You keep saying reading plugs is worthless but if you don't have an afr gauge on the car/motorcycle/chainsaw/lawnmower/equipment etc it's valuable information. Also unless you have an afr O2 sensor on every single cylinder then you're not going to notice if one cylinder has a problem. Your afr reading may be good but if you pull all the plugs and one is showing lean/rich you'll know there's an issue.

      Reading plus is useless IF you have an AFR gauge. A problem with a single cylinder wont have much to do with the carb mainly because half the carburetor feeds the whole bank and distribution is pretty good on modern carb intakes so that leaves ignition and compression which would be noticable with or without an AFR gauge or checking plugs. An AFR gauge cuts tuning timing to a fraction of what it would take be just checking plugs. You can tune idle, transition, main, pv and secondaries in a single drive. Reading plugs has its place to tell you the overall health of the engine, but for tuning, cant beat an AFR gauge.

      @@NightWrencher do what? An AFR gauge only gives you an average AFR reading across the cylinders on that bank. You can easily have one cylinder at 10:1 and another at 13.7:1 on the same bank, yet your AFR reading could be 12.3:1, and you’re none the wiser. I’ve seen exactly this on the dyno using O2 sensors in each primary tube. You absolutely can fine tune each cylinder with jet changes and air bleed changes. You don’t have to do a WOT pull to get a plug reading. If you’re fine tuning drivability, then put fresh plugs in, run around the block as you normally would and then shut the engine off and check your plugs.

    Spark plug reading, even for a street car is not useless. Not all widebands are calibrated properly and working correctly. Checking the plugs every once in a while is a good practice for tuning. I agree widebands are great but you can't get all of your info from numbers alone.

      You can learn a lot from reading spark plugs. looking for Signs of detonation, how well the advance is working, compare cylinder to cylinder to make sure fuel distribution is even, but hands down, there is no better tool to tune your transition, main and powervalve circuits than with a wide band. Your WOT you want to tune it at the track or on a dyno. your idle can be tuned with a vacuum gauge, but everything else, should be tuned with a good name brand wideband. A wideband can turn a novice into a pro in a matter of days and no holley will become untunable.

      Yes, too many carb people only focus on WOT and forget about drivability. Since I've had my AFR gauge there hasnt been a single carb I couldnt get dialed in. You can pull several MPG out of your carb so the AFR gauge will pay for itself in the long run.

      I wouldnt worry. The first 3 or 4 threads always get dirty. As long as theres no carbon on the TIP of the plug, youre fine. Carbon means excessive oil.
