Basically everyone has their own paths in life as well as their own paths to success, some succeed now, some later and some more than others, accepting this fact is a step forward.
some never at all
Some never
some never at all.
Some truly never at all, until the end of their life.
If you find yourself distracted by other people's success, it's important to shift your focus to your own journey and goals. Remember that everyone's path is unique, and comparison can be a slippery slope to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. Instead, celebrate the achievements of others and use them as inspiration and motivation for your own growth and development.
Stay committed to your values, passions, and goals, and trust that your efforts will lead to success in your own way and on your own timeline. Remember, the only person you should compare yourself to is the person you were yesterday.
I always doubt myself. When i see someone getting good marks after same study in exam, i felt hurt and thinking like i am not good. I don’t know how to recover me from this situation.
*5 things to quit right now:*
*1. Overthinking*
*2. Trying to make everyone happy*
*3. Living in the past*
*4. Worrying*
*5. Doubting yourself*
6. Trying to be like someone else

It's so difficult to judge whether you are Nokia (ignored trends to their own demise) or Blackberry (distracted by other's success) oftentimes.
Secret is to research and develope, add more features and not copy others, Nokia also launched smartphones when its business started slowing down but by then Android phones already captured the market. How Nokia wouldve been successful is, if it had kept its eye on the Market and not get secured when its products were in most demand. It wouldve caught the market when new phones wouldve been there and launched immediately something of their own just as an experiment product.
Blackberry tried to copy apple and try to capture their market instead of focussing on the Market it already had and launch something "Androidy" of their own.
Also the reason why iPhone has maintained its legacy is beacuse it is serving its own niche, it did not get distracted when the android was capturing the market and believed in the product it had, improved it and now most company copy apple products. Even now AppStore has less apps than PlayStore has, it is not launching some iPhone version which can access the GooglePlaystore. It forces the developers and businesses to create an Apple version for the eqvivalent app it has on Android. So the people who are focussed on themselves and progress in the path of their own, are likely to get copied by others, because such people are few.
I am so old I remember when Blackberries were new and cool. I especially appreciate your points around "how to stay out of shiny new thing, popularity" races beacuse "Your're not going to make a better iphone than an iphone!" Excellent, memorable points.
Thank you Simon. I actually wanted BlackBerry phone... now I know why I couldn’t find it...
That's an interesting discussion, Simon. However, remember your example about Blockbuster and how they failed to adapt to the market when Netflix showed up? So, I'm wondering why should we blame BB if they were trying to catch up and improvise. Or perhaps there isn't a certain rule that applies to all and we should study each case independently, and then decide what works best for each company.
Had a similar thought. I mean look at Nokia..
Their problem was evolving too late. Nokia had the same fate as well. Instead of evolving sooner, it was simply too late and by that time they had already lost a significant amount of market share. The nail was already in the coffin.
That’s why nobody should take business advice from a guy who has never created any businesses. His analysis of BlackBerry’s failures is super shallow and a complete nonsense.
The problem you discuss is very detailed in the work; "The Innovators Dilemma". Because it is, well, a dilemma. In Business, and what Mr. Sinek was referring to with his animal analogy, there is the the purpose of the product or service. The niche that it fills or what need if it satisfies. What Simon is arguing is that the need Blackberry filled was being a secure and reliable product so that businesses and government agencies won't have and tech problems whilst using their product. After the iPhone came out Sinek's point is that they tried to start filling the niche of "new and innovative" instead of "strong and safe".
More Explanation:
Furthermore when making something new it is, in the early days, rarely reliable or efficient (The Innovator's Dilemma details this). Customers that had used the blackberry before for its reliability wouldn't be coming back to buy their new product.
Blockbuster on the other hand was in the same market as Netflix, providing home entertainment. When they refused to innovate in their field they faltered and disappeared. My understanding of what Sinek believes Blackberry should have done is to have continued to first and most importantly provide a safe and reliable product, Second of all serve the need of the customers, given Sinek's diagnosis of business people and government one can conclude that a touch-screen isn't the most important thing as of the juncture of the start of smartphone age.
@@Paul-wj3sv For the record I believe Mr. Sinek does own a business: "Sinek Partners" I believe is its name
The title made me think if I do that on personal level, but the actual content was more on a corporate level and as many in the comments section has already pointed out: Nokia stayed the course and see how well that turned out. Survival not of the strongest, but of the most adaptive is usually the case.
When you speak from your heart & soul it naturally becomes great presentation. No need to follow any tips & techniques.
If they keep their original vision and break, people would say it is because they didn't know how to reinvent themselves

Exactly. Similar advice has been given by J.B.Peterson, do not compare yourself to others, compare yourself to who you have been yesterday.
'Are we stuck in our old ways or are we sticking to our long term vision.' The same problem bugs me in my personal life.
Look at nokia who "sticked" to their core and we know what happened to them. We need to change with time.
choose your own way, do not follow, lead yourself.
Those blackberry days 💪🤧
So true. I loved my blackberry… Except the fact that scroll ball got real dirty real fast
Fantastic Simon, as always. cheers.
I love this!!! Great example, analogy and point! 💯👌🏿
Make a plan, work the plan.
You are so right about BB!! Also the CEOs decided that an NHL franchise was the new shiny object! BB also did not reach out to other business partners like Quick Books, Maximizer CRM and the credit card zip payment app??! As a Canadian it is just another embarrassing abysmal technology failure!!!!
Real Life Practical Tip noted today! THANKS SIMON
You can be blamed for whatever you do or didn't do. Success or failure is subjective.
Simon, I remember watching your other videos wherein u were critical about some coys such as Dell, Nokia and the like for not evolving with the evolving market's. While I got ur message here u should have touched upon it here how it is different
This is legit. Thanks Simon
This was helpful!! Thank you.
Sir as you have raised the point of companies being destroyed by the shiny object syndrome. In actual life my experience with my business has being mixed with plenty of ups and downs. Now as per our discussion how can we combine with the current level of progress printing and designing industry is replacing humans with the advent of technology influx of capital and ai based technology.
Thank u for this video..
Sooner or later blackberry would have gone bankrupt if it had stuck to their models. Like Nokia
True, or they could have double down on what made their product good in the first place, which is security and durability. Both of which is high up on the list for businessmen on the move. Yes an iPhone is a status symbol but you don't buy an iPhone for security, you buy it for looks, for its multitude of apps. Hell, it's only recently that you see iPhone putting secured apps, blackberry had that for years.
Nokia didn't double down, they stagnated. They thought they had the perfect product, when they should have made more reliable, durable phones. They could have also worked together with blackberry or any of the other big phone companies to maybe corner the corporate market, over the need to sell to the masses.
It's literally the same concept with gaming. You ain't gonna bring Blizzard down doing that they do best. Or copying their strategies. You can emulate their business model but you have to fine tune it to suit your game.
True, but they could have developed in their own path and direction, to make the security (that they stood for) even better, and advance in that direction, instead of changing their direction entirely and getting behind iphone on their path. Simon is not sayign they should have just produced the same phones, but develop their phones in the sense of what they stood for.
Thank you Simon! I just love to hear you, it makes so much sense
Authenticity
I love you sir.❤❤
Please English subtitles!!!! Thank you so much
Increidble reflexion
In case of Blockbuster you mentioned that the reaction missing was the problem, but now you mention that the reaction was the problem. So what do?
Blackberry back in 2008 was a favorite
Well, what about Nokia who stuck to its core? maybe there should be a balance in knowing what's happening and taking the new path in your own journey than rushing towards the unknown unprepared.
Nokia didn’t have as strong core as Blacberry had. Nokia had all kind of phones. One could say they had too many phones and they tried to please everybody.
Blackberry on the other hand had clear vision and product: For businesses, string security and full keyboard.
But yeah i can also understand your comment👍
Totally agree
I was also thinking similarly. Probably there isn't a general rule that applies to all, and we should study each case separately and decide what would work best for each company.
Simon has a video saying that Blockbuster failed because they refused to change their methods once Netflix showed up. So, Blockbuster failed because they didn't adapt to the new market.
@@brainactivity737 exactly!! Some organizations were too rigid.. some were too flexible both vanished
@@bhargavgudladona4376 Life is more complicated than simply setting general rules that works for everyone. That's why we should be careful and study what works best for each person/company/case/situation.
Of course, it's easier for us to see things as black and white because it saves us from digging into all the complexities that are found in between.
I'm breaking myself of the habit too, but when you think what 'off the reservation' means, it's not something you want to say.
Great sharing Simon
Yes it was
The tactile feel of the blackberry keyboard is surely missed! No look typing, that was blackberry value!
Fantastic!!!!!!!
Well said, thank you
Simon, I love your work and presence, but here you contradict yourself.
1:58 "are we stuck in our old ways?" - adapting to smartphones is not sticking to the old ways, it's more like go with the demand and adapt. You can still get a Blackberry if you want. But almost nobody wants that.
Here's some examples:
1) Kodak got stuck in her long term vision and got destroyed because they didnt went digital in time.
2) Playstation and XBOX copied Nintendo's nunchucks and they had a decent run.
3) Nokia got stuck in her old phones and it got shut down.
BB and Nokia did not pay attention to the smartphone trend. They literally thought it was just a fad and their phones would stand the test of time. This was their mistake and when they finally decided to adopt the Android OS, it was too late. They had already lost significant market share and they were done. Do your research.
Great words
While Nokia tried not to distract with Android, but ended almost the same
Hu Simon
Thank you for sharing this video.
What are the ways can we differentiate both?
But in a way didn't Nokia stick to their beliefs and decided not to get distracted. Look at what happened to them 😢
Nokia got old and died happy, Imam Ali a "Kobudo King" said: "Raise your children according to their time.." i Norway they talk about E-Sport (for Ti and Te development, geekpsychology on YT made a video recently)
There is a difference between being complacent and sticking to a vision. I think that what Nokia has done is more like being complacent than actually sticking to their beliefs. I reckon that what Simon is saying here is: be yourself as a person/company and try to advance your cause instead of copying whoever seems successful.
You are so dang smart 🧠
No i ám not.. do'n my thing.....
Talk is about the symptoms not the solution over it
Very well said!
Yes
Yeah, I soooo miss a physical keypad on a smartphone! I still hate the integrated touchscreen keyboard!
People don’t like carrying two devices. First premise is flawed.
WOAH MY MIND IS BLOWN WOW😂
I might be wrong but NOKIA decided to stick with their own ways, to remain as a telecommunication company, but failed miserably too. What could they have done to save themselves? (A real question)
I love blackberry
But Blockbuster video stuck to their old ways which was their strength and Netflix showed up and took their market away because they weren't willing to adapt. What about that?! They didn't react yet they didn't survive. @Simon Sinek , honest doubt 😅
From my point of view I think you're right, Blockbuster failed to adapt and innovate which caused its decline but the point that Simon was trying to make was the fact that since you have a specific vision for your company you don't need to wast your time thinking about the success of your competitors, rather, focus on being the best on what you do and aim at being the n°1 on one particular thing
U can see the same thing going on with the OnePlus right now
Yep, I've owned 2 1P phones and they are really dropping the ball. Such a shame because I love Oxygen OS and their phones.
@@beaumiles7246 what number is that can't look it up
if they haven't done that now we'd be probably watching this video in blackberry 14 pro max 😭
On the flip side, that’s how Blockbuster went out of business...they didn’t adapt.
Are we stick in our old ways or we sticking to our long term vision.
But BlackBerry had to adopt the app ecosystem otherwise its fate would have been similar to Nokia . I think they should have focused on security and brand image but adopted to the changing market by launching new product lineups for casual consumers . Their biggest mistake was not making blackberry messenger multi-platform and not adopting app ecosystem. Sometimes companies have to incur immediate losses for long term survival. Yeah but long term vision is important.
“Off the reservation”? Just pointing out the potential bias in the phrase that is unnecessary.
I somehow think this is only half a truth... Sometimes the market changes so drastically that you cannot stay the same and remain relevant, especially in the world of computing. Take those old Nokia phones, for example. They were also amazing, but the world changed, and they became irrelevant. Yes, blackberry probably messed things up badly (and I really loved my old blackberry), but was it not to some degree inevitable?
👏👏👏
Blackberry example was wrong in this context though
S/S. 'Research in Motion' from Canada wasn't distracted, the "Blackberry" was simply interrupted in today's society ! Could you imagine naming your initial cellular phone product this century after the behaviour of Black Lives Matter ? V.
They tried to adapt but failed...
Shiny sh*t can look really good, yet can derail businesses and sometimes even senior managers, who are otherwise, relatively rational and competent.
YAp, so how to know the difference ?
No
Pretty much what happened to the DC cinematic universe in Hollywood :D
Your example is wrong sir. iPhone was not only more flashy, it was just as secure as Blackberry with a better overall experience, particularly with internet services. Almost every primary feature of today's smartphone has its foundation in the first iPhone. It was a better product by magnitudes. The move from physical to virtual QWERTY keyboard was also a major leap.
The very reason Blackberry lost out is because they refused to evolve. Satya Nadella said it best "Our industry does not respect tradition, it respects innovation" and it is clearly shown in Microsoft's come back under his leadership.
Microsoft's past is actually a great example for the topic. Market stincts such as the Zoon vs iPod or Lumia vs iPhone/Android shows this. Software was always been Microsoft's strength. But they got distracted by the success of the other companies offering hardware products, so they tried to play like them.
Imagine if BlackBerry partnered with Cisco and developed holographic mobile devices instead?
With all due respect, I do not agree with you. Blackberry was obsolete when compared with iPhone in the same way Blockbuster was obsolete when compared with Netflix. They did not get distracted with its competitors success. They simply took longer to react in order to maintain their selves in the business.
I might disagree with you at your example. Future market is heading to one direction if you couldn’t catch up you will end up on the past. If there is a company which is still making a cell phone with a keyboard (non smartphone ) the are on an other planet.
Kodak went under cause they DID NOT follow the wave of innovations. So it is not that clear to me this point is valid
Android became killer of blackberry

Simon I love you and your analysis but this time I think you are completely wrong. Blackberry failed because iphone brought so many new features that it literally became a big disadvantage using anything else but iphone. iPhone disrupted the market.
Hi Simon, How about Nokia then? Stuck to their business like you said and died.
I am not getting my pair
That's not right - they adopted to changes looking at an Nokia Example - who wore off due to not adopting new changes.. Please correct me if I am wrong
Although they were always coming up with new models to suit everyones needs and wants but were a strong and reliable phones - doing their jobs to the utmost clarity and efficiency - but Apple took away their market providing the Connection in a wider atmosphere - hence they died off - blackberry on the other hand did both but were not glamorous like Apple, tried to look glamorous without losing their core but yet got killed - Apple took over but Veryyyy dubiously - they make sure people stick to them hence come out with enhanced changes every 2nd year and making people buy their products by removing apps or making them purchase it!! A clever business decision but only targetting the elite mob..
How about Nokia...they were sticking with their own symbian...and now they are nothing...because they dont adapt when Android and iOS start taking off..?
That’s why nobody should take business advice from a guy who has never created any businesses. His analysis of BlackBerry’s failures is super shallow and a complete nonsense.
This time, your analysis doesn’t make sense. Iphone was a mass disruption product. No one could stand in its way if they stood to where they were good at. iPhone would have eventually caught up with security just like they do now. Atleast Blackberry made an effort. Though futile. They probably asked: “Can you protect your business from this disruption” and I am sure the answer came as “No”
You mean Nokia took the right path??.
Nokia and Kodak lacked existential flexibility and that was their downfall. Had they held long enough to their vision and practiced existential flexibility they probably would not have lost the business in that way.

Simon is an amazing person but he really doesn't know how the market works. Blackberry was obsolete the moment the iPhone came out. They tried to adapt but they couldn't. There was no way for them to escape it because with the touchscreen that apple released phones with physical keyboards became so obsolete because they were inferior in every way. I get what he is trying to say with the video but that example was really bad because blackberries identity was tied to the keyboard and that design and there was no way out for them.
