Hawass is a megalomaniac who thinks that he owns the pyramids. One of the reasons for distributing artifacts is not just to gain wider notoriety - it is to protect them from destruction by a singular event. For example, the Buddhas of Bamiyan were destroyed by the Taliban. As long as the Middle East is populated by retrograde cretins with no respect for the common historical heritage of mankind, there will always be that risk. His plaints also fall on deaf ears simply because it is an attempt to increase tourist revenue - not the result of some ethical complaint. Hawass has stood in the way of outside expeditions exploring the chambers beneath the left foot of the Sphinx; analyzing the rock from which the Sphinx was excavated; further explorations of the Great Pyramids - why? Because HE wants to be the focus of attention; HE wants to open them to great fanfare and personal notoriety. He is a megalomaniac who refuses to allow scientists to even discuss the prospect of an earlier genesis for the Sphinx - because HE has gone on record opposing the theory, but also because he thinks HE is an Egyptian. He has no more relation to the ancient Egyptians than i do. The fact that these artifacts and monuments are in his country does not mean they are his - nor even his country's; they are part of the developmental history of all of mankind. A grave robber, plunderer of ancient artifacts, smuggler and alleged black marketeer is speaking about repatriation of ancient artefacts. Such rich irony
Hawass should be noted about the criminal inspector Uno Röndahl's investigation of Sweden's spoils of war in the 1600s where the Swedes stole enormous amounts of cultural treasures (their war efforts through Europe were financed by the then super power France, who bought them as a stab in the back on the Habsburgs), from the earliest Jutnish Law, to the Silver Bible from Prague, to Frederick IIs table canopy etc, etc.
For his frequent appearance in documentary programs on Egyptian civilization, he became internationally known outside of archaeological circles, although some critics criticized him for lack of solid archaeological knowledge
Rosetta Stone going to (and staying within) France makes a lot more sense. I think there are some artifacts that could be justifiably repatriated, but that shouldn't be the default. The stone was carved in several languages because of the Grecian Ptolemaic Dynasty - and was relevant because Napoleon's expedition helped translate the Heiroglyphs because there were translations from Heiroglyphs to Ancient Greek on the stone. Egypt today is not Ancient Egypt, and the Egyptians of today are not the Ancient Egyptians who built any of these structures. Modern Egypt has a custodial role of incredible importance (of which Hawass has been a beneficiary) and should be financed and supported in accordance with said role, but it should no sooner have carte blanche on any artifact more than any other state, since we should hold the Ancient Egyptians highest and front and center, and in holding them highest, front and center, it quietens the voice of Modern Egypt. If Modern Egypt had every artifact and carte blanche it could very easily attempt to purge this Ancient History and these relics - and there are those who wish to destroy this history from within Egypt.

It is sad that, after seeing all three defendants of the need to repatriate artifacts, none of them, surprisingly, seemed to have strong points against the opposition. Wim Pijbes seemed completely unprepared and unconcerned with the issue or debate at hand, quickly using his time to make publicity out of his own projects, and Dr. Zahi simply attacks the act of stealing artifacts without actually showing arguments for their repatriation, aside from the seemingly inherent fact that they need to be due to their criminal acquisition by most museums. They should truly redo this debate because, indeed, these artifacts should be repatriated, or at least moved and presented in nation-neutral spaces.
I would have appreciated backing the proposition the with some objective truths rather than a barrage of normative statements interspersed with anecdotal points.

This man has been accused of stealing artefacts himself and the people who went to jail said it was only possible because of him and he was in on it and just a couple of years ago they found sarcophagus buried deep with the remains of 3 mummies and liquefied bodies, you know what the world's leading expert in Egyptian mummies (this guy) done with these remains... Pour them into the street because he thought they were sewage, i mean this sarcophagus had no markings which is the sign of someone who was a criminal or spread disease yet they opened it, there could have been a thousand year old plague in that sarcophagus this guy is so corrupt he walks out of the debates because he has no answers
Doesn’t matter how much he hold knowledge but he said the truth about Europe !
Dude will forever go down as a clown 🤡 no matter what he did in the past it's too late
I, I and I.
I would rather watch history channel rather then zahi hawass.
Hawass is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!
Yoo zahi, what bout the items you sold on ebay?
Lmao for real 😂 he is so corrupt and has a massive ego.
What items? Sources? don't claim shit if you can't back it up.
@@SyntheticYassien back it up with what? What sources? If anyone cites sources the other will dismiss it as being biased or pseudoscientific. You know very well that nothing can satisfy your already made opinion about something. You citing fox news or some close minded scientist doesn't make a statement correct. You can't prove something political. Hawass is known for lying about egypt for decades. If you're open minded enough, you'll see.
I dont think he's making an argument for repatriation of all objects - only for those that were illegally removed and, within that, those objects which 'make sense' in their homeland. Though thats a controversial point. He also went on to talk about the bad practices of other museums, and I have to say the museums in Egypt are downright awful. As for the rosetta stone forming a crucial part of egyptian identity - hmmmm.
Shame on you Zahi!
Don't encourage this story teller of mistruths. Imperial empires do strip the cultural identities, that cannot be denied, that I have to agree with.
"I built".... (low key) "we built"... this man has an ego that rivals the pharaohs that he makes his living and steals from everyday.. you can't tell me that this man isn't a pos.. he was caught stealing artifacts but some how he didn't go to prison.. this dude is a thief and a con.. I loved watching his history series until I saw how crappy he treats everyone and then he got caught in that artifact stealing scandal and that just threw me off right there.. then he makes up fake history, lineage to silence geographers and real historians.. I think that this guy knows what ancient Egypt really was and he covers up the truth to keep the Egyptian people from revolting because I don't think that the history we have all been taught is the truth.. those monuments are older than what they say they are.. and if that truth became mainstream, it would cripple history as we know it.. he knows that the Egyptians didn't build the oldest monuments in egypt...

The GEM isnt even open yet and the nmec isnt exactly one of the greatest museums in the world

Regardless what people think of hawass all Egyptian artefacts should be returned to Egypt, Egypt govt should bar passport holders from these countries from entering Egypt until artefacts are returned, let there own people put the pressure on for returning artefacts. It's pure theft

While it would be nice to lend such artifacts back to Egyptian Museums upon good faith, it is also...quite risky. I do share concerns about black market purchases and feel that damage to stolen relics be...severe. Egypt is a world heritage site so I can agree on those points.
Countries have no right to hold illegally obtained artefacts from another country's history basta
@@95kostis Not illegal. The Islamic government at the time of those excavations had no interest in those artifacts, as it wasn't related to their religions. They left them all to rot while the entire world preserved what would have been lost. You're welcome.
Perhaps we should give Constantinople and Hagia Sophia (one of the greatest Christian centers in history) back to the Greco-Romans?
Idiot
If it was not for the British Museum I would not have seen for myself the way the ancient Egyptian depicted themselves as Black people. Before I visited the museum and saw for myself I was a skeptic who believed that so called "Afrocentrics" were trying to counter "White washed" history with "Black washed" history. In a country dominated by Islam the ancient artifacts could meet the same fate as the ancient Buddhist monuments in Afghanistan or the Christian artifacts in Iraq. Already there are Islamic clerics calling for destruction of the pyramids in Egypt!!
Egypt was under the Islamic rule for more than a thousand years...no Muslim ruler order it to be destroyed or any of that nonsense - meanwhile, westerners kept plundering our history and twisting facts.
