I think Nezumi went mental & fell into despair after Shion died. He looked so lifeless whilst singing & unaware of his surroundings as if nothing else mattered anymore.
I can't hate Safu. She sacrifices herself for Shion, and let him at Nezumi, for theses two living together and let the town get a new start. She would probably can try to fight and return to her normal life and her propers goals with Shion, but she didn't. She accepts what happens and save the world. With smile.
Just think about it. If Shion had actually died, their goodbye kiss near the beginning of the series was the closest he got to telling him he loves him, wasn't it? I'd be pretty fucking broken if somebody who'd somehow slinked into my life and made me have feelings had just been shot in the chest right in front of me.

I legit bawled my eyes out during this scene for a good 5 whole minutes. You can just hear the cracking in Nezumi's voice because it's all over for him, the one he cared the most deeply about is dead.

my guy, im pretty sure u didnt watch this anime bc it is mentioned in episode 7-8 about this song from death and that it is sang by elyriuas, he did say that but when u love someone and they die u prety much lose hope. he did and that expression was emotionless.
TBH, the beginning of this scene is why I love it so much. Throughout No.6, it seems as if it's very one-sided. Shion cares deeply about Rat, but Rat tries keeping his distance only making sure the boy survives by eating and having a place to sleep. Even in the events before this scene, it still feels one-sided, with Rat only wanting to make sure Shion lives to go back to his mother. But then, this happens. Shion got shot, and died. Rat covers him the bast he can. And breaks. His broken voice going into the singing. That's how you know he actually truly cared about Shion. He doesn't care if he dies, now that Shion's dead. He sings only a small part of the song, because he can't bring himself to sing anymore. He doesn't hold the notes like he once did. He wants to die, because the one person he actually cared about is gone. And THAT is why I love the beginning of this scene so much.
I found rat portrayed his feelings for shion way more than he would have liked. Shion never doubted that rat liked him, only if rat would oppose him. Remeber when the dog keeper found out rat liked shion and immediately made a HUGE deal out of it?
Remeber when rat straight up told that girl "this boy is mine?" but it wasn't until shion started going cold that rat showed how much he cared and in this scene showed he was willing to die for shion
Him acting very different and to tje kerp distanced shows how much he cares. And sometimes he tries maybe to impress him?! He probably lets his actions talk over his words.
If this does t break your heart, remember that Dog Keeper and rigaku tried to make him go with them but he refused, planning to die by Shions side. Don't think about how it was probably his singing elyuris song that led her to them, so safu could save them. Even if it wasn't, shion would have awoken alone and nezumi would have probably been crippled by his wounds, if he even survived. It was only bc nezumi loved shion enough to die with him that they got their happy ending (ish)

This anime makes me cry everytime. It is literally my favourite, I could watch it 100 times and never get sick of it. It has an amazing plot, and the characters are so perfect. The book is also REALLY good if you haven't read it.
