When you build a radiator/fan shroud and you lay sheet metal against the rad you basically eliminate that area of the radiator from flowing air. Usually building race and pulling radiators we will leave a bubble of about an inch above the core so air can move through all of the rad vs only the fan area.

Funny incident that Paul using the arrow sign reminded me of. We were building a brush truck for the VFD. For the switch panel I grabbed an arrow sign that was laying in corner of the FD/county barn, cut it, bent it, drilled it and made a nice aluminum panel out of it. A week later the county commissioner was looking all over the building for the arrow sign he had ordered. He never did find it. Hope he doesn't read the comments to Fab Rats! Lol

A trick we used to use when we did 24-hour road races was to "cross the beams" of our lights. That is: the right light is aimed to illuminate the left side of the track and vice-versa. That way you get light on the track in front of you plus light on the track curves. Anyhow, fun video but I'm done with my morning cup of coffee and it's time for me to head to the garage to complete this week's goal on my '59 Jag project (swapping in a modern dual brake M/C). Cheers.

I've ALWAYS ran the cheap aluminum rads in my vehicles. I go with the 3 core aluminum $100-$150 rads. Never had an issue. I even run one in my new Silverado. It runs 20° cooler than what the factory one runs. Also the OEM harmonic puller is the best puller you can buy, I've got the same one and use it for so many different things. Keep you a couple push rods from junk motors of various lengths to use instead of the ones that came with the tool, they won't bend as easy as what comes with the tool.

Just FYI if you are going to use a wire brush or wheel on aluminum, it should be brass. Anytime steel comes in contact with aluminum it can leave carbon deposits which can make the weld dirty....

    • @juanlara9409

Or use a stainless brush and dedicate it only for aluminum, don’t use that brush on anything other than aluminum

Definitely DO NOT use a brass brush, ever. Dedicated stainless brush is the way to go. Mark it 'Aluminum TIG only', because even one use on another metal will contaminate the weld.

Guess you decided not to cut the holes in the shroud and put flappers on… not a problem, it only helps at higher speeds anyhow, which, once you’re up to speed, it doesn’t take much horsepower to stay up to speed, so the engine is making less heat anyway… nonetheless, I reckon, once Summers here, if it don’t stay cool at higher speeds, with the a/c on, flapper holes in the fan shroud would certainly help, especially since the shroud is so tight to the radiator.

The reason your wing windows wouldn't open is because you have to cut your rubber at the pivot on the bottom, and one half of your rubber trim faces inward, while the other faces outward; It's pretty straightforward once you see it.

You guys are great. Entertainment media has needed some nice wholesome reality like your channel for so long, and the nice thing is that the one thing that seems to have been driving your ever increasing popularity, is you just being genuine and doing what you do best and filming it. I watch your channel, Matt's Off Road Recovery, Robby Layton, Merlin's old school garage, and Rudy's adventure and design religiously! Watching all you guys's videos has been the single most inspiring thing to learn new ways of creating that I've experienced in my entire life. at 53 years old I've finally learned to weld. I was inspired to learn from watching you guys, and every time I watch you guys building vehicles I learn more on how to build my own off-road rig, AND how to effectively off-road it! I spent 20 years in the U.S. Army with 6 deployments. Having experienced that I feel like I have a fairly decent understanding of quality of character in a person (at least from my perspective, whatever that's worth). You guys all set an amazing example to your fans on how to never give up, to think your way through obstacles, and accomplish what you set out to do, even when things get difficult. Thank you for the entertainment, but also the inspiration you give me with every one of your videos! Please never stop making them!

In the past when I had an issue with a system overheating I would check the thermostat and make sure I was using the highest temperature I could get. This will allow the thermostat to close longer and the air to move though the radiator and cool the coolant and then when the thermostat opens it is more likely to keep cycling and keep the engine from overheating. In Palm Springs California I used 205 degree thermostat any time I could get it for a vehicle to help keep them from over heating in the hot summers. A thermostat that has been removed or is stuck open will make a engine over heat on hot days. BTW I love all your content and have seen them all.

The Yota's cabin is getting better insulated and more comfotable. The wing mirrors and door seals should dampen the rattles and reduce humidity build-up. Nothing like more night lights to shine a path. Just need to label some of them switches. All you need now is a good winter storm or some heavy rain or later in the year, some extreme heat. Maybe towing under load.

Paul be careful with aluminum radiators as far as system pressure. The core tubes will balloon with high pressures and in turn block airflow. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding

Glad you were able to troubleshoot the radiator. Never would have guessed it had an open area/too fine a mesh issue. Getting that 1" plenum gap between the coil and the fan should allow the air to pass the whole area on the highway too. If you want two stage fan control, you could try reinstalling the original twin fans that you had, and also get some clearance to the belts & pulley.

You have made such a wonderful job of your FJ, please consider painting it, and another thought although you are probably sick of our comments and Ideas, what about plumbing a second Radiator in series, from the bottom of the radator under the cab and place it under the deck at the rear above the frame, would increase your water capacity and cooling area. A small copper line (1/4") from the higest point of the secondary, back to the top of your main radiator with maybe a tiny pump, would take care of any air locking.

I would suggest to install a light to tell you when the cooling fan is on and a bypass switch to manually turn the fan on. On my car the sniper handheld was telling me my fan was on but the fan was not on. The Holley reads the sensor and not the fan so the handheld may give you a "fan on" but that could be a false indicator. I have my indicator lights wired into the 2 fans so when lit I know the fan is on.

I have a 1976 FJ40 with a Chevy 383 had the same over heating problem went with a very expensive radiator like you did. Went to a cheaper radiator like you did but still didn’t work had to put the mechanical clutch fan back on. Problem was solved. Enjoy your videos, retired US Army, Sergeant, Major Gamsby.

I had the same experience with an old Pontiac years ago. Took out the super expensive aluminum radiator that I bought and replaced it with a $100 aluminum one. Never had an over heating problem after that for the next 10 years that I owned it 😊

Paul, if you're still having issues with cooling when the weather gets warm again, a couple of suggestions.
Many people are commenting on you not having you cooler or condenser in front of the radiator. Where exactly do they expect them to be? You obviously have no more room to remoter mount them elsewhere. This is not the problem.
I have been a diesel tech since 1996, since I was 21. I don't mess with cars and trucks. I have worked on the craziest things over the years, and had to enginer and troubleshoot cooling issues on vehicles like fire trucks and large cranes that have mid engine designs(basically an enclosed hotbox thats insulated to trap all the heat from the inside where passengers(firemen) would sit inches from detroit diesels.
From just looking at the way your front is set up, you have less air flow in the bottom, due to the bumper and winch. The rule of thermodynamics is you want your delta T to run hot with hot and cold with cold. The top part of your radiator is going to get more airflow. So even though it seems counter intuitive, You might need to swap your rad hoses. You want your upper hose(the hottest coolant) running to the bottom, and the coolest(the return) coming out of the top of the rad. ALso, we had this one firetruck years ago that we we scratching our heads over for months. Tried everything. Eventually we found adding a restrictor in the return hose fixed the issue, like a secondary thermostat. We found the coolant was bypassing the radiator too quickly and it wasn't cooling off enough before it returned to the pump. Basically we stuck a thick washer in the hose. It never has issues again. This was like 20 some years ago. The radiator was setup like yours where part of it was not getting full air. It was a bad design by EONE

Hmm , 🤔 we use wet water on firefighting to aid in oxygen
suffocation on classB fires , and sometimes on brush fires if the root systems keep reigniting. What's the
theory / effect re: a coolant system ?

I remember back in the day one of my buddy had the same problem, with a S10 Blazer with 350 swap. He bought this expensive radiator to cool it and it would not run cool no matter what he tried. Finally he accidentally messed up the radiator one day, putting a small hole in it trying to mess with the fans to try to figure out what the issue was. He was pissed at himself for messing up such an expensive radiator. He couldn't afford another one so ended up getting one from a scrapyard picking one up for like $30 and worked great, not a single cooling issue ever again.
