For everyone commenting about gloves, we usually wear them! We don't film all of our dives, and it's harder to film with gloves on. We don't use them when the dumpster seems cleaner than usual, and we avoid the dirty stuff when we don't have them on. There is nothing unsafe we are touching, so there is no need to comment that we need gloves when it's not necessary at all times. Thank you for all of the concern though! We will wear them more on camera from now on! 😊 Also, everything we use and keep is properly sanitized and disinfected like MUA's do before reusing product on new clients! We also do not use anything expired. If you think this is gross or disgusting, this isn't the place for you! Hate is unnesscesary and it's only making you look silly! 😊

My stepdad used to pick up stuff that ppl would throw away in the wealthier area of our city,it was me and 4 of my siblings and we had no money after we came to the U.S but i remember how these wealthy ppl would throw almost brand new stuff! I never understood why didn't they just donated them,from Childrens cIothing,furniture and everything needed for a home ect..me and my siblings had great toys thanks to my stepdad,i helped him out a couple times and i still have a portrait i kept from those times.i am 37yrs old now and i am thankful that my kids have everything they need,those days really made me who i am today and its why every month i donate whatever we don't need or use to those in need...those childhood memories fill my heart with joy today and i will never forget my stepdad.☺💕
Donation places throw away stuff too! 80% of donated clothing and toys is thrown out again, so it's all the same. Buy less, reuse and recycle. No shame in dumpstering and they are actually keeping things out of landfill.
I try to give whatever my kids out grow that are gently used to people that I know. Pass it on don't throw it away!!

Purchase what you can afford or have nothing at all, maybe a sub box for your bday or Christmas if so extremely hard up you have to go to a dumpster. They keep the dumpsters locked at my Ulta and I asked my friend why (she works there) she said one time a girl was dumpster diving and got some mascara and suffered from pink eye in both eyes and tried to sue their Ulta.
She told me no matter how many times an item (ESPECIALLY mascara and eyeliner) you or someone working there "disinfects" there's still a chance of getting an infection, irritation, or blemishes on the skin. Anything that's been used is still dangerous and very unhygienic. Just be careful!!!
Kimbermeme mascara or anything that has a wand that dips into the product is a NO GO. But powders, creams, pencils, lipstick bullets, all of these are regularly sanitised by makeup artists between clients all the time. It is safe if done properly with a high alcohol concentration

Why can’t the store donate these item to a woman’s shelter instead of throwing it all out?
The sad true is, they don't want poor/homeless people using their products. Especially with clothing that has logos and stuff. But with make up, they don't want a homeless girl pulling out a Renaissance pallette and then you associate their name with what they deem 'trash'. It's sad because women's shelters could use some of the stuff. For job interviews, and to help boost their self esteem.
If someone gets an infection from used product the company can be sued. When I worked at ulta some of the corporate managers talked about how sad it it but sadly donating used product puts the company at risk for a lawsuit.

Just wanted to let you guys know that if you wanna keep dumpster diving don't show the return tags cause they have the store number on them, I used to work at ulta and stores do communicate with one another about possible dumpster diving incidents, because it's a huge liability to them, cause the fact that your walking away with stuff means someone's not doing their job and someone could possibly lose their job, so just letting ya know

I work at ulta and as sad as it seams when they do recalls and what not if it calls to "damage" the product we must actually physically damage it so people can't do this for "sanitary reasons" but low key I've opened brand new products and had to scrape out the pan or cut tubes open and get out every bit of product so it can not be taken. I've wanted to cry with the amount of things we could just give to people or LET THE EMPLOYEES TAKE HOME!!! But no they make us destroy is and send tears flooding into the hearts of the makeup world. I wish ulta would change this policy
I totally agree. If anyone deserves the makeup it’s the employees. It’s pretty fucked up that they do it & I know because I used to work there. But people shouldn’t go swimming in a dumpster because at that point it is infected

I'm not sure what the FDA policies are on redistributing returned/discontinued/expired cosmetics, but in my opinion the store employees should have the choice to take it home or not.

I would recommend u using like a mini tripod those flexible ones and when u go dumpster diving you can grip it to the dumpster (if that makes any sense) and we can like really see everything and so u can have 2 hands to work with 🙂

I went dumpster diving about 3 months ago and found a whole box of samples never been used still in the packages. It was pretty cool I was happy to be able to try them out before purchasing the one I liked the best. They were not dirty at all very clean box.

I broke down and went to my local ulta dumpster last night, since I'm forty and haven't done any diving for about ten years I was giddy and excited...I left to get gloves and when I returned there were three cars each containing three girls parked all around and they tried to beat me up for being there.
Uhhhhhh, it was like a mafia turf war and I'm just one person who had my curiosity reignited by y'all and is this a thing??? These girls, all of whom appeared to be quite young were aggressive and nasty, they called me grandma which I do have to laugh at but let me just say...if you do this remember it's open and free and not cool to threaten another person!! Also, they had at least ten large garbage bags full of loot and it's not like there wasn't enough to go around. Bizarre, but I'll make sure to get there first next time ;)

It's because those pallets run anywhere from 40-50 dollars. Sometimes more. They want to score those because they are coveted for their makeup collection. I get it.... but at the same time not sure it's worth it. The Anastasia products the collected were probably valued at around $100 for just the four items they had....

I am a GM here in Louisiana for Ulta . I know you are full of excitement and love scouring for products you love however, this comes with consequence. Let me give you ladies some knowledge and you can weigh your options .
I’ll gladly elaborate on all aspects for you. Keep in mind we do have police, security detail and live video feed (cameras) 24/7 to protect our company workers & inventory.
The costs of our products are a bit pricey due to thefts, damaged products, defective items, accidents, security/police detail and mobile parking lot sweepers just to name a few.
This is STRICTLY PROHIBITED AND STRONGLY ENFORCED!! Why? Enforced due to reasons otherwise we would donate these items to charity or shelters for women. However, we can not due to numerous people returning items that they gotten from the dumpster is one reason another is liability. Example: A lady actually tried suing because the dumpster diving diva got hurt and cut from a perfume bottle that was disposed in the trash and proven thru our security tape However she did not succeed thus, she was banned from our stores. All because she got away a few times scouring due to our budget cuts.
So with the company loosing money through attorneys, court costs for prosecution on thefts we raise the prices on products and heighten prevention on bogus returns. we go to great links in trashing merchandise .
Destroying makeup products by spraying hair spray or raking a file through each one, diluting hair products with peroxide to weaken and destroy them and other items we spray paint to defect and protect them from being returned or used and so on.
We use several tactics yet unfortunately we do not have the time effort or manpower to do each piece so yes they maybe a few slip ups.....
However we destroy 85% mandatory .
📍Physically exposing yourselves to chemicals, bacteria, foreign agents, cross contaminated products you ladies are ♻️on your face, chancing your hair to fall out, obtaining broken glass or burns from industrial floor cleaning agents, and or a combination of all doesn’t seem exciting to me
public embarrassment climbing out and ultimately bail money as you’ll be exposed with your name and pic in the paper and social media for trespassing, littering, and criminal damage to property after leaving glass and debris on the ground .

I work at Ulta, and I can tell you that those products that were found "still in the box" were definitely used by somebody before. We do have a policy where we send damaged items back to corporate if certain brands ask for them, but otherwise they get thrown away. If you don't mind that, to each their own.

Lipgloss, mascara and and thing in a tube you should throw away. Reg lipstick you can cut the top and dip in alcohol to disinfect, the same with eye products. Everything needs to be cleaned throughly with Alcohol at the highest percentage you can find. You can save the mascara brushes if you clean well, but never use the product. Pink eye is no joke.
The first time I went dumpster diving I found like 20 Anastasia lipsticks and 6 single eyeshadows 🤤 blessed

suany castillo but I would be real careful about what your using as far as testers for the eyeliner or anything that would go near my eyes because then you run the risk of hepatitis and AIDS transfer but if you could just break it off at the tip or burn it maybe. A lot of times if it's a new powder you can just take alcohol and spray it lightly and swipe the top off and it will be alright a lot of those don't even look like testers though they look like actual product returns

I would not do that at less the products are sealed and not open before. You could get an infection that might cause you to go to the emergency room and that's probably more expensive than just buying it from the store!!!!

We use alcohol and brush cleaner for our PERSONAL collections we use on client. Our "kit". Now why would states all have certain standards for us to keep in a salon if it is so unimportant and EASYYYY to sanitize. Sure is not. Educate yourself and do not be a sheep and follow these kinds of people. Karma is a mfer. These girls will get sued when they make someone sick.

1. the germs just because it's In it's packaging doesn't mean it ain't used. I know alot of people (dumpster divers ) sanitize there products.
Also expired products don't seem dangerous but I watched a video of a girl who put new foundation on a glass slide and a expired foundation on a glass slide and she let them both sit out for 24hrs. ...the expired one had mold and weird colored fuzzy stuff lol
just make sure to check the expiry date ladies. 😁

You can not sanitize powder substance bacteria is unseen one of my friends mother lost her eyesight from eye makeup that had bacteria on it...testers are so dangerous with all the different ppl it is use on btw I keep my make up in its boxes so that doesn't make them new only if the seal is not broken on any makeup even lipsticks is the only way it is new be careful skin problems you can see a Dr. Eye problems they can't always fix so easily once lose your sight its gone forever good luck just stay safe...
The problem is them trying to sell these nasty ass busted palettes on mercari for what they retail for. You found it in a DUMPSTER. You don't get full retail! And then the damaged ones with every pan scraped they have listed for $15+ like...come on.

I used to work at a cosmetics counter. We had to discard all returns. The girls loved it because they would let us have it. Sometimes people wouldn't even have left the store yet and would make a return and we had to damage everything--unopened foundation, makeup brushes, perfume, everything.
You know if you scratch the broken ones mix it together with alcohol and then pour it into a container of your choice let it dry it is good as new and disinfected and you can mix it into a new shade or make a wide sampler

I work with companies like these and trust me sometimes we throw perfectly good stuff out just because some one returned it. Or maybe it fell and the soap or lotion pump broke. Literally we will just throw it In a bag n throw it in the dumpster. So when you work there you would realize it’s not that bad. Plus the inside of our dumpsters a pretty clean because it’s not close to any food places. So all that goes in there are boxes, clothes makeup. We have specific bins that we use to throw products and testers away in. So bathroom n lunch trash isn’t in the same trash bag as our products. So if you dumpster dive right n notice the bags then it’s really not dirty

Bacteria is everywhere, we know this 💁🏾 bacteria is in your mouth, on the food you eat, on the toilet you sit on, the light switch you touch, public door handles and so on. My point is that majority of the items we throw out are in brand new condition ✌🏾

Here's a trick on getting the powder in the compact back to a solid compressed powder: mist the compact with water, not too much. Then get a piece of plastic wrap and cover the powder compact. Press the powder firmly back into form a solid cake. Smooth out the rough spots then let dry, leaving the compact open. Don't touch it for at least 24 hours. Check it after 24 hrs. If it's dry enough to use, enjoy!
You guys got me thinking about dumpster diving, but my only concern besides the gloves is the eyeshadow and lipstick. Especially if someone decided to use the actual tester to put on their lips and eye infection or skin with the exposed make up. Especially with the return items, I wouldn't use the lipstick.

Btw I just want to let you know in case you plan on selling/using the used makeup you found. My cousin is an avid dumpster diver and she had found lots of good quality makeup (Kat Von Dee, Tarte & Anastasia, etc..). Some of it even looked intact or barely used. She was thrilled as fuck. Nonetheless, she did clean them and disinfected them with alcohol. However about 2 weeks later she got a huge eye infection. She developed the biggest conjunctivitis and her best friend got herpes on her lips from another dumpster dive despite having cut off some lipstick from the tube and having cleaned the gloss wand. Be very careful. I've since heard many horror stories from ppl that sell/buy/use used makeup found in dumpsters. Sometimes it's best to pay a little more and not fuck with your health. This is not a hate comment btw and perhaps it hasn't occurred to you YET but it can.

My concern is, even if you clean and sanitize this make-up, the bacteria can penetrate deeper into the product. So even if you clean the top of the eyeshadow, there could be bacteria that has penetrated deeper into the powder. Do you inform people that you got the make-up out of the dumpster before selling it?
In India, children are forced in working in the mines to look for mica which is used in makeup. In America, people return makeup everyday and it gets thrown out. Something needs to be done about this.

How do you dumpster dive without being caught, especially in the day time? I've always wanted to but been nervous
You have to be fast. You shouldn't be out there more than 5-10 minutes. If you have rubber washable gloves it's faster. You can get in the dumpster too. A lot of people park next to the dumpster and just scour it as fast as possible and gtfo.
It depends on the state but most times when something is thrown in the trash it’s free game it’s not like it’s private property or anything
So one time I got super sick and ended up with pink eye due to the virus I had and this happened to be a week or so after I had just purchased brand new concealer, mascara, eyeliner and an eyeshadow palette. After getting sick and having PINK eye, I went into ulta and told them what had happened and they allowed me to exchange ALL my products. I brought my old products in placed back in their boxes and sealed all the products in a zip lock bag.
Welllll hopefully a dumpster diver didnt find my returns 😬😂
tbh anyone can do what they want this day in age, no, dumpster diving is not the best thing ever but everyone has the right to look and feel pretty. Not everyone has money laying around to buy expensive makeup. If people need to do this kind of stuff then so be it. Even if they do have money laying around and are just doing this for the fun of it, its still not our place to judge.
