  • "Thou Shall Not Steal" is usually associated with the property and possessions of others. How can it be understood in terms of the Exodus from Slavery brought about by God for His Holy People.
Fr. Bill discusses the 7th Commandment in terms of People, as well as Property, and relates "You Shall Not Steal"t to the dignity of labor God brought to the People of Israel in contrast to Slavery for a powerful overlord.

3 Hail Marys for you Father 🌹🌹🌹🙏🏻 Thus far I have learned things I hadn't realized, or perhaps had sat through the lesson with wandering mind. My mind often wandered when I was young. That's why it's good for me to continue learning about the Faith.
I don't remember what happened last year that prevented me from viewing/listening to this series. It looks like I had gathered the series into a playlist, but for whatever reason had stopped at the 7th Commandement. I'll have to go search for the remaining lessons.

Father if I may ask, Since this commandment clearly applies to copyrighted material and from what I understand, piracy of movies, tv shows etc is a violation of this commandment. So my question is; how does this apply to pirating movies, tv shows etc. that are no longer available to purchase/rent legally? such as old films and decades old shows that are no longer sold/rent/streamed via legal platforms. Is it still sinful? if so is it of a grave matter or venial? And thank you for the wonderful content

Sounds like you already think it's wrong, but are looking for a way to split hairs - or debate someone else who is trying to split hairs - and develop an excuse. People also tend to, personally, get particular on whether a sin is mortal or venial (as if someone will more likely do something less serious because it isn't "mortal"); but sin is sin, particularly when deliberately committed - and splitting hairs and/or reflecting on if a sin is mortal/venial is deliberation - and a tool of temptation: "You can do it if it's not as bad as other sins! God won't mind (as much)!".
My purpose in these videos is not to get into the minutiae of how we apply them, but to present the general principle.
My answer is to use your conscience properly formed in light of Church Teaching and in light of the Ten Commandments. We don't need "holy mommy church" hold our hand to tell us when and if every action is sinful or not, or if sinful, if it is grave, mortal or venial. The Church is there to teach and guide. Videos like these help to expand our awareness, and form our conscience to help deliberate these things for ourselves.

@@fr.williamnicholas955 Thank you Father, I think I understand now. And again, thank you for the wonderful content. I'll be looking forward to the rest of this series on the commandments and other future videos. Deo Gratias

What you described old material no longer available is what is usually known as free domain usually due to loss of copyright or time which has lapsed. Not stealing to acquire these things for enjoyment

    Stealing is the 8th Commandment?
What is the context of this, and the rest of the 10 Commandments listed in this video.
    Thanks

Stealing is the 7th Commandment according to the ordering found in the Book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy also separates Coveting into two categories, spouse and goods. That is the reference and context from which the Catholic Church derives its numbering. Watch the first video in this series. ua-cam.com/video/4nPNM4MRQ8g/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
