- "Adversaries from the East should not even think about testing NATO's Article 5", Germany warned as it sent the first troops for a 5,000-strong brigade in Lithuania. Russia said the first German permanent foreign deployment since World War Two was meant to create "hotbeds of danger on our borders". The Kremlin also slammed the US for its military presence in Japan that has been a stumbling block in Moscow and Tokyo reaching a peace treaty. Meanwhile, Lithuania has opened an investigation after Russia's embassy in Vilnius was vandalised two nights running, police said on April 8.

If anyone bothered to actually read Article Five, they would discover that it contains no obligation for any country to do anything. It leaves the response to any situation up to the individual country.
