    A few things to keep in mind about Autism is that it's not a disease or an illness. It's just a variation for the human brain to function and develop. People who have it aren't less than those that don't have it. There just different, regardless of how the condition affects them. Another thing to keep in mind is that autism isn't a linear scale with it being more or less. It's a very broad spectrum in the sense that it's more like a circle. Regardless of the traits, they may have challenges and abilities that someone else doesn't have etc. People with the condition don't fit into a box. Also in many cases, people who have "mild" autism don't experience reduced struggle. They just do a better job of covering up the Autistic traits they have to pass as Neurotypical.

    I have history of:

    (From when I was a child and some symptoms still present in adulthood)

    * speech delay ( used to have speech delay a long time ago)
    * incredibly delusional personality and sensory perspective of myself and trouble changes in bizarre behaviors ( I used to have that problem, but still engage in repetitive behaviors and have some kind of limited interests )
    * developmentally delayed chronological age
    developmentally delayed IQ
    late toilet training and problems with tying my shoes ( That was a long time ago )
    * some symptoms related to dyslexia ( I had trouble reading, but it slowly got improved )
    * some coordination problems ( I don’t have coordination problems anymore)
    * developmentally delayed social skills ( used to have trouble understanding verbal and none-verbal social cues and had abnormal eye contact when I was a child and a young teenager and used to to have blank facial expressions, used to not cry when I needed something and etc, when I was a toddler)
    ( when I was a young child )

    * disorganised speech
    * strange facial expressions
    * self-abusive behaviors in frustration ( such as, head banging and hitting myself in the head for sensory needs or when routine changed and when I could not communicate correctly at that time )
    (From childhood to adulthood )

    * trouble changes in from one transition of the environment to another ( I am more likely to suffer from mental health issues ( such as delusional disorder with manic mood swings )) if my transition changes from one environment to another
    ( From childhood to adulthood )
    ( ADHD was discovered when I was a young teenager and taking medication for it )
    * unusually hyperactive
    * trouble with focus
    * spacing out
    * drifting out

    I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, now I just get identified as a person with medical diagnosis of Autism
    * I Don't avoid eye contact
    * I normally don't have a problem with communication
    * I am tired of people asking " Why do people with Autism avoid eye contact? " Excuse me? There are people who have medical history of Autism and have pretty good eye contact and that's Ironic, because Nerotypicals can avoid eye contact, also, it doesn't explain Autism very well, because Nerotypicals can have sensory issues too and restricted Interest too and have truble reading facial expressions too! So how do you find out who is X,Y and Z?
    * I don't have much restricted Interest and normally don't share them
    * I do have some sensory issues
    * I used to have a problem with my instincts
    * I have negative reactions to sounds

    I have profound Intellectual Disability, because I was once severely autistic and profoundly developmentally disabled

      when we are interested in something like cars for example, we know everything about it and we are so focused on cars; the name, the colors, the design...everything! this is called enciclopedic knowledge and hyperfocus which are one of the many abilities we have with autism.

    I liked horseback riding but I‘m allergic to horse food or something so I had to stop! I know when I was a kid my interest was marine biology haha, in retrospect stuff like that makes more sense now that I know more about being on the spectrum haha. I know I love to draw 24/7 and only within the last year did I ever even consider the idea of getting tired of art when someone asked how I don’t get disinterested after so long. I can’t imagine not wanting to draw for a whole day!

    I was once profoundly developmentally delayed to the point were I was psychotic until I became 7 years old, I was mixing fantasy with reality into my own repeated interests, I had fear of dinosaurs and etc, had some symptoms of Paranoid Psychotic Disorder, had visual and auditory sensory issues that looks like full-blown Schizophrenia, had profoundly delayed social skills and Intellectual Disability and even now, I have very low IQ and don’t know how to do math and other subjects at all, but only know how to use computers later on and I used to abuse myself by hitting myself in the head and depressed, because I could not communicate in a way others would understand me and when used to get angry at that time, I was a danger myself and others, I even have a medical record that I used to hit and fight others when I would get angry

    I agree with a lot of the comments saying that this video is in need of review. To those who failed the NCLEX, if this is what you were studying, I can see why. As an autistic person AND as a professor of anatomy and physiology, this video was pretty 'cringe'. Autism is a *developmental condition*, which can (but does not always) affect our speech. I wouldn't even consider autism a disorder anymore. I honestly couldn't get much past the first minute or so of this video because of how many times I heard the word 'disorder'. It's not right. 75% of the population develops the textbook way, and about 25% of us developed in our own way. That's all. We don't go around calling the other 75% of the population 'disordered' for thinking differently than us. Who is the actual one with a disorder in this situation....

    A concern that I have is what constitutes as autism when it comes to not fitting in with others. This could be confused with general antisocial behavior or may be a result of being sheltered and not learning how to interact with others. So is there any specifics to tell autism derived social awkwardness from others?

    • @suzeq2b
      @suzeq2b 7 років тому +1

      Nicolas Jaramillo you need to look at all the behaviours. There are 3 categories that they need to show one or more things from each of the 3 behaviours. Just like in this course - Communication, social interaction and Thinking/Behaviour.
      So for example regarding my son one of many under communication was no speech at 2 years of age, under social interaction he would not try to share what he was interested in and finally for thinking /behaviour there were many - flapping, spinning, tippytoe walking, lining toys up. There were many other things but that is an example for you.....hope that helps

    I think I know for sure I’m the case that I have this because no matter what everyday is like I just can’t seem to stop eating anything chicken it’s literally one of my favorite things to eat especially pastas but pasta types are restricted towards me because I don’t like all of them just some kinds of them as well as macaroni and cheese or mash potatoes and I know anyone reading this will think I’m an odd human being for this and this is kinda crazy of a thing but I am generally not all that interested in marvel or dc however my only exception is my hero academia oh my god if you were to know me I would be able to explain almost the entire storyline of the show/manga or whatever and even make up a whole lot of theories for characters and stuff like that but sometimes I feel like I have more interests than what I know what to do with because I did love other things that anyone growing up in the early 2000’s would understand along with me but what I dislike the most of having asd is how my it’s like my whole body will get all squirmy and tense every single time I’m forced to sit and stare at fireworks it suck’s especially if I am forced to hear them close to my ears it got bad I found my self doing one of my most commonly seen stims I do if I’m ever in distress or overwhelmed by all the environmental stimuli of explosion like sound in my head I thought of every fireworks as gunshots I’m pretty sure I even shed a couple tears that day which wasn’t so long ago and it’s embarrassing because I’m basically 20 years old ok that’s a lie I’m 19 almost 20 but it’s like no matter what I just can’t seem to grow up from it or grow out of this distress however it’s not all terrible because I am completely fine with them going off far away from me but near my ears makes me want to sit there and die right then and there a positive though is I can understand the reason dogs are terrified of them I wish I could have a dog so I can comfort him or her just as I am in distress with him or her and we can comfort each other together I’m also highly interested in animals and I just think a dog would be perfect for me because he or she could try comforting me if I’m in distress from the fireworks or I can do the same for him or her aswell but I hate I haven’t grown out of this because every fourth I’ll have to get some excuse not to be forced out into that park to see the fireworks and plans will have to be adjusted for me so I can be comfortable and calm while being in the car watching them from it but it would suck if I do that every fourth because I know I would ruin my brother and sister having a good time with all that it’s not all my fault though because it’s just who I am and I really do hope a cure to it will be discovered and maybe if I could get it maybe I wouldn’t have it anymore and maybe I can finally grow out of being such a baby towards fireworks going off and even balloon explosions.
