Cessna Citation Mustang Landing Dallas Fort Worth International Airport runway 35C and aircraft icing. On the climb out I picked up some clear ice. When the deice boots are activated they are inflated with bleed air from the engines. The expanding rubber boot breaks the ice and it falls away into the slip stream. This video shows much more of the cockpit instrument panel and you can easily see me paging through Garmin G1000 to load the Bonham six arrival and the ILS 35C approach. I have an ipad on which I've loaded the Foreflight app and I've just started to use it. We still have to carry the paper charts though. Air Traffic control communications can be heard in the 2nd half of the video.
Video taken with an iPhone 4s
Your nice panel shots are greatly appreciated, just what aviation buffs want to see more of.
Hello, I am from Brazil, in my opinion it's wonderful to share your flights side by side in the airplane, as if we were flying with you as a copilot, following and learning a lot with you. Keep filming and posting this beautiful job. I'll always be following you.Congratulation Captain.....
Hello Carvalho. thanks for watching from Brazil.
You're welcome, Captain. Have a nice week, if you are flying, surely your week will be spectacular...🛫👍👏
I am always amazed how much area that airport comprises.
Looked like a fun, old school landing. Nicely done Captain.
Thanks Steve.
As a approach/departure controller at DFW its really cool to see the other side of things!
mjlaplante Hi glad you liked the video. I was there last Wednesday. Very busy. The reason I post these videos is so that people can see what it's like. When I first started uploading it never occurred to me that controllers would find them interesting but I'm glad you guys do, you've got a lot to add to the conversation.
Great view of the cockpit and your work inside Jim
thanks Jorge.
Love the instrumentation view. I have been studying other cockpit layouts and watching simulations to learn more about the instruments. I am a 'wannabee' pilot. Too old and not in good health so I have to live vicariously through others.
You're not alone mike. Even without a health issue it's gotten so expensive that lots of people who would learn to fly express that interest through UA-cam.
Great video! The icing shot was awesome.
Thanks Jamo1187.
It's great seeing a magnified taxiway diagram on that huge MFD, especially at a complex field like DFW. Anyone who misses a turn with this installed should be paddled on the ramp.
Cool cam angle!
Thanks Skyyguyy. I wanted to show the detail available with the moving map display. There's actually an airport diagram chart that I would normally select for taxi operations.
captmoonbeam
My initial thought was, you were demonstrating moving map detail. Good deal.
''misses a turn with this installed should be paddled on the ramp.''......naked.
Amazing! greetings from Spain
J.D. Garcia Thanks J. D.
Great video! Thanks for recording the full approach and have such a great camera angle!
Thanks kaipeternicolas. This was the best view I could get that showed the maximum instrument panel area. Unfortunately, the forward view through the windshield suffered because of it.
captmoonbeam Oh the view is great. I am personally not that interested at what's ahead since I am used to those views ;) I am more into the jet operation procedures ;) Thanks!
captmoonbeam were you flying this solo?
Thanks aston
Best video. I could see the instrument panel and the view, great thanks.
Thanks.
Is it me, or does the Synthetic Vision make you look like you're way low on the glide path?
I'm subscribed, it seems all the mustang flights are older. Does the outfit you fly for still have the mustang in its fleet?
Great work sir. Love the way this video is set up, great film work. Greetings From Collin County, Texas
+Central Texas Rail/Jet Productions Many thanks and hello. Hope you guys are having better weather today. We are getting rain and flooding.
Yessir, It is quite a bummer. Also not to mention the tornado we had the other day. Cheers!
Awesome ride, Captain!
+Carl Heydman Thanks Carl and happy New Year to you.
muy buen video completo gracias amigo c.p. saludos
Excellent video. Thanks for uploading it. There's something I'm curious about. Early in the video you said that the speed warning you got was for exceeding 250 kts. I don't understand that, since the max cruise speed of the Mustang is 340 kts. Was it because you were descending and 250 kts. is the maximum descent speed?
That's a really good question. The maximum indicated airspeed is 250 kts. that's what the warning was for. A cruise airspeed of 340 kts would be a True airspeed(how fast your actually moving through the air). As you go higher and the air becomes less dense and the difference between the indicated airspeed and true airspeed becomes greater. At 35,000 feet you may have a true airspeed of 340 kts and at the same time the airspeed indicator may only be indicating 190 kts.
captmoonbeam Thanks for getting back to me Captain. I understand what you're saying, but when the airspeed warning went off you were descending and your altitude was only 13,000 ft-from what I could make out. So would there be that much of a difference at that altitude between the indicated and true airspeed?
Jeff Puha
Ok Jeff, here it is. I pulled out the flight manual and the closest chart to 13,000 is the 15,000 ft cruise chart. At 15,000 ft, 8,000 lbs, max cruise, and -15C, the indicated airspeed is 246 kts and the true airspeed is 314 Kts.
captmoonbeam Oh. OK. That's interesting. That's quite a difference. So where would the plane achieve the 340 kt. max cruise speed Cessna advertises?
captmoonbeam I see from Cessna's technical info that they say the 340 kt, max cruise speed is at 35,000 ft. at "mid-cruise weight". Does that tally with what you've experienced?
Capt, I noticed that the approch speed was very, very slow, close to 95-100kts. Were you empty or it is the standard approch speed for an "average" weight and balance? Another thing to consider, is the Mustang belongs to a "light jets" class, isn't it? Congrats! And just to remember you were single pilot at DFW! Not esay, hum? Keep posting!!! Hugs!
Thanks Pouso. The Mustang is a VLJ and has a very low ref speed. I was empty also.
Say Captain, we recently had a heated hangar discussion about having too much in the cockpit, and then I just seen your video where you are looking at your Ipad. LOL. What is your feeling about this? Have a nice day.
I had just downloaded Foreflight for the ipad a couple of days before and was trying it out. We're required to have paper charts for our 135 operation. As you can see on the Garmin 1000 in the Mustang the the display is much better than what you would have on the iPad. I personally like to keep the clutter down but, I put the ipad up front as a backup but it's not normally on.
captmoonbeam I agree and know about the charts requirement. Most of us feel you can't get enough info. but when I use to fly single, I like to keep it simple which most of the old timers here agree with. I wish I was still flying. Love your videos. Told all the guys in the hanger about you and they will try it out. Most say they never go on you tube. Hey Captain, be save up there.
What is the blurred out area upper right corner of pilots side display? Was this intentional? Thanks for the fine informative channel.
I think it was probably the N#
Thanks. I have watched many videos DFW approach and Citation V's. The cockpit is almost paperless. Fantastic. Does the Mustang have a Garmin system(GPS)?
+sundevilification Sorry Sir, I was waking up. I got the answer. X=Controller. Good day.
What are the 2 small buttons on the yoke.
The red one on the left is the auto pilot trim disconnect button. The little one on the right is the Transponder ident button.
I also fly the C510 and intercept the LOC in magenta because the Ap always overshoot regardless the speed. Would you have an explanation for that ? By the way I really enjoy your videos!
thaks Camille. Sorry, I don't have an answer for that.
I know the cabin is pressurized, but Is the baggage area?
+Jay Birdd Thanks for watching Jay Bird. No it isn't but, on the plus side, it does have a lot of baggage space in the forward and aft baggage areas.
Capt. how does the mustang compare to the other citation aircraft you fly? I know it is somewhat smaller but it's a "racy" looking airplane, and the glass cockpit is beautiful.
I'm a big fan of the Garmin panel. It's very capable. Nothing against the Mustang but I prefer something that goes higher, faster and further.
Some may either want higher, faster, further or if not, just get a J3 cub taildragger at the other extreme.
Great video! I've often wondered where do you park private jets at an International airport? A special location or where the controller directs you?
They go to pre-determined FBO’s. (Free Based operators). They can offer rental hanger space, get fuel do their flight planning, etc.
Question about the "ice-boot", why don't they just put heaters on the leading edge and just heat it up to like 150 degrees Fahrenheit instead of inflate a boot? Seems easier to heat something than install a complicated inflatable rubber boot on something........
+darkmath100 My guess is that the electrical load would be too high. Each engine drives a generator that by itself is required to carry the full load in icing conditions should the other generator fail. Some of the Citations have an electric cuff on the wing in front of the engine that is electrically heated and the rest of the wing leading edge is deiced by a boot.
captmoonbeam I can't image it's hard to generate that kind of power. The only cost would be the extra fuel you would burn generating extra electricity.
+darkmath100 The boots knock the ice entirely off.. It stays frozen and flies away. If it were heated, the ice would melt into water, which would run over the wing and refreeze elsewhere- where it couldn't be booted or melted. Could probably get into hinges for flaps or ailerons and cause issues, as well as just freezing on the top or bottom of the wings and obstructing smooth airflow/damaging generation of lift.
Boot - Boots it off the wing
Heat - Melts it and spreads it all over the wing
James Keller Thanks. That makes sense.
+darkmath100 Sure thing :^)
One day i'll be flying a citation mustang! i love it
Evilec Paz thanks Evilec.
captmoonbeam Hi again captmoonbean, thanks for the videos specially for the mustang wich i love a lot. What license do i need to fly this light jet if i buy one?
does it have dual ga headset ports just wondering?
yes it does.
ok cool, thanks
Do you fly this plane recreationally (considering its a little smaller than most other jets)? Like say you just feel like going for a flight on a random afternoon is this the plane you take? Also do you haul passengers in the Mustang? And is it roomy in the seats in the rear of the jet? Sorry for the book of questions haha.
Hi Kelly, thanks for watching. I used to fly this airplane till it was traded in for something larger. The owner was a pilot and he used it like it was the family car. I flew it when the airplane was used for a charter trip. There are four club seats in back that have plenty of room. One surprise about this airplane is how much baggage space it had. It had a nose and tail baggage area both of which had lots of room.
Thanks again captmoonbeam for answering my countless questions. You've been a big help in me gaining some knowledge about aircraft.
Very interesting, thank you.
Hi Hijkl. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
hey Cap'm
i'm merely an experienced flight sim guy, but....have thousands of hours doing that. also have the really cool Flight1 Version of this Aircraft. one thing i notice constantly.....and i'm even seeing it here in the 'real one', and that is, despite that we've got a Flight Director Depiction floating over our Attitude indicator, i'll observe often, that, it's not necessarily behaving or 'oriented' to what otherwise, say our LNAV, HDG or VOR lateral inputs are doing. i've seen it 'flying away' to the top portion of the AI, perhaps in FLC mode, or even VS mode, or in a serious 'tilt' or bank' depiction when, my lateral nav inputs are commanded opposite? what's the deal with our beloved FD? from my experience ( albeit, in the sim...yet they've made these things quite realistic...) they are not necessarily to be 'followed' blindly, without some crosschecking. any inputs from the Pros? thanks so much!!
Absolutely right Drumdude. Never follow it blindly. From my own experience once I disengage the autopilot and continue to the airport and landing visually, if I don't remove the flight director it will follow what ever it was previously set to, it may be flying to a fix on the inbound course or trying to maintain a previous altitude. The flight director doesn't perceive that the situation has changed and the pilot has left it out of the loop.
drummerfella 55 in most flight sims the GPS sequences to the missed approach automatically, in real life aircraft we have to push a button to start the missed approach. your FD will try to take you missed after the MAP, usually the end of the runway. If I'm on and ILS my FD is good to the runway.
Nice!!!
I prefer ice in a glass or in the ice bucket.
So do I.
Even for sing!e pilot, way too much heads-down in the approach environment.
if you paid for the full runway you sure didn't use much of it.
I should have gotten a discount on the landing fee.
have to try that at Boston Logan
