Although studio/album versions will always represent the real soul of a song, no doubt about that. I have to admit though, this perfomance bears its own magic. Don't get me wrong ... yeah, we have a better technology now, we would have far more possibilities, but honestly, today, you'll never recreate such a characteristic atmosphere on stage, even less due to the fact that everything is plainly digital - for some reason, I miss those "less clean" features. Especially when the base part kicks in, accompanied by the piano/keyboard, there is a certain depth creating a spacial reverb that pulls you into the song's atmosphere, yet I can hardly describe it. And, yeah, I was just born in the same year this perfomance took place. Especially Chris Rea's music is a tremendous part of my first years, music from this era was omnipresent on the radio and tv. I'm thankful, that I stayed with 80s music during my youth. Although I'm too young in someone's eyes, at least I witnessed the downfall of music in the 90s, leading up to this utter crap of monotonously similar produced pop-music that's playing since 2000.
Thanks for sharing. Good for you. I agree for the most part about the music today. But We do still have song smiths like Chris Rea, Newton Faulkner, Phillip Poisel,, and others putting out decent soul centered music.
