I walked into the prayer room October of 09. I have no grid for the moment. I’m not charismatic I fly from California on the advice of a friend. I was a 40 year old man who had encountered Jesus only 2 years earlier. This hippy looking kid, Corey asbury, is singing “no more shackles, no more chains” and I am overwhelmed with the presence of God and I speak in tounges for the first time because I have no words. And I don’t believe in this stuff. It’s 10pm and the place is packed and wow. What a moment I will never forget it. Life changing does not begin to describe that moment.

@@fredwallace4681 I don’t believe that’s true at all. Our interpretation of God will not be flawed if we simply stick to scripture rather than random thoughts from our own mind. There’s artist by the name of Tauren Wells, who wrote a song called all about you and one of the lines is and I don’t wanna waste my time with thoughts from my own mind because I am not the answer. if we stick to truth, we will never have a flawed view or interpretation of God and who is and Jesus Christ and who he is and what he’s done for us. It’s when we rely too much on our own opinions in our own views and our own experiences that we end up with, a flawed view of God like seeing him as reckless. That might be true from a human standpoint, but is it true from a biblical standpoint? Absolutely not. We can’t apply words and phrases to God that aren’t rooted in truth. God’s love is relentless and everlasting but is it reckless? No. God gave us his word to follow. There are verses that describe his love and not one of those verses calls it reckless.

When he said "It's clunky for families" I felt that! We were a part of (and still are in a different degree) a local prayer room when we had our first child. At that time, I had a leader come to me at the time and she said "You need to be here! He (our son) needs to grow up in the house of prayer!" . I know she didn't mean to say it in a condemning way, but my response was "He is growing up in a house of prayer. Our home is a house of prayer." and I never heard that comment again. Unfortunately, sometime the HOP structure can be strenuous on families and it is so important for husbands and wives, mothers and fathers to remember that our first ministry, after being a living sacrifice unto God, is our family. If that is failing, all else will as well. Living before the Lord and offering your worship to Him doesn't have to be in a house of prayer, it can be done anywhere! Being called to be an intercessory missionary is a beautiful calling and one that should be followed! But not at the expense of your relationship with your family.

This was a bit confusing. As followers of Christ, of course we are all about grace. We are all saved by grace. But we do have the need to encourage one another in kingdom living. And that includes spurring one another on in seeking Godly living. It's not about criticizing one another. But I just felt that u were not willing to take a stand against blatant sin concerning these pastors and leaders that are involved in very serious scandals. The Bible is our standard and whether we can admit it or not, leaders of the church, not a church, the church: body are held to a higher standard. We all fail at times. But does that mean we don't speak Truth according to Gods Word? Love both of u but I feel we all are too easy on sin... both our own sin and others. All must be done in love but must be done. The balance of grace and standing firm on sin has to be Spirit led. But we have to be strong. These men and women that don't represent God by sex sin and greed for money and power. And fame!! They should be held accountable. Idk why that is largely not being done. Mostly not being done by charismatics. Of which I am one. The non charismatics have no problem calling them out and using it against us. But they are right a lot. Being Spirit filled should be a walk of more holiness not a liscense to sin!! Again, this isn't about being judgmental, it's about holding up a standard. Gods Word!! Our compass in this world. Again, I appreciate u both but think about your platform. We all have to guard against compromise. In the way we represent Jesus. By the way we walk, talk, and live. Blessings to u both!❤️

Love this beautifully raw and honest podcast. The fact that Corey chose to raise his family over money, fame, and sold out arenas. My Lord. That’s what is missing from their generation and those kids are going to be world changers because their dad chose them over everything else. I don't know if you will ever see this, but WOW! This discussion was way more than I expected to get out of it! One of my all time favorite worship songs is Reckless Love, and I literally cry every single time. And just listening to all the flack you received, my heart really understands. The church has its issues for sure. I grew up in the church with a pastor as a father, and I watched the church terrorize my family for living in obedience and following His direction. And so I get that feeling. And then when I heard your story about how you chose your family over more money and fame, etc, and just a little over 2 months ago, my husband walked away from a job (for very different reasons) to protect and heal our family as well in obedience to God. He still doesn't have a job right now, but your story encouraged me that doing the right thing may not look like we expect, but we can count on God leading us, protecting us, and guiding us. He will be there through it all. Thank you for that encouragement. I just started bawling as you talked about that because it was a God moment for me to hear that. Thank you for that!

Such a good conversation to listen in on today. “We are not going to change the world with our opinions. We are going to change the world with our art.” Dying to self has to include dying to my right to have an opinion. Paul put it best, "...make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, mind your own business, and keep your hands busy in your work." To Cory's point on Jesus' kindness, it was Brennan Manning's book, The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus, that began healing my perception of God. My heart's cry is: Father, purge me of anything that distorts my perception of You.

I am liking this interview overall, but I have a lot more expectations for sanctification in a mature believer’s walk, and we absolutely need to be clear and hold the line about the requirements about pastor & elder leadership. You both talk like “nobody know or nobody gets to decide.” Actually that’s bull too because the Bible is abundantly clear about the requirements of leadership, and Mike Bickle, Carl Lentz, Robert Morris, what have you are biblically disqualified from church leadership, and there is profound pastoral safety for the flock of Christ in that recognition and acknowledgment.

You are correct. The Bible is explicitly clear about the qualifications for the role of a pastor, and those who do not meet those qualifications should not be put in a place of authority. Those who abuse that role should not be allowed to remain in a place of authority And power over people. People like carl Letz, Robert Morris, Mike Bickel, and Mike Pilavachi of soul survivor in the UK who abused hundreds of boys, including Worship Leader Matt Redman must face accountability and should not be allowed to be in ministry. They must be held accountable. There is a higher standard for pastors, and they will be judged much more harshly.

I love the genuineness of this interview. Thank you for choosing your family Cory. I’ve been in that season before. I heard from the Lord to step down, yet I ignored. I ended up getting demoted because the grace had left. I wonder if you hadn’t listened to God and taken that year off, what craziness might have happened. Possibly, something could have taken you down or caused you to stumble. So glad that you chose to obey. Your family being intact is the reward.
    Hope that makes sense lol.

Admitting to only reading partial of Gods word and reading only the "grace and love" portion... shows the obstructed view of God many have.
2 Timothy 3:16 "ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
Its not "church politics" its Gods word.
And respectfully, you do not just write songs for the church. You are a platformed worship "Leader".
Love requires truth and grace. Not just grace. A good father disciplines his children.
Its out of love i say this. I dont believe you're a heretic, everyones learning as they go but i do challenge you to read the full word of God and remember the only true power is through the gospel of Jesus Christ, not the eloquence of words or even your art.

This is the 1st time I've listened to your conversation. I love how your Authentic Saved Self wasn't sacchrined over to be a man-pleaser. You do have fire in your belly but your honesty, and Grace for yourself and others is clear. And, I am struggling with my belief that I'm not being treated fairly or good in this particular season of my life. I have to daily remind myself not to be discouraged and walk away from the thing I'm doing. I heard your words: being hidden is better than recognition ie being seemingly overlooked when one is using a## to get a job done.....I will now appreciate that particular move of God on my behalf.

Your knowledge of God augmented and helped to form mine. Songs like “Where I Belong” and “Always Faithful”, and “All I Need,” “I Have to Believe”… I can’t express what having music from people who write from a deep well of the knowledge of God means to me to this day. I sometimes wish I had the gift of evangelism "the standard way". But it comes out of my mouth all awkward unless I'm speaking about God's grace then it's effortless and filled with pure confidence. Huge sacrifice that Cory chose his family over a the money and flashy life. Well done!. Unraveling is the sountrack in my chapter right now. Whether its about family, church, marriage and the tearing town and rebuilding, reconstruction is happening right now but this time on the right foundation. It should feel scary but honestly its a relief. No agendas just recognizing where I'm at in these areas right now. Cant wait to see the finished plan Jesus has in store!

I always just assumed that with fame came greater opportunities and that your life would be hunky dory, but there's real sacrifice to attain those riches -- even with a song like "Reckless Love." I think the cool thing about Cory is that he's himself (which is what tons of ppl crave -- incl. myself growing up in the church) and still loves Jesus. The way he found Jesus should be a model for how we introduce others to Jesus. Instead of being afraid of people in their sin and brokenness, maybe that's exactly where they need to find him. And we don't have to be perfect to be loved by God.

That’s what’s coming out of your heart dude. I hear all the other nice things you’re saying. I know we all see words we shouldn’t say, but you’re actually on a podcast saying that you speak from and for Jesus and that God talks to you. Our family used to visit IHOPKC 3-4 times/year between 2005-2012, and I always loved being in the Prayer Room during Cory's sets. Really fun to hear him on your podcast! I can relate to his story about living a "double life" as a teenager, growing up in a Christian home myself and struggling through living under legalism but not realizing it back then.
Your question at the end, "what do I burn for?" was so timely. I burn for wanting people to feel seen, known, safe and loved. Wanting authentic relationships and providing safe community burn within me. I recognize that my attack is the feelings/fear of being unseen and unknown, of no value, not worth anyone's time and attention (I'm learning to recognize these things five years out of an emotionally and spiritually abusive marriage of nearly 30 years).
I sincerely appreciate you asking this question in this episode, Rita, because it caused me to write it down and see the strength in that burning. I see how it fuels my desire to communicate those feelings when I sing & worship, when I lead my home group, when I'm doing my job in my church's care ministries ... Yeah, really so good! Thank you for having real and honest conversations! These podcasts make me want to sit down and have coffee with you!

Your lyrics are so authentic, your voice, God gave you an amazing ministry. People should share with you more the impact your songs have had on their lives. The broken people in this world, adults abused as children, need to go somewhere alone, or shut the door and play your music until the hardness, the rebellionis plowed.
I am praying for a kid that I saw on facebook crying out. Walker P Inman III. Satan is keeping his huge inheritance from him and keeping him from the truth, under guard. when he really owns it all. Bound up In confusion,. How much more does satan do that to us and our inheritance in Christ. No friends, he has seen alot, literally being held captive, he has no concept of the Spirit behind it, wasting his life. so he will give up and destroy himself. He didn't get this way on his own. Only Jesus can show Him he does have a choice, there is a Savior and He is able to rescue him. ❤
