Yeah I hate the overuse of this term. It's a review bomb if a bunch of people who never played or bought the game review it just to gripe about something. If they purchased the game they have every right to review the game however they want.

    • @Moleculor
      @Moleculor 17 днів тому +21

@@anonony9081 Not just that, but even in the most charitable of interpretations, a review bomb could be current owners trying to force a reaction. Take the recent TF2 situation, where people who love the game campaigned for a bunch of negative reviews to be made to try and force Valve to take action about bots.
Arguably, that's a review bomb, because it's people not giving their honest opinion about the state of the game. Other than, y'know, the bots fundamentally being a part of the state of the game... but not one Valve are responsible for.
KSP2? No, the reviews there are all just about the state of the game.
It's broken, it performs poorly, the developer has gone missing, and the publisher has gone quiet. There's no one left for a review bomb to "convince", there was no mass campaign to try and force a reaction. It was just people reviewing the game and giving their opinions about it. Which is exactly what a review is.

I think I'll call this effect "Mandatory Sequel Syndrome". A special kind of development hell where a game that does well gets a TON of funding for a sequel, and then someone in a position of authority gets paranoid that it's not good enough to justify the funding. They're throwing out work and starting over, they're making constant late-stage changes, and ultimately nothing ever makes it out the door. Duke Nukem Forever or Half Life 3 for example. I have a thought for the EU KSP fans out there: I know EU courts tend to be a little more consumer leaning in comparison to the US in lawsuits against game companies, is there a possibility of filing an EU class-action lawsuit against Take-Two to essentially either force refunds, release the files or SOMETHING. Take-Two needs to be held accountable for selling us all this game, promising features and then shutting down the studio before we ever got those features. I know of other cases where studios promised features, never delivered and those companies got hit with fines in the EU after being sued.

@@ShadowZoneI was already skeptical when the project was announced, given the aggressiveness of the promised feature set and timeline. The coverage you've given of what's become public of the details of the project's development history has me convinced that it was already doomed at the time of announcement.
Was it ever viable at some time pre-announcement? I don't think the bean counters were ever prepared to invest enough money to do more than refresh the original code, and I don't think Star Theory / Private Division were ever prepared to limit themselves to a feature set that was realistic on the budget available, nor do I think that a rehash of KSP 1 would have gotten more than lukewarm reception from the community. The devs basically gambled that they could tell T2 that they could implement Nate's vision within the schedule and budget constraints in place, and then keep saying "it's almost done, just a bit of an overrun" until the project was late and overbudget enough to accommodate their desired feature set. In theory, someone early on could have convinced T2 that investing the money properly from the start to implement Nate's vision was the best way to make a profit off the IP, which I believe was the case, but the potential for that to happen was all the potential the project ever had. The community has been clamouring for a feature set matching Nate's vision from before T2 ever acquired the IP, but just a vision for a feature set that's in demand in three community isn't "potential", you have to have the resources to implement it, and that was never there.
That said, from before the project was even started, T2 had *one job*, from the community perspective. Implementing the game the community wants will require designing for a certain things from the start that weren't considered in the design of the original KSP, and whatever the strategy pursued in terms of what features are implemented first, the resources required to match KSP1 in the end game while implementing all the new features will be significant. The one good thing that could *possibly* have come from a AAA studio acquiring the IP was having the resources of a AAA studio behind the project the community wanted. So T2's one job was to take that community demand and invest the money to make it happen. They were never willing to do that.

It does require a little bit of effort to learn, as there's details that KSP did not have. Like the fuel types and grain, engine-bells affect performance based on design and other things.
Also, the planets are quite a bit larger than KSP, so you actually need more delta-v to reach a stable orbit.

The joy of KSP and KSP2 for me was taking an enormously complicated topic -- orbital mechanics -- and turning into a game. Now, I am not your typical gamer, and clearly folks like me don't create enough demand to fund tremendously expensive software development projects, so for now, we're left with a hole. But into that void, some independent studio is likely to one day introduce another physics-realistic simulation that will allow us to play and learn really interesting, really challenging science concepts, which is one of the more noble benefits of gaming. Shadow Zone, you're of like mind, and a very good journalist, so I hope you'll continue to report on science-based simulation games, and draw some attention (and maybe drive some sales) for small game productions that seek to satisfy our thirst for knowledge about the Universe through creative play. Surely this is a beat that will continue to be lively for many years to come.

I'm sticking with you! Don't give up. I am definitely interested in some of the ideas you mentioned:
    - Explore KSP 1 with the current mods that are available.
    - There is still some "life" left in KSP 2 depending on what happens. They push out the remaining code, someone does come along to continue it, see what modders can do with it, etc...?
    - KSP is of course the best! But are there other games that play with space exploration maybe not to the KSP level, but something we'd all like?
I would honestly love if some development team is out there and seeing all this thinks, "just give us a few years and we're going to take the KSP crown." I think back when SimCity crashed and along came a new king, Cities: Skylines. Maybe that history will repeat. I'm hoping...
Whatever you choose to do know that I enjoy your presentation and look at the gaming world. Be willing to experiment, I'll stay subscribed and follow you on this new path we all have to take. I set aside KSP as I got into other games and knew KSP 2 was coming. Okay, I now have a reason to return to KSP and believe me, there is still a lot for me to try. The journey continues... ;-)

While I agree that it was promised by marketing to contain colonies, interstellar, multiplayer etc., just to play devil's advocate, I have to mention that there is a big notice from Steam on every Early Access title that states:
"This Early Access game is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development."
and if you click on the more info:
"Its up to the developer to determine when they are ready to 'release'. Some developers have a concrete deadline in mind, while others will get a better sense as the development of the game progresses. You should be aware that some teams will be unable to 'finish' their game. So you should only buy an Early Access game if you are excited about playing it in its current state."
This is not meant as some sort of excuse for Take Two\Private Division, just a general reminder that you should buy EA games with it in mind that the current version may be the final one and if you are not yet happy with the state of a game, you should wait.
Now to the question, what I would like to see in the future of KSP2? I already went through the states of grief and made my peace with KSP2 being dead. I would nevertheless like some honesty from T2. Just some honestly about the future of the game, even if it is just an official confirmation about the game no longer being developed. I do like your idea about putting all the WIP features into some beta branch and let us have our hands on it, though.

8:10 Sorry to say this, but the problem with Early Access is that you pay for, well, early access to an unfinished product in excatly the state it is in when you do the purchase. You do not pay for anything that is planned further down the line, they (most of the time) only promise that you also get access to the finished product (if and when it gets finished) at no additional cost. But you do not pay for any planned but yet unreleased features - sure, you can expect them to be added but if development takes another route and those features get dropped, then it is what it is.
And this is why I never buy an early access game until it is clear that the game I want to buy is actually going to happen, no matter how good I wish it to be.
