I am a bassist but I come to check out your videos because I also learn a great deal of theory and I transcribe your saxophone licks as well to add to my bass playing. Keep doing what you're doing! You're not only helping the sax community but other instruments as well with your knowledge. Thank you so much 🙌🏼
Mmmm, love that Major 6 sound!
Bonjour Jay. Encore une super vidéo. Au plaisir de te revoir à l’usine Rigotti, Eric. 😉🎷
All your videos are professionally done. I especially like that your intro is short and sweet and you DON"T increase the volume on the intro 20 decibels and blow out my eardrums like 99% of everybody else.
I like to sneak in a passing major 3rd in minor chords. Only works if you pass over it though! Sounds great when used sparingly 😊
I'm learning blue bossa with my lessons teacher now.. this helped to explain it more and showed me the kind of sound I want on these minor chords. Thanks Jay!
Great to hear!
Thanks a lot!! Its so helpful for me.
Glad to hear that
I love blues music for saxophone. Jay I play blues music all the time
That's another sound that works well over minor chords.
Muchas Gracias !!!
Very lovely information
Love your sound. Great lesson.
Joel Blu
Thanks!
Jay Metcalf thank you for all the videos you’ve been making on your channel. They really help with finding the motivation to practice something new each session. By any chance, could you do a video over Sax mutes in the future?
I have one planned yes. Thanks Gaige.
Looking forward for that video. I dont have a studio and practising in my appartment. Very limited times of the day :((
You made chords and color a lot more interesting compared to my jazz teacher, thank you.
Major 6th is like magenta in a sea of sapphire blue. Love it.
Hi Jay! Excellent video with elegant colours and a lick. A privilege to have this lesson combined with your beefy sound
Thank you Nestor
I love Jay's videos! I use them in my classroom all the time. So informative and great content. Thanks Jay, keep them comin'. Peace be with you!
Thank Randall
Thank you for the great content! Informative and straight to the point with plenty of practical application 🎷🐛
Have been following ur teachings for some time now and I really love them...I would really love to practice as I learn from u but I don't have money to get the saxophone..I have just been watching d videos without practicing..I would really love if any1 could help...
dude you're awesome :) nice vid thanks! perfect way to demonstrate the sound!
Thanks!
I'm just discovering the sound of the 6th. To me, it's similar to a 9th; resolving to the 5th instead of the root. Really nice colour.
That's like 'String Theory' That leading tone is all powerful. The leading tone, it just freak me out!!!
Very nice one!
Thanks!
Very nice Jay. Love your tone. Are you using a Beyerdynamic Ribbon Mic on this...?
Yes I am!
Can you do a video for beginner saxophone recording to where it sounds good lol
sick
Your sound is especially full and powerful on this video. Sounds awesome. Different recording technique, ligature, mouthpiece?
Thanks, nothing different from usual. Same mouthpiece, horn, ligature, mic, hardware and settings.
Very nice colors! Jamie Anderson did a super nice rendition of your Better-Trax Blue Bossa a few days ago!
Yes, I saw that. He did not cite the source of the backing track in his video unfortunately though.
@@bettersax Oh yes he did!
Ok great, I must have missed that.
@@bettersax 30 seconds into the video it's on screen.
This is a really cool video! What saxophone and mouthpiece are you using here?
That's the BetterSax alto and the BetterSax Burnin' mouthpiece which you can find here bettersax.com/store/
@@bettersax oh cool! Thanks for responding !
You really have a nice rich sound. What mouthpiece/ligature and reed combination are you using?
That is the BetterSax Burnin' 7 alto mouthpiece with a Rigotti 2.5 reed bettersax.com/store/burnin-mouthpiece/
Hey Jay, was wondering if you could give me some advice.
I play tenor, and was looking to get a new piece. I tried the JodyJazz HR* at my tech and loved it, but it was a little bright for my taste (especially since I am looking for a darker sound).
Is it worth it to try and save longer for the Custom Dark, or is the difference not enough to quantify the price gap.
I am a minor, and have to save to buy things, so I can't really go out and buy the Custom Dark really.
You can probably find a used HR* in good condition at a bargain. The Custom Dark is great, but as a young player, probably playing in big bands etc, you may want the added power of the HR* while developing your sound. I suggest you get the HR* as it is a very solid all around piece and down the road you can experiment with something darker if you feel you need it. It's normal that it sounds bright to you now if you are coming from a stock mouthpiece.
I'm looking for a darker mouthpiece too. I'm on alto but trying for that honey tone, not shrill. Specially bought a bronze sax ( Wo20) BC it was reported to have a darker tone. I have the HR and don't care for it, keep reverting to the AP3, but that's not exactly right, either
@@bettersax thanks! alternating on two pieces currently, a Wolfe Tayne metal (.110), and a Link 6* from the 90s. I do love the HR* and the way it projected when I tried it, so thanks for the advice!
Also, I am not playing in bands really, my school doesn’t offer a band. I mainly play at home/with my teacher (former professional jazz musician)
Hi
Pls try to show use the Note you are playing for better understanding!
Hey Jay, when i see you playing i notice that you are adjusting your embouchure all the time when you go from high Tones to low Tones. Can you explain how this works??
That is a jaw movement that is essentially changing the point where your bottom lip is putting pressure on the reed. It gets moved up for higher notes and back for lower notes. It's not something that I could describe to you in detail since it is very much an unconscious adjustment. If you are working on long tones and developing your sound and intonation,, this motion will come naturally to you over time. Don't over think it since everyone is slightly different.
@@bettersax thnx Jay for your answere
Could you do a video about this?
Grts Karel
My sax teacher Ricky Ford use to say that try to not to move your jaw between high and low notes. I dont know why. And now i can do it without moving or minimum moving i thing. Just adjusting my larynx, tongue etc..
I’ve played alto and tenor for about 4ish years and I want to try soprano any tips?
Yes, have patience! Soprano is tough but you'll sound good on it with a lot of focus on your intonation.
I play trombone and still watch this😂
Like, comment and subscribe. All hail the algorithm!
Wait, so you first show dorian and melodic minor and then you again show major 6 and major 7? For me these are kinda the same
They are the same. The difference is that the second time when he's playing the major 6 and 7, he's adding them into a natural minor scale. So he plays both the minor 6 and 7 and the major 6 and 7, whereas with Dorian and melodic minor he only played major 6 and 7.
You're right though, he should definitely explain this better.
I'm highlighting the particular notes (colors) of first the major 7 over a minor 7 chord and then the major 6 over the same chord. Yes, these notes are present in multiple scales but don't let that confuse you. we have multiple options for what can work over harmonic contexts. A common trap is to always think of fitting a particular scale over a given chord.
Here I am trying to show you what 2 individual notes sound like over minor 7 chords. ideally you will want to become familiar with the particular sound of each note or chord tone when played over various chords.
For example both of these notes (major 7 and major 6) give a different color when played over a major chord.
Also the dorian mode does not have a major 7 in it. Dorian, melodic minor and harmonic minor are all slightly different.
Cruise ship.
While I quite like lots of the information you put out (with examples played- which I think is critical). But I always have a bit of a problem when talking about ‘colours’. I don’t see music, I hear it. So that never makes any sense to me at all.
Talking about ‘new’ or ‘different’ sounds that you can you (that you may not have before) is great. But it is sound.
I know it seems many people say it, but it always bugs me.
Ha! I also don’t take myself very seriously, so no big deal.
Something I found I seem to do a lot (after analyzing with Melodyne, which is really interesting) is I tend to play a lot of flat 9ths. I personally like that sound a lot (a major 7th held any time at all over minor sounds odd to me- but in passing sounds fine). But of course, I would not be suprised to hear many don’t like the sound of flat 9 either. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Mark, Sounds are frequencies of air vibration interpreted by our brains as sound. Colors are frequencies of light also interpreted by our brains as different colors. So the correlation is quite strong when you think of it that way.
