Just started learning to fly fish last summer. Bought one of your starter boxes, and been using your flies since. Thank you so much for all the info you've given this newbie!

I started off similar to you, my first time out and learning was on the infamous South Platte here in CO. The river was bit high and off colored just as runoff started. I was totally lost and was slinging every bug I could. The problem was, I didnt know how to read the water yet and was fishing extremely fast moving water in the main current. Now days, the first few minutes I get out of the truck I am looking at the water and checking to see if there are riffles, seams, bubble lines, eddies and plunge pools, from there I decide where to start, and after a last peak, I will decide on what bugs to tie on (95% of the time its a pair of perdigons). From here, I watch the line speed and adjust it with bug weight and tungsten putty. A side note, I never use any indicators unless i'm tossing a hopper dropper setup. Euro nymphing ftw!

I live on the Missouri in central Montana, short drive to Craig. World class trout waters on a big river are the closest options for me and it’s been a struggle to learn. There’s lots of sub surface food for them and they see a lot of fake foods.
Following your fly selection guide has made a huge difference for me.

Great info, never fly fished but want to learn. Moved to east Idaho and I have been bank fishing the rivers. I do ok but nothing like my friends that fly fish.

As far as the drag question, I generally set my drag a bit lower than what I think I will need, and then if I'm fighting a fish that needs to be on the reel I'll just use the heel of my palm and press it underneath the reel arbor and apply pressure while keeping my hand clear of the reel knob. Then when you need to reel in some line you can quickly grab the reel knob since your hand was already right next to it. Hope that makes sense.

Big river use the bank first. Sneak up and high stick the bank. Here they are deep with not much visual seams. Always the fish are tucked in on the undercut of the bank.
Tongariro NZ. You steam in there its allover for that section.

Justin, I am not aware of any daypacks that will carry a pair of waders and boots well. To bulky. Get fitted for a 3 day pack around 35-50L in volume. You should easily be able to carry waders, boots, a meal, a sawyer filter and 20 bottle, and your fly box. Strap your rod case vertically on your pack.
The most important thing is to get fitted properly. 50 well fitted lbs is a lot easier to carry than 20 ill fitted lbs.
