just wanted to say this hit home. I Landed 240k contract and it just came to me naturally because I specialized in a specific area of security. Great advice for everyone looking to break into the field.
What area ?
What area are you specialized in??
@@adedamola8761 cryptography for large enterprises
@@sharp_shot_1905 ryptography for large enterprises
@@idreesk7826 it’s so funny you say that because I’m in a cryptography class and after spending a lot of time learning the algorithms I really enjoy it too. If cryptography is in high demand I would gladly strive to become in expert in it with those paychecks
a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one
Build a strong foundation so that you can determine your specialization with the most info available. Plus you'll have the context and understanding to put your specialization to work in different situations. Specializations are how you ultimately become essential and add value to a company. I work in cyber and I saw my company moving towards Splunk and nobody else knew anything about it. So I dove into it, taught myself and now I'm the lead. One thing about becoming a specialist is you are hard to replace, but you will get more work and shoulder more responsibility.
I have to say the passion and insight you deliver in these videos just pumps me up. Because you come across so genuinely and realistic. Keep it up my man.
I never thought I wanted to do GRC until I found your page. I'm definitely looking into it now! I wanted to do IAM and similar before but GRC definitely looking pretty good.
High value under 20 minutes!.. Thank you so much!
Thanks Boyds!!! Your content is awesome....I'm going put ur advice into work
Boyd is preaching truth. I am looking for my first job in cybersecurity and what I have on my mind is GRC, thanks to Boyd. I’ll bet on myself to construct my career to get higher.
What certificates are you taking?
Wow! Wow!! Wow!!!
You are too much sir. I am from Lagos, Nigeria, but, I am loving every bit of your videos.
I feel like a rookie just learning from the scratch, despite my many years in IT.
God bless you sir. I tell you that you are the best career coach I have ever met in all my 22 years in IT.
This is solid, positive insight. I greatly appreciate your willingness to guide people such as myself. Thank you for that.
Number 2 hit me for sure. Thanks for this video
Back in 2016 in went to college and got my certification in cybersecurity and hacking . But at the time I had no experience even though I’ve applied to several jobs , had a good attitude but I wouldn’t get hired. Now I’m in diesel but still want to get back into it because that was my passion into tech, this was a reminder for me.
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing with us!
Graduate with my BSIT in April. Glad I found this video. 👍🏻
Great video! Being a specialist and perspective really resonated! Thank you!
This is great insight! Thank you 😁
I just got out the army on April so I will take the first key, thanks
Thanks for the pep talk
listening to your path, reminded me of my own. Great content, thanks!
Specialize not generalize is what i LOVED.. i have many friends in IT and i am a current cybsec BS student.. all of them say that is the most important thing. Great vid
Thanks!
Your so well spoken! Great advice about treating your career like a business.
Good stuff !
I just saw this and I just couldn’t go to sleep like I can’t every night and I stumble upon your video and I’m really thankful and it gives me hope and they gave me a new purpose in life. Thank you so much.
Yes I've heard you need so much training. I am in real estate but I would love to be in cyber security! Truly unbelievable!!!
You are awesome thanks for all of this
Good info to know. I’m considering going into cyber security field. I’ll be going for my bachelors and I’d want to also get my certs
Key #2 was fire.
awesome video!
Thank you for this video
🤯 Well you're pretty amazing! I'm proud of you- even though I don't know you, because it's just so good to see US being successful and passing on the knowledge. I been thinking of transitioning into cybersecuriy. This video is a big help thank you!
I am so interested!
thx for sharing 👏👏
Enjoyed your video.
I agree completely with what you said. Especially with the start small. Unfortunately, some folks may not have the long term focus or patience to put in the needed long hours of work with low pay to learn and build those high paying skills.
Some may balk at the low salary offered and not see the opportunity that is in plain site: get paid to learn. They may spend time and $ getting certs and feel entitled to a certain dollar amount. Anything less is an offence.
I heard once that each job pays you twice. The money you earn while working the current job and the money you'll earn when you move on to the next job. Our goal should be to make sure we acquire as much experience and knowledge in the current job so we can leverage the next job for a higher salary.
Don't be afraid of the hard stuff. In fact, the hard stuff should attract you. There are people who actively stay away from those hard and technical skills because they're hard and take a lot of time to learn. That's where the opportunity lies. In doing and learning what others won't.
Money follows Mastery. Master those hard, technical skills and the money will follow.
Thank you bro

great info! I've been in the IT field off and on, for 11 years. Just now getting with a "ok" company. Just need them to pay more for everything we support. Still wondering if I need to get certs to add to my skills.
I love your content and would love for your advice to help me through my process. If so that be great sir thank you.
Thank you
Great advice! Can a person with no experience in IT enter your program with same potential of success? Looking for a career change from a different field.
i liked your video although i felt like i was looking for how to get started rather than how to move around while already in the field.
Hey Boyd, thanks for the great advice! I never thought about the idea of asking the employer to pay for my certs. But I have a big concern, what if my employer asks me to sign a contract that states I have to pay back the amount invested in me if I ever decide to leave the company? How do I reply to that?
Thanks in advance!

Hello sir
Do u have free classes.
If someone cannot afford what can he do?
But i like your keys tip thanx for that.
I really am appreciating your content brother. Am actually from Nigeria, I don’t have any I.T skill or knowledge, but I have developed interest in CyberSecurity lately. I watched your first video which really provided me with the courage I was searching for a start. I really do enjoy it. The big deal is that am still getting confused on where to base. I really need your support.🙏
Comptia security and A+. ..get those...also networking
I really need a edge to start my dream in Cyber security
But sincerely I'm confused
Please can someone help me out...
All the languages and the things they do makes me confused
Please can someone tutor me??...
I'll be very grateful 🙏🙏
@@akeekuesimeon1060 It's harder to understand a concept when you don't have context to it. Try to relate the skills your learning to real life. Like how writing code for a website is like building a house. You need certain materials(Code) like cement, wood and concrete blocks and need to put them together in a certain way to make a sturdy house
Go with A+, N+, Security+, Linux Fundamentals (At the very least) and then CEH perhaps.
I’m so glad I came across your channel, because I was interested in cyber security but I don’t know where to start. Hopefully your channel helps me🙏🏾
same💯
The full phrase is “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”
Thank you. I'm going thru being fired from the best job I've ever had. And it was $7.25 an hour. I wholeheartedly appreciate this information and will try to make the best out of it.
Once you have the certifications and skills to back them up, how do you locate managed service providers to get started in the industry?
Thanx
Thanks for this video. Very helpful. Excuse me, do you have some free resources for those who want to learn Cybersecurity and doesn't work in any company yet. Also how do you specialize yourself in PCI DSS ?
Thanks
I’m soaking up all of his good knowledge.
About certs : Not really true. Some roles would favour someone with certain certs. This is a representation of skills. A CCNP would get the nod over someone who has been working as a SYS Admin for 3 years at their school or college / small business. Or someone with OSCP/OSCE/OSWE would be favoured over some one who has no certs.
So pretty much step 1 is just be super lucky. I agree start small but 99% of MSP's will not hire you off the street with zero experience. Also a 200K job is rare in cyber security without tons of experience. A lot of CISO's are only making 200K. Cyber Security is a great industry and we need more qualified people but don't think for a second it is not an absolute grind.
@@FriendlyNeighborhoodViking 4 year degree gets you a job in a soc for $60k
This is amazing...how can one reach you?
Boyd. Bro, would really appreciate you knowledge here, I’m British, live in China, want to stay here, (at least for a while) but I want to change my career to cybersecurity. China has enough of there own. But can I from within China (firewall and all that) work for western companies?
Hello Boyd, just wanted to put one point out there, i have a engineering degree in computer science, i have a ISO 27001LA certification, i am well versed in iso 31000, NIST, TPRA, SOC and GRC with experience of working on eGRC tool such as RSA Archer, guess how much iam being paid after two years of working in India's largest telecom company, 500$ a month, yes, so these salary also depends on the country you are working from....
Specialization is key!
As someone who works at an MSP with hundreds of different client businesses, this gave me the validation I need to know that I'm on the right track.
Would love to get into cybersecurity but can't justify taking a massive pay cut for the years of experience needed in a new field to get back upto what I am living off.
Can you start doing videos for UK audience please?
US market for IT is different compared to UK.
Kinda just ran across this kinda lost in my life and saw a ad about cybersecurity how many certificates would I need and which ones
A Nigerian here myself. Went to a GRC/ Cysa+ Booth camp and I am I just need a place to start. Need a little boost I guess to take me to the next level.
Cysa+ is good but not much applicable in GRC. Read books on CISSP, CISA, and learn some security frameworks applicable in your region.
What were the books that helped you get A+ certified?
Thanks for creating these videos, Boyd!
So... I'm at one of those more prominent companies. I rarely get ANY chance to do anything outside of my role-related responsibilities. This is the worst part of these fields... you can't get the job without the experience, but it's very difficult to get marketable experience without the job. It's Ye Olde World of Warcraft catch 22 -- can't get into the raid without the higher tier gear, can't get the higher tier gear without getting into the raid.
Any thoughts on how to land these jobs without that hands-on experience? Let me know your thoughts!
I mean. Certifications and labs. If not then just ask them if you can help them do some of the things, lighten their load. But I mean, personally i would leave the company and get another role with a little higher pay or lower if you get to do some other stuff.
Not speaking from experience since I’m just studying for the A+. But I do got an outsiders perspective and basic logic.
Also it’s probably because you’re in a big company that you can’t do much. If you’re in a smaller company you’re probably gonna have to do more work.
Thank you so much for your videos, I am glad I found you. Really want to land 6 figure job in cybersecurity
Spoke with Erik Scherer who was one of your representive on 11/28/2022 to enroll into Baxter Academy - was supposed to have a follow-up call @2pm PT on 12/1/2022 - he did not call. Anyone currently in the course? I’m interested in what domains are covered in the course. I have friend who holds a CISSP and I’ve learned from him that they are so many domains to cover from Network, risk identity, Governance, etc. is all covered?
You lie. I also work in Cyber Security and you do not walk into a $200k a year with PCI-DSS. $200 is close to CISO salaries. I am now pushing the $100k barrier and i have been here for 5 years working as a Penetration tester. GRC pays a lot less. Newbies wont be able to get a CISSP and be accredited as a CISSP by ISC unless they have 5 years security experience and are vouched for by another CISSP holder.
Truth is skills pay the bills. Stop the cap.
You can believe what you want. I’ve shared my offer letter and pay stubs with my clients. I have no reason to lie. You’re pushing $100k but my clients are doing $130k without experience so the joke is on you.
@@BoydClewis No the joke is on you for BS'ing. You never had a $200k salary. Neither did your clients. Most would end up in entry level or junior positions. Take for an example someone with OSCP, the most sought after cert in Infosec. That cert almost garauntees an entry level position, certainly not a $200k salary. That comes after considerable time.
You are not the only UA-camr with these claims, seems to be a trend yall are jumping on. Just be real.

Do you still not have a college degree?
No college degree necessary to be successful!
No degree is better to build wealth. Using on the job training. I see a nice renovated house on bus stops in Dallas for under 400k for 4 showers. Buy it with 3 other friends and just payoff ASAP. Without a degree and the right mentoring, can payoff in 2 years. This way can reach financial freedom faster and start helping our kids do this too with stay at home wife supporting this vision.

Your intro is rather misleading. You say “No certifications” yet you got your basic COMPTIA A+ certification when you first started. Everyone in IT knows that is your basic foundation in that career field. You can’t land a high paying salary without that certification. Your intro led me to believe that you can land a high paying job without ANY certifications.
200k a year is not easy to get as a practitioner but the path to that type of money does depend on what discipline you pursue. Fun fact though is to get started, persuing certification will help your resume get found on places like LinkedIn and others. Once your in the experience just builds but be prepared to always have to learn new things. Security threats change as new technology changes.
When I say certification though, I am not referring to Comptia+. It is one that people often pursue at first. IMO it is a waste of time, that cert is not respected and is near worthless. It is good for getting familiar with basic concepts but does not tell an employer you have certain skills or expertise.
What certs would you recommend then
Great info but Comptia Security+ is very important when working for the gov in cyber security. 🤗 I recommend getting Security+ out the way to expand your job options.
Excellent and useful information as always! Thanks, @BoydClewis
I may be breaking one of your statements while getting my certs for free. No offense
First, you can't say with "no" experience because obviously you got experience before you got into cyber. Second, it seems you got extremely lucky with a lot of this. Third, certification does equal job, it doesn't guarantee you a job you want but it gets you in the door. Fourth, certification does equal higher starting pay. clickbait is clickbait.
Ok so what kind of experience and certifications do you need to get into cybersecurity?
It would be lucky if I hadn’t helped 500 people do the same.
@@BoydClewis Thank you for replying. The ones who haven’t helped anyone get into tech, always have a lot to say smh
@@youtubecommenter1000 exactly. It’s easy to be bold behind a keyboard. It takes courage to start a company to increase diversity in cybersecurity.
I just started watching but isn’t this literally survivorship bias? You did great without any certificates but there are 10,100 maybe 1000 people who failed to get in because they didn’t have a degree or a certificate.
