Nice vid thanks. Also helps to use hdpe or nylon bushings after taking the blanks down to their correct diameter. Leave a little extra if you need to sand as well
Some nice pens there Ian.You certainly make a lovely job of them.I really must try and get round to making some--got everything I need, except for enough hours in the day at the moment! I see you haven't put the second floor in your workshop yet though! Downstairs for turning, upstairs for banjos!Take care my friend, Keith.
Really enjoying watching you work in your shed, very relaxing. And the rain, all adds to my hometown, perfect! My uncle is a cabinet maker, Dad likes making stuff in the shed. All the smells and noises remind me of my childhood. I like the way you talk things through methodically and the little show and tell at the end. Shame we couldn't see you pressing it all together, I'm wonder how you did the nib area. Also, what is ''CA'?
Thanks Julia. I appreciate the feedback. As for pen making, there are several video's in my collection showing more about the pens. The nib screws into a section after pressing, which makes it easy to change also. CA is Cyanoacrylate, or simply put... superglue! A million and one uses eh?
Pens look really nice Ian. Everytime I've tried to order from Taylors they have always been missing parts like spacers etc. so I've never ordered any from them and always gone back to Axminster. I'm still so tempted on a fountain pen, but they are quite expensive and also require a few other bits to be ordered. Not sure about a wax finish on a pen though. Long term it's going to wear out far quicker than CA (especially if used daily)which is why I stick to CA. Well done!
Hi Paul, It can be frustrating if parts are missing. I find Axminster silly on cost for pen parts personally. I have had very few problems with Taylor's Mirfield and when I have, a quick phone call has sorted it out. Another alternative for you is Timberbits in Australia. I know it sounds extreme but it works out really well.
Beautiful pens Ian, and a nice review on the products. Must get me a Martin stick !!! can't believe he didn't save me one a ukiws :(.... Cheers mate, Steve.
The swine! Haha, I'm sure there will be one on the way once you give him some earache ;) They were a good price at UKIWS though, there may be a surcharge now!
Great video Ian, you certainly make a lovely pen....well three in this case :) So glad that, like me, you never, ever make mistakes....lol Take care Mike
Those pens look lovely. Get yourself 'Silverline transfer punch set' on Ebay and you will be able to disassemble pens. I see the set as low as £10.78 with free postage. The one you want is the set in the blue stand with 28 pieces. I also got Locking Soft-Grip Pliers for Pen Dissembly' from The Turners Workshop, £15.99. They have a set of long, soft, plastic coated jaws to hold a pen barrel. The only pen barrel they don't hold well is a Slimline but some shop towel or tissue wrapped around the barrel sorts that problem out. I can't put in links or this will go to your Spam. If you need any more info let me know and I'll give you my email. Best Wishes, Brendan.
That is a really nice pen, man, those fancy pen kits sure are expensive :) Good call on using YoGrit. Do you think a CA finish will work as well on YoGrit base, or only wax based finish?? Also, I fully believe you when you say you never made that mistake before... ever.... really... Yuval.
Hi Yuval and thanks for the comment :) I have never tried putting CA on top of wax to be honest and of course, Yorkshire grit has wax in it. Maybe I should try that? Mistakes? Never ;)
Absolutely brilliant, many thanks. I am about to turn my first fountain pen and was undecided about the finish. Your video has made up my mind.

Ian, great video and fabulous pens. Shame about the weather. Take care. Dave
Thanks Dave. It was dry in the workshop :) Great to meet you at UKIWS and here's to next year!
Nice work with them pen's well finished 👍
Thankyou :)

Wow, it appeared finally :) Thanks for the comment Keith! Second floor is a nice though, although I may have to alter the foundations a bit ;)
I re-posted this comment,so don't know where the original one went! Still, all okay now :)
Beautiful pens Ian, they come out really nice, Great video as always, cheers Harry
Thanks Harry, I enjoyed making them. I see you have been doing a few too. I look forward to your next video when you get a chance :)

Lovely pens Ian, I forgot to get my Hampshire Sheen high gloss at UKIWS, I will have to order some. Cheers, Jim
Thanks Jim. The high gloss is lovely to use. I can certainly recommend it.
+Ian Maude . I ordered some of the high gloss and some more big bowl blanks off Ed Oliver this afternoon. Looking forward to trying it. Cheers, Jim
How big? Are you going to start doing Redwood tree inlay? :)
Not quite mate, 14 inch blanks, I've got some platters planned. Jim
Great video Ian, you certainly make a lovely pen....well three in this case :)

Thanks Mike. There will be a proper turning video coming up soon, if I can pluck up the courage ;)
are these pens for sale? I like the 3rd one you showed that was darker.
This video was some time ago and all the pens I had have been sold. I need to get around to making some more :)

Brilliant Brendan, thanks :) I knew you would know about disassembling pens! It would be a shame to waste the Yew one, it is so lovely!
I've had plenty of practice.
chuckle :)
