    Great video. I use to do that in elementary school. A Vietnam vet showed me how to do it and make napalm. I used coke bottles and only put enough Lye to cover the bottom about a half inch. Then put a few inches of water. Then roll the foil up kinda tight and drop it into the bottle with the regular size balloons we used for water balloon fights ready. We would then fill one balloon at a time being careful not to get burnt. As one of us tied the balloons he would also put a piece of toilet paper in the knot making a fuse. Now with the toilet paper fuses you can have them pretty long and the balloons will fly pretty high with the fuse lit at night the deep boom and fire ball is pretty cool. It was better than the fireworks because they were made by us and didn't cost much.

    I'd like to see something done with a car's power steering fluid, the fluid is extremely caustic and reactive, it corrodes everything and im sure there can be tons of reactions created from it. Like if you'd like to see something unique

    • @JedDamion
      @JedDamion 7 років тому

      Yeah, I think it would be a really cool experiment to try reacting materials with the fluid, you can see on the containers that store the fluid in the vehicle how reactive it is, it cracks the plastic and warps it to a degree. Then, all the metal around the container gets horribly corroded too. It'd be really neat to see the unique abilities of what power steering fluid can do.

    Please no hatred for my need for accuracy, but: Its not the density of the rubber pulling the balloon down after it cooled down; its because of the (then missing) heat itself.
    Also, calling it "HHO" isn't chemicaly correct at all. Its simply a mixture of 2 parts Hydrogen and 1 Part Oxygen. Then the reaction, the explosion, combines the 2 gasses to H2O - Water.
    But no offense though, not everybody need to be a chemist and you make awesome videos :) Greetings from Germany!

    • @ZomBeeNature
      @ZomBeeNature 7 років тому

      Ethan Koetsier I read a story, maybe true, maybe false, of someone tricking someone into doing a "free spa treatment" and they wrapped them in linseed oil soaked gauze from head to toe. It wasn't wrapped tightly, there was a lot of oxygen access. But there was so much the person was wrapped in they couldn't remove it. So it gradually heated up, they couldn't get out, and it cooked them and then caught on fire and incinerated them. Gruesome...

  • @TheDannyHamilton

    Perhaps instead of placing the balloon directly onto the hot jar, you could run a long hose from the jar into a cooler full of ice (or dry ice) with a coil of hose in the cooler, and then connect the balloon to the hose. This would condense the water before it gets into the balloon AND would prevent the hydrogen in the balloon from shrinking. Your balloon might float quite well, and an aerial explosion would be pretty cool.

    Perhaps you should try to fill just part of the baloon with H2, and the last part (1/3?) with O2 (or more than 1/3 air). By doing that you would provide the comburent needed for the reaction, probably obtaining a much louder explosion with less H2. I'm not sure you did that, if not, it might be worth trying.

    Hey grant thompson
    I think your theory must be slightly modified
    The steam actually is not allowing the hydrogen and oxygen gas to get sufficient affinity,hence chemical reaction is reduced exponentially.
    The steam is not "dissipating"any heat though.
    You make quality videos on youtube.keep it up.👍👍👍

      hydrogen will react with oxigen inside the ballon so luke has a point

    • @lukewal99
      @lukewal99 7 років тому +1

      but the equation has to be balanced meaning it cant react because then you will be left with H2O and O1 which can't happpen

    • @kylee.7654
      @kylee.7654 7 років тому +2

      The hydrogen will only react with the oxygen when a source of ignition is provided, like a sparkler. When this happens the hydrogen will react with the o2 in the balloon and the o2 in the air until it all has made water. If he started out with 1:1 h2 to o2 there will be extra o2 left that will just go into the air however, this will still create a larger/louder explosion which is what I would like to see!

    The Hindenburg was a giant hydrogen balloon.

    • @AngelLestat2
      @AngelLestat2 7 років тому +2

      it was not a balloon... balloon are under pressure.. is not even a blimp which it has just a bit more of pressure compare to the outside air, it was a rigid airship with almost equal pressure.
      The hindenburg would be still flying today if there was not by the flammable envelope..
      With a no flammable envelope there is no chance to burn or explote.. It can burn, but nothing would happen, it will reach its destiny no matter what.

    • @AngelLestat2
      @AngelLestat2 7 років тому +2

      I was very polite in my answer, and I wanted to answer (even if you knew the difference) because hydrogen is the element that it would save us from global warming. Airplanes, ships, trucks, utility vehicles and many other areas can not work with batteries or just electricity. Also.. there is no other cost efficient way to storage energy from renewables.
      There is a lot of bad propaganda and bad information about the hydrogen that keep us away to mass produce products to exploit their benefits.
      Hydrogen is just like any other fuel, in fact it is safer than other fuels when you know their characteristics.
      The whole "hindenburg or hydrogen balloon" thing, contributes to that ignorance.
      Sorry if you take it in the other way.. my regards.

    Just a suggestion, use electrolysis to generate your hydrogen instead of drain cleaner and aluminum. It will not get nearly as hot, and you will not have steam. In addition, if you set it up to generate oxygen and hydrogen in the same aria, you get mixed HHO which, as you said, is more explosive.
