    Peter Hollens not only has a phenomenal musical talent but a way of covering a wide range, whether by genre or subject in a fun and interesting way, therefore gaining and retaining interest.
    I know that Crypto Currency is a thing but have not really explored it (hey for ages I thought NFTs were a rival to a famous Southern fried chicken retailer 😀). I am sure I am not the only one (except perhaps the chicken thing). Thank you to Peter for starting this conversation in a fun way.

    Massive respect to you Peter, for being able, and more importantly willing to recognize that so many polarizing issues can have partial accuracies on both sides and that the correct answer is often, not always, but often somewhere in the middle; or at least that’s my interpretation of this, I would never seek to put words in your mouth. The most important thing about crypto is if you're getting into it, much like stocks there is one major rule. DO NOT PUT MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE INTO IT. That goes for mlms and stuff too though. Never gamble enough money to ruin yourself in anything that can take it away in a moment.
    I mean I wouldn't touch it, but I don't gamble.

And honestly if that's all you do with that money then when does any of it ever come back to you?

    I may not have understood hardly anything in this song, but it was a really great thing to do. You really managed to take a messy topic about something governmental and make it into something hilarious and fun to watch. It really shows that people can talk about heavy topics and make them fun, being raised by my grandparents I was always taught to keep my mouth shut about this kind of stuff so no problems got started. Just keep my head down and don't add what I think to the conversation, I still am partially afraid to speak openly due to all those years of being taught to fear topics like this. But when I get to see people make amusing stuff about it, it really makes me happy to know that people can be light hearted and good about these things as well as hateful and heavy. Thank you so much for doing this and giving me the joy that I desperately needed about topics like this.

    Been waiting for your take on Bruno, thanks! 🥰
    On crypto... it has no government safeguards. That's a major caution sign right there. On the other hand, the safeguards that exist to protect traditional investments don't really work for the little guy, they only protect the big players, so... So I default to my original stance of not chasing the quick buck. If it seems too good to be true, it often is. Slow and steady may be a boring way to invest, but you don't lose half your retirement when a billionaire sends out a corrosive tweet. 😵

    I'm geniunely curious. What bothers me is the fact that minting a single NFT using the proof-of-work method uses the same amount of electricity as an average American household over almost nine days. It's impact becomes bigger with each change of hands. In the future how can this be reduced? We need to do what we can to protect the earth, it's already hard enough when large companies won't change and they are responisble for a large percentage of this mess.

    I'd feel a lot better about a grey/middle of the road approach on crypto if it actually had any use tbh. But at the moment, it really is just a speculative asset/bubble that's scams on top of scams, or just fundamentally broken design for what it claims to be (eg, bitcoin).
    I'm happy you're branching out and trying new creative projects, and I hope you're enjoying it! For me though, this fell a bit flat/is disappointing because of the topic being one that really does deserve condemnation rather than middle of the road approach imo. But I'm sure you knew that with something like this there'd be people that disagreed with any approach you took!

Lots of mean know-it-alls on the pro side of things, and lots of moral high ground from the con side. Made it really tough to sort out fact from fiction. I just wanted to make a song that told the story of that experience as a way of encouraging people to actually listen to each other. That's how progress is made. Yeah, I see 2 sides of blockchain technology. There's the legitimately cool and potentially useful blockchain tech, and there's the get rich quick fad stuff like NFTs. I couldn't care less about NFTs. There may be a legitimate use for them some day, but that legitimate use doesn't currently exist.
      The underlying technology of blockchain, though, can be super useful though. In particular I find that it would be most useful for authentication and authorization stuff. It could enable things like secure, fully online voting. Unfortunately because there's currently tons of money in sketchy stuff like NFTs that's where the development currently is. Eventually I hope we see development for more useful things.

There's a ton being built under the hood and calling it broken or a scam is unfair and well obviously extremely early. ofcourse it's broken. How does one expect it to be fully functioning while it's only been around as an asset for a decade and as an industry (web3) for 3-4 years.

      I'm glad you're open to learning more and coming to your own conclusions. I recommend you start by looking up and understanding a little more about what a blockchain is. The fundamental concept solves problems that don't fully exist yet, in my opinion, which is why it's so difficult to help people understand what it's for. Basically, in a world where we can connect and even form private virtual communities like little countries, a blockchain forms one way to have ledger that is open and unchangeable with people's currency, owned assets, etc. It doesn't make sense for the current internet as much since supply is technically infinite for digital goods, but it makes sense for creating something similar to the real world with limited supplies and scarcity creating real or perceived value. There's still a lot I'm learning, but my company works in this now, so I've been trying to educate myself more on the matter as well.

    A while back I heard someone describe crypto and NFTs as "a solution in search of a problem." While there is obviously more nuance to the matter than that, I think it's also not an entirely inaccurate description. I've seen people propose that blockchain technology could be the used as the foundation for a genuinely secure way to handle online voting for elections, which would be really cool.
    That being said, I don't think crypto currencies and NFTs are a good use of this tech. In the case of cryptocurrencies, I understand the desire to store your savings in a form that isn't tied to the economic state of any given country, but the problem is, crypto does that by tying it to an even more volatile system that's shown to be even more prone to collapse. The more I've learned about the way these systems work, the more they seem to be designed as a way to generate large profits for the people who start them, at the expense of everybody else involved.
    As for NFTs, I've talked to people about them before, and never gotten a clear answer about what value they are providing that couldn't be handled without using this tech. You can buy a receipt saying that you own an image, cool, but what makes that valuable, when anybody else could create an identical copy of that image at any time with next to no effort? In the case of games using NFTs for their DLC or in-game purchases, having the digital items be NFTs doesn't really matter when you lose them as soon as the game stops getting support just like any other in-game item. I'm sure that there are uses for this tech, I just haven't seen any that seem worthwhile.

    • @peterlewis2178
      @peterlewis2178 2 роки тому

      From what I understand, NFTs are a way of actually owning something digital. Similar to how you could pull up a picture of "Starry night" by Vincent van Gogh on your phone, but that wouldn't be the same as actually owning the original. And with digital products, having the NFT also means that you have the rights to it, and often comes with other exclusive perks that others don't have, like exclusive membership in places, or the ability to converse with the artist. I could also see NFTs becoming much more substantial as VR expands, because those NFTs could have a pseudo-physical element, especially if some sort of metaverse is established.
      Personally, though, I really hope the potential is used for things like copyright. It would be incredibly helpful if artists' work could be better protected, so that some person can't just go and steal their work and claim it as their own (something that happens a lot in some places). Like, they could steal it and try to claim they made it, but if you have an NFT/blockchain copyright proving that you created it (and before them), then you would have the credibility.

    • @hiygamer
      @hiygamer 2 роки тому

      @@peterlewis2178 Unfortunately, I've actually seen a lot of artists complaining that people are using NFTs to steal their work. People download an image of an artist's work, turn it into an NFT, and then sell it for profit.

    • @peterlewis2178
      @peterlewis2178 2 роки тому

      @@hiygamer Yeah, that is a real problem, but I think mostly because of the nascence of the industry, and the fact that the original artists likely didn't have an NFT for their work to begin with. But I do think that has a lot of potential to evolve to a point where you just naturally create an NFT of sorts, a sort of proof of creation, whenever you make a work of digital art. And that, I think, probably coupled with a degree of regulation to sort out the scammers, could really help to protect artists.

    • @hiygamer
      @hiygamer 2 роки тому +1

      @@peterlewis2178 The problem is, even if they create one themselves, there's nothing stopping someone else from also making an NFT of that same work and selling it too. I think one of the big changes we would need to see for NFTs to catch on in a big way is some improved systems put in place to prevent people from making NFTs of things that infringe on someone else's copyright.

    • @peterlewis2178
      @peterlewis2178 2 роки тому

      @@hiygamer Yeah, but, like you said, some kind of check to see if it's an infringement could work. But it could also work based off of when the NFT was created. For example, if someone made an NFT for stolen work, the original artist could potentially get them to take it down by showing that their NFT predates the copy one. Granted, I don't know a ton about the industry, but it really is just at it's start. There are boundless ways that it could be used, and it very likely will be used in many of them.

    Love how you look at both sides and not favor only one. Great example of real journalism and trying to find a middle ground. Personally have no opinion on either side and until there's more info around me, I don't want to make any rash choices. Barely making it on my own right now anyway.
    Anyway, can you do some songs from Belle? 'Gale of Song', 'A million miles away', and 'Lend me your voice' are taking over my mind and I'd love to hear your takes on them.

    First off, was not expecting a remix of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" to be made about Crypto. Really well done and catchy I have to say.
    Second, absolutely amazing job in giving your stance on Crypto and actually trying to not say what's right or wrong or whatever, but just give a stance of understanding and interacting to make things better, find the "happy medium" cause everyone's very much All Left or All Right.
    I've honestly been nervous/diswayed about Crypto. Anytime I've tried to do research, never found anything "concrete" on it's pro's/con's. It's "digital money" made into real money, not something physical now made physical, and why does it have to be "burning down the rainforest" if it's not real money. It just gets my brain confused on everything. But just goes to show that I gotta open my mind, research harder and find my answers

    I particularly hate NFTs. Art websites like DeviantArt are getting skimmed by bots and countless works of art have been stolen and sold as NFTs and the artists have an exceedingly difficult time of getting the NFT platforms to get their work removed. NFTs are extremely rife with abuse. And since the platforms get a sales percentage of the sale, they make money through illegal means. The rightful artists NEVER see a penny of the money made off their stolen work. And they keep having to keep on their toes and keep searching for their work, because their work can pop up again under another illegal listing. I keep seeing the situation compared to Whack-A-Mole.
    And NFTs started out with the idea to give artists more control over their work. But the exact opposite happened.

    I think nft's are really cool for what they could be as opposed ot what they are let me give an example what if your nft was a videogame like a copy of Driver: San Francisco a videogame that can not be purchased right now because it had been said so currently the only way to buy this game is to buy a code for it from someone who already has one and once that code is used that is one less copy that can exist, even if there should be an infinite amount with an nft being the actual game not only could you play the game but you could then sell it or give it to someone else like when people use to trade discs around if you decide you don't want the game anymore plus by owning the game in this way this make it so the copy can even be traded rare items or advancements and you could have games with incredibly hard achievements only completed by a large amount of players working together it could be really cool once people stop trying to turn nft's into cash grabs they could become really cool and this is only one potential of their usage.

    I really believe Crypto could work. But it's hard because of the amount of resources that are required. I'm not in support of it right now due to its impact on the environment right now. But if it were too become 100% environmentally friendly and actually used for the original purpose. And make legit block chains with no schemes behind the scenes. Then perhaps I'd change my mind.
    This is a great song either way!! Really good "debate" into a song.

    man what a fun song, wasn't expecting that. 🤣
    my friends and I were chatting about this awhile ago, I think the jest of it was: it have potential, but right now it filled with so many bad players.
    I know one of the selling point ctytobros highlight is it's unregulated by government, but for that same reason with underdeveloped security people get their digital wallets hacked and lost everything and there's crap all that can be done about it. there's no enforced law to refund those people's lost money due to the weak security. there's many cases of people's wallets getting hacked and their NFTs getting stolen, and all they can do it cry out onto the internet hoping the hacker see their post and sells the NFT back to them.
    I understand the desire for digital ownership, a lot of stuff exist on the internet now so having a way to keep and fully own things will of course eventually come and be needed.
    but don't get me started on NFTs as they are now, as a artist myself the whole concept of them will forever be sour. it's filled with theft of living AND DECEASED artists alike, it filled with pure disrespect for artists, and seemingly the only way to keep control of one's art is to simply be the one to make them first?? 😡

    This is a textured issued. On one hand, a fully digital currency could mean less chance of fraudulent purchases via scammers since they could track every step of the purchase. But that means you would have no privacy concerning your personal life, since they would know what you buy, and when.
    It's just another facet of the ongoing debate over what's more important: security or freedom.

    I'm gonna, as usual, commend you for being able to inject topics into songs in a way that seems so natural and effortless, which I know it wasn't. I loved it when you did it with covid and I think it WOULD be fun to see more videos like this. That said, I just can't get behind this one, because crypto is "beautiful" in theory (which is what most of the pro arguments are about) but in practice it's not just environmentally capital U "Unfriendly" as well as way too speculative and, in the case of NFTs, downright scammy. Most of the "good" arguments fall apart when you actually look at how this thing is ran. So really, whatever pros it may have, they most definitely don't surpass the multitude of cons, and I simply cannot enjoy (or support) a video that talks about such a middle of the road, both sides have points approach like one. I literally can't.

    • @PeterHollens

      Hey Annie! Thanks for stopping by and offering your perspective - I really appreciate it 😊 When I tried learning about all this stuff, I felt like how the middle guy feels. I just kinda waltzed into a shouting match between two very opposing factions of people, and there was so much divisiveness it was really hard to separate fact from fiction and find the humanity in it. I wanted to make this video about how that felt for me, so that's what we have here. You of course don't have to support this video OR crypto, but I hope that makes sense as to why I did this. Thank you for the kind words!! I'll make more parodies in the future for sure ❤️
