Man this video saved me, i was having the exact problem as shown in your video...breaker not tripped and no electricity in 2 bedroom and only half of the third...i searched for hours looking for a video with my exact problem then i found yours and boom $1.67 later and i had it fixed...thanks for posting..
i’m an apprentice electrician and one of my outlets in my house haven’t been working since i moved there 2 years ago . i decided to take a look and fix it since i’m confident i could do something so ‘simple’. did a continuity test and my neutrals beeped to another outlet and my lights. however my hot wouldn’t beep to any of the outlets or lights. keep in mind the 3rd outlet in the room is connected to a completely seperate breaker than the others. i checked all splices and connections and even replaced my outlets and still nothing. It’s a head scratcher, but still looking for the disconnect and i won’t give up until i do!
Lex, this is a prime example of why most electricians prefer to pigtail each receptacle that feeds another device. Had that receptacle been pigtailed in the box, ONLY that one receptacle would have been affected by that burned wire, every other device would have still had current unless the burned wire was at the wire nut at the pigtail in the outlet box. It's also MUCH easier to find problems when a circuit is pigtailed in each box instead of "pass thru" wired by using all 4 screws on each receptacle.
to find an open neutral, turn all breakers and main off(safety/meter/tool saver), then use continuity meter/beeper and go from ground to neutral on all the problem the outlets(switch box/device) until you find the last outlet or switch box with continuity from neutral to ground(through the bond at panel). it's often at that location where the loose wire is, if not it will be the next one down. use a long wire and you can test from outlet to outlet across the room until you find the open also (this method for an open hot too) or you can use a tone generator and the amplifier probe, everything at or past the problem spot will be screaming loudly.
Great video! I literally know next to nothing about electricity and just using the logic in this video was able to easily find and fix almost the same problem myself. Was just about to call an electrician too.. close call. Thanks Lex!!!
Came here to say the same thing! Awesome video. This problem was driving me crazy. Would have never checked working outlets had it not been for your explanation.
Hey bro, your video and explanation on what could cause no power in one outlet and power in the other one. I followed your theory and went to the bathroom in my case because that was the closest to the room, fair enough the neutral line in the first outlet was out completely. Like you said at the end of the video, that was an easy fix but with advise from an expert. Thx bro
Good to have your channel this will help me to start anew on being a maintenance technician, start to gain knowledge, thanks for your contents, hope to see more of your videos
Nice find Skid 💪 That's the same way I go about troubleshooting my electrical issues. It's always nice finding the problem fairly quick, whenever you got something that takes an hour or more there's 50 other things that need done. Keep the videos coming 👍 Happy Friday!!!!
Awesome video, had this issue not to long ago and had to take off all plugs and outlets and found it also. Wish I would’ve seen this video would’ve saved me a lot of time lol.
Thank you for the video. I learned from the video. My house had similar problem. I would have no idea if I didn't watch this video. One of my room totally has no electricity (both light, fan and outlet). One of outlet of the next room and one outlet in the living room and two outlet in the basement have no electricity. The breakers are on and GFCI is on. I opened the outlets without electricity one by one. Finally, when I opened the 5th outlet, I found the problem. The outlet is loose and melted. So I turned off the electricity and replaced the outlet. When turned the electricity back on, all the problems are solved. Outlet, light and fans are working fine!
Hey Lex, What if only one outlet is failing? There are no other electrical issues found in this home. The outlet failing is a ground fault outlet and has not tripped. The black wire is hot at 70VAC. The same reading of 70VAC is shown if I measure between the black and white (neutral) wire when the outlet is removed. This is a single phase 120v 60Hz residential outlet.
@@LexVance Thank you for a quick reply. I have tried two more. Remember, measuring the Hot and Neutral wire when separated from the outlet reads 70VAC.
@@DodgeNbullits Not really. Just take a blow dryer and plug it in to outlets. If the outlet don't work, then it's tied into the bad circuit. If the outlet works, then keep moving.
I do maintenance for a 520 room hotel, and actually had a loose neutral few weeks ago. Receptacle wasn't working, but breaker was not tripped. Plugged in my Klein receptacle tester and it showed no neutral. Sure enough, neutral was loose and burned off the receptacle. But since all the outlets are pigtailed to the receptacles instead of the wiring being fed THRU each receptacle to the next one, if one burn up it doesn't affect any other outlets. Now I see why so many electricians prefer to use pigtails vs both sets of screws on the receptacle.
If you wired the receptacles using pigtails and wire nuts you would have only one hot wire, one neutral wire, and one ground wire connected to each receptacle. Then only the receptacle with the loose wire will be affected. That is the preferred method and is safer.
as taught in the mid 90's we always spliced all wiring and left pigtails just for the outlet/switch/devices. that way no current ever passed through outlets/devices to downstream and for that exact reason, of course you cannot limp wrist the wire nuts on and make a good connection, so eat your wheaties :)) I always hated splicing days, even with the wing-nuts caps and driver tool for cordless drill, that was a ton of work stripping all the wire/jacket and splicing out. yuck
Useful video, I have issue in one room where room has two out lets, one out let does not have any power and other one is kind of unusual, if I insert any plug which connect to any device, in the out let, room light works but if there is no plug/device; then room light does not work, any idea what is the issue or causing this? thank you
Turn the power off and pull the outlets out. Then, make sure the wires are tight around the outlet screws. Other than that, I'd need to be there for this head scratcher 🤔.

I have an issue going on I think it’s the same problem you fixed and this video to rooms are not getting any power and the breaker is not tripped I tried turning off the breaker off and on to see if it was in power back on in the room but nothing I’m going to see if I can try What you did
@@LexVance I think I found the issue one of the outlets when I plug something in and shake it in the outlet it comes on and off and when it does that to that one outlet it turns on and off all the outlets in the two rooms
What is the issue if on the same breaker one half of house works great and on same breaker on other side of house lights are dimmed when working most of time not working though
I ain’t no electrician but I’m very positive ik which outlet is broken and not connecting the power through the other outlets can I shut my breaker off and take the outlet out and check it and replace it do you suggest I hire someone

I have the same problem except none of the outlets in the circuit have power going to them. All hot wires are dead. Breaker reads 124 bolts at the box. No gfis or junction boxes that I could find. Maybe burned up the hot wire in between the breaker and the first outlet in the chain?
@LexVance and what if it's too short to reach the terminal after cutting it back to fresh copper? From what I'm trying to research, that's when the pigtailing comes in? I'm trying to find videos on that
But what caused the neutral to burn? That is the real question, if a bad breaker it could come back, but maybe that outlet was overloaded or caught a surge. I am curious as to the cause.
Should the wires always have power through them if the power isnt switches off? Im trying to fix my lights and all the outlets are fine but i got a power tester thing and none have power running to them so im worried its not an outlet problem and ill have to pay a lot to have someone come out and fix it

I have an issue of my master bedroom outlet no electrical out the light and fan are on working fine. I went to my circuit breaker check is on and all GFCI are on too. All other bedroom outlets are working. Except the master bedroom outlet. So what is the solution to fix this issue Sir?

I have power going out to half the living room and one bedroom. If I plug in something to the closest working outlet the power comes back on. Is what happened in this video the same problem? 2-11-24
Right on. When I tested the outlets for power, they had power and were live and hot. That's why the guy working on it before was confused. When he plugged something into the outlet that had power, it wouldn't turn on. Thank you so much for watching Tim!
I think I’m having the same issue in my home but we’ve switched out the outlets and even replaced a fuse but still no power along one wall in bedroom and the livingroom along with one of the rooms in the basement which we did find one burnt outlet in the basement but still no power. Any help?
Make sure all GFCI outlets are reset. They have a reset button on them. They're usually around water sources so in bathrooms, kitchens and even outside on porches. If they're good, you'll need to find a loose wire on an outlet. Tedious job for sure. I hope everything works out for you mee chang!
Technically, those devices (NEC defined) are “receptacles” not an outlet. The assembly of box conductors and device(receptacle) is a receptacle outlet. There are also light outlets and smoke detector outlets.
That's why I never install outlets like that. I always use wire nuts and do a pigtail to the outlet. That way the outlets downstream are not dependent on a device.
@@LexVance after a lot of researching I believe it has to be loose neutral. All of my house except the back 2 rooms have power and those rooms are completely blacked out all outlets and ceiling lights. Going to wait till the morning to get a better look at the breaker. Oddly my breaker only has 4 switches and they all are connected by a trip plastic cover. It is a slightly older house so there’s a chance it’s going bad but just interest how only the bedrooms on the back end of the house are affected even the bathrooms on the back next to them are fine. I also reset the gfci’s on 2 outlets inside and nothing
It's been 10 years since I've done EXIT signs and I need to brush up on the routine. I found out it was the wrong style sign that was given to me by the manager. So, I took the video down. The pigtail method is a double edged sword if one of your outlets gets buried by the drywall contractor you might not even realize it and then have the danger of live wires in your wall

Everything has a circuit board in it now days. Probably just needed a reset. 😆 That's all I got on that head scratcher you've got there. Thank you so much for watching the Nicholas!
You found the symptom, but you didn't find the root cause...what caused the outlet to burn? Off the top of my head, I would say a loose connection creating high resistance and heating up, but you didn't say in the video if it appeared loose, only that it was burnt.

Looking forward to more vids love watching them
Right on! I'll have one up on Friday. Thank you so much for watching bigbroaddus!
Great video thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for watching Tito!
I'm chasing a mess seem outlet works then it goes off like the breaker tripped but it didn't so if I unplug it and plug it back in it works.
Make sure all outlet and switch wires are tight and that there's no burn marks on any of them.
@@LexVance will do I wa s using a window ac going to check wires and switches
@@LexVance if.there burnt then I guess it's time to call someone in
This happens occasionally at my work and sometimes a machine power cord won’t plug in or difficulty pulling it out.
Thank you so much for watching Alex!
Did you cut the burnt wires or did you just put them on a new outlet 😅
Cut and sand. Thank you so much for watching!
smart thinking, dang.i would have called an electrician!
It can be a head smasher. 🤣Thank you so much for watching Doozer!
So junctions feed the next junction from left to right in a room always?? Or no?
Not always. Depends on the layout. Thank you so much for watching Andy!
Great video Thanks
You're welcome Andres! Thank you so much for watching!
Can an outlet upstream from a gfci cause this?
Yes it can. Thank you so much for watching Hypnotize!
Can a bad light switch be an issue that the whole room doesn’t receive power?
Yes if the outlets are tied in along with the switch.
Great video
Thank you so much for watching Ej!
Lex Vance, Vance Refrigeration. I thought for SURE you were going to end the video with plugging the test light into the 2nd BR outlets! 😮
Right on Sam! Thank you so much for watching!
Technically, those devices (NEC defined) are “receptacles” not an outlet. The assembly of box conductors and device(receptacle) is a receptacle outlet. There are also light outlets and smoke detector outlets.
Right on Kevin! Thank you so much for watching!
Very familiar sight in my neck of the woods LOL
😆 good to hear from you dembone!
How much is the charge for this fix, any idea?
$100 an hour for the time and around $30 for materials. So, around $130.
@@LexVance Great, gracias!
That's why I never install outlets like that. I always use wire nuts and do a pigtail to the outlet. That way the outlets downstream are not dependent on a device.
Thank you so much for watching!
but what if its not just the outlets i have only my two back rooms without power even the ceiling lights....
Loose neutral on breaker or a bad breaker. I'd need to be there for this head scratcher 🤔.
What happened to your last video? You changed an exit sign what happened that was a very educational video. At least to me it was 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
It's been 10 years since I've done EXIT signs and I need to brush up on the routine. I found out it was the wrong style sign that was given to me by the manager. So, I took the video down. The sign needed stair lights pointing down on the stairs and the one I hung didn't have them. Now I know! I don't want mis-information out there so I pulled the video.
👍😎👍 Good to hear from you David!

You're welcome Marcos! Thank you so much for watching!
Skidster what it do? U put out any new music lately?
No, no new music. I retired from the music biz 6 years ago. Too expensive and time consuming. I just enjoy jamming for fun to my favorite albums in the bedroom now days. Thank you so much for watching Nicholas!
Great vid! Thanks :)
You're welcome Yesteryear! Thank you so much for watching!
Why not get a hot stick to find out which outlet does or does not have power?
I was using the hot stick and they had power coming to them but the loose neutral wasn't completing the circuit. So, it would beep but the outlet wouldn't work. That's why I went with a plug in light. Thank you so much for watching Wolf!
@@LexVance well as you can tell I'm an idiot lol
@@LexVance what advice do you have for an entry level tech that wants to learn the more advanced stuff like HVAC, electrical and plumbing? My job doesn't do alot of the stuff you show here its all contracted out so I don't even have the chance to practice it. Are the books ect that you recommend?
Cool thx
Thank you so much for watching!
The pigtail method is a double edged sword if one of your outlets gets buried by the drywall contractor you might not even realize it and then have the danger of live wires in your wall
So true. Thank you so much for watching Jeff!
Hey Skid quick question my dishwasher has not been working then all of a sudden we had a quick power outage and then it starts working again...any ideas what it can be...this is the 2nd time it has happened...
Yep loose wire. Thank you so much for watching shepherd!
helluva job
Thank you so much for watching Model Jet!
hell ya bro thanks
You're welcome Joe! Thank you so much for watching!
I love when people fail to hand torque the screws at the last step, causes it to arc and burn up
😆 Yep. That's definitely a call back. Thank you so much for watching David!
