People who like UA-cam Shorts are literally downright bad, like how are you supposed to live like this? It’s so bad for you and people spend like 140 videos on them and stay up until 4AM, all people do is post useless or potentially inappropriate shorts that get stuck in your head and distract you and pull your grades in your down…
It’s silly but I almost feel bitterness and resentment towards TikTok for creating this standard of short form content. I should be able to have the willpower not to doomscroll but it is just so psychologically addictive somehow, it feels sinister. And it’s not even anyones fault but I literally feel the harm it does and I can only imagine what it’s doing to young kids. I can only hope it doesn’t get worse.
the damn loops are what kill me. Short form content is fine when I decide to opt into it. Otherwise you get baited into clicking on one and often I'll catch myself just rewatching the same damn video loop a couple times, almost hypnotized. The amount of time literally wasted away on shit like that is slowly killing us. I don't mind them making it if they want but allow us to opt out of it. I don't even care if they at least made it a Premium thing, I already pay for Premium.
I don't know if you've seen the JRE clip titled "how casinos keep you {addicted? Hooked?}"
But the guest of the show said there are 3 main criteria for the "psychological gambling loop":
1) Theres a reward possibility
2) Its easily repeatable
3) The reward is randomized
So for instance, for a solt machine:
1) obviously the chace for money
2) all you do is pull a lever
3)"I may have lost on this spin...BUT THE NEXT..."
And, though, this wasnt talked about in the clip. Its clear to me the "short" formula meets these requirements (when paired with an AI.)
1) there's a reward:
for shorts its an emoitional reward. You can call it dopamine if you'd like. But its more...
There's always the chance to laugh, cry, get angry, be in awe, inspired, motivated, scared, get your adrenaline spiked, whatever.
Point is, whatever you watch, youre gonna going get some emotional reward. In a matter of minutes you can experience more (intense) emotion IN SHORT SPURTS than you would a full day without.
2)its easily repeatable:
One thing -- SHORTS
3) the reward is randomized:
You never know which emotion you're gonna get. But whatever it is, its going to feel good (even angry or sad feels good without the consequences).
But you just don't know when. I mean, its not like you watch every short. Hence: doom scrolling.
Eventually the AI/Algorithm will react to you and your actions. Finding the "rhythm of content" that you are engaging with the most. Honeing on the loop that will keep your watch time up.
At least, that's my opinion. Shorts is just gambling with your emotions.
No wonder its so addictive.

In games you at least feel proud to something that you done in game that you worked hard for. While short gave you nothing but depression for scrolling and wasting your time for 6 hour non stop *but somehow still can't stop watching it*

There is, It's called unhooked. (google extension). I use brave browser to remove youtube adds in combination with unhooked extension on my pc and kivi browser on my mobile with ublock plus unhooked extension.

This feels like a complicated and unintentional fix that UA-cam put in there by accident. There really should be an option to just disable UA-cam shorts right in the settings tab.

Something that is a huge benefit to disabling this other than preventing addictive scrolling is that it will also GREATLY improve the recommended videos on the home page. I have no idea why, but ever since UA-cam added shorts, the recommended tab is a nightmare.
I exclusively watch some of the most predictable vanilla content (video essays, smosh, rdpr content, commentary channels, etc), but once I started watching shorts it destroyed my recommended feed and made the app unusable. I started getting recommended extremist political content, sexual spam, Andrew Tate clips, videos made by children that should not be anywhere within reach of adults, 4 hour livestreams with 30 views and a nonsensical title, 4 second clips, nothing but complete garbage over and over.
It didn’t matter how many times I marked either a short or a video as “not interested” or “don’t recommend channel”, I would get recommended some of the most bizarre shit I’ve ever seen. As soon as I removed shorts, without even tapping a single video my recommended feed looked normal again.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way I used too be a simple guy liked watching casting videos them guys that build primitive houses, Colin furze,some lifting content ever since the (short apocalypse) it's gone to completely red pill and degeneracy its like they like to put the extreme opposites in are face for no reason where where just normal people completely brainwashs you I'm glad today's the day I can go back to being simple 😂😂

on iphone, there's no "general" under Settings. In settings, the option is Playback and Performance and NONE of those settings you show are available on my iphone.

I've been thinking about ways to do this for a long time now. I just did this yesterday and for the past few hours, whenever I open UA-cam I'm getting recommendations of amazing long-ish videos. Just like old UA-cam had!!
It's like the "shorts" were overpowering or hiding the actual, beautiful content that I was meant to consume.

Thank you! Hopefully I can ignore the tab but the fact that it is not in my feed anymore is a beginning. It still baffles me how accepted it is. Nearly everything that makes people addicted is regulated or even banned but short video content that openly admits to be totally addicting and harms the mental health from a lot of people doesn't get criticized at all? I don't want a ban of it, just because I don't have any self Control other shouldn't have to miss it but come one not even any opt out option? Since reels, shorts and so on my depression skyrocketed again because it's perfect to ignore the real world and yay dopamine but when you have a freakin hard time to chase dopamine over the healthy but time consuming ways of course you chose the easy way and waste your life with nonsense shorts etc. Wish there would be a movement for more regularities on this topic

I had ZERO hopes from this 10 months old video to work cos I thought YT must have fixed it. But to my surprise it does work. In fact, it did work. People who are still stuck on shorts don't realise what is it gonna cost them. Shorts is way too addictive and hypnotic. Stay aware.

Hey so, this is a good option but I found a literal cheat in the system to not deal with shorts, even if you click the short button below- all you have to do is literally turn off your save history and boom, it literally cant show you any it’s amazing, downside is you can’t see recommendations on the for you page at all and the videos you watch won’t save, but you can see the videos of who you’re subscribed to and save videos by putting them in playlists, I'm gonna copy and paste this to let everyone know-

i already uninstalled ig, fb, and even took a pause from reddit. youtube is the only vice i allow myself because there are many things i learn from watching regular videos but the shorts were essentially exploiting the same behavior i was trying to avoid. this is what i was needing. thanks.

This works… thank you so much!!! I miss using youtube as I wanted it, now I just get sucked into shorts and can never remember when I actually clicked on it to start with. This short form scroll content is dissatisfying and time wasting. I dislike tiktok for the same reason. They should have a button intended to remove shorts from your app entirely, it’s depressing that no matter what social media I use, there’s an option to get sucked into that same format. Hard to escape

Thank you thankyou thankyou! Every time it was just “one more” and I couldn’t stop even after an hour. So incredibly addictive and wanted to stop. This still works today, but you have to scroll down a few times as there are 3 or 4 shorts sections now.

You might have to repeat the last step a couple times (on phone at least) since shorts are also recommended down the video you just watched or in your history, but it works wonders. Thank you!
