I be hearing , “WHAT UP DERPS”
The Kendrick Lamar retrospective experience is just "What the hell is Money Trees?... oh I love that one. What the hell is Swimming Pools?... oh I love that one. Have I been a Kendrick fan this whole time?"
Rinse and repeat about 12 times until you look up and suddenly you're in the TPAB album art like it's the final shot of The Shining.
Kendrick was writing this album like he was already living in 2025
It’s ahead of its time fr
Definition of timeless
"good kid" is so underrated and is legitimately some of Kendrick's best writing and rapping he's ever done. The rhyme scheme, the subject matter, the wordplay, imagery. 10/10 song, I love it so much
Insane how underrated that song is, the juxtaposition of the three verses and how vividly they paint that picture, definitely some of his best writing

Seams like the whole channel is against him
One of my favorite parts is the end of swimming pools where he basically describes being in the backseat of the car and leaning out of the window and puking from being so intoxicated then he looks back at his friends laughing at him and he’s thinking what’s so funny I’m gonna diiiie!!
“Im locked in” needs to be added to the original track on all streaming platforms
The way the beat on Good Kid rides out always gives me chills.
swimming pools was the first kendrick track i heard. didn't even know it was him at the time. also good kid is so underrated
The first song I heard was Bitch don’t kill my vibe and my brother was playing it in the car.
Good kid is so underappreciated. The first verse is some of his best writing. Dude said "choir" "require" and "acquire" and made that shit fit effortlessly in 2 bars.
Also the first and second bridges mirror each other perfectly. K Dot is a beast.
GKMC feels like a story about things that happened TO Kendrick, but that final verse of maad city is him asking if we’d feel differently about him if he was a participant in the violence, not just a bystander. Fucking brilliant perspective shift
I'm locked in for Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thirst that's coming.
Not to make this too serious, but man I appreciate this channel so much, especially with currently ongoing orange man shenanigans. Ngl, I’m doomerpilled af right now and this is one of the few outlets I got right now to just laugh or enjoy something.

@Derapy, when are you gonna do mortal men off of TPAB?
"Okay, Now Open Ya Mind Up And Listen Me, Derrick" 😤
It is impossible for me to not scream YAH YAH YAH YAH. Every single time that song comes on man
I think the first verse of M.a.a.D. City is the first hip-hop verse i ever fully committed to memory. It's like one of the few verses I can quote verbatim on command. What a masterpiece of a song.
All of these tracks are amazing, but Swimming Pools just hits me so hard every time, got me holdin back tears in the club 😭😭
Edit for context: I watched my ex nearly lose his battle with alcoholism a few times during our short relationship, and I always think of him when I hear this track…I hope the dude’s found peace and good health since 🤞
I literally have the screams from the beginning of maad city as my alarm works every time lmao
😂
Good kid could quite possibly be the song I listen to the most from this project. Such an underrated bop. He sliddddd and I never noticed he didn’t cuss!
I was like 30 when I got introduced to Kendrick Lamar by a 16 years old... It was this album. Now that 16 years old kid is in his late 20s saying "I told you Kendrick is the one!". Kendrick been rated!! 💯🔥

The rapping on Good Kid man underrated for me🔥🔥 "It was like a head on collision that folded me standing still" that line cold as hell to me
swimming pools has to be one of my favorite kendrick songs. it feels like it captures the allure but danger of alcoholism/drinking culture so well. shoutout especially to how he pronounces dive so it sounds like. die. (and of course it ties in well to the extended bit where he questoins why his friends are laughing at him throwing up, don't they know he could fall asleep and never wake up). i esp like lines like "this is parental advised" - despite things like violence and sex being seen as not kid friendly, alcoholism is often modeled for children by their parents from a young age. it's parental advised. and it's a pool that you die in.
idk for me it's at least a 9, it's a good song to drink to but when listening to the lyrics and knowing what's about ot happen in the skit, it feels foreboding in a way i really like.
24:00 very interesting take. Lol. I love “Swimming Pools.” I was stunned to learn that so many people didn’t realize that it is an Anti-Alcoholism anthem. Lol. He said he grew up around a family that was drinking so much that there was so much alcohol around, enough to fill a swimming pool it seemed. Very mellow and relaxing vibes. I think it’s more iconic than “Money Tree’s” because it was a hit single with a music video. Money Trees is very popular among people who are familiar with the GKMC album. “Swimming pools” was played on the radio and you heard it whether you got the album or not.
"I got ate alive yesterday" sends chills down my spine every time
Very few moments in songs give me chills, but that beat switch at the end of mAAd city gives me chills every time
Oh I'm timely with the YAWK YAWK YAWK YAWK!
Excellent
I love how swimming pools was my first ever time hearing Kendrick and I didn’t realize that until this video.
Maad City is one of my favorite Kendrick songs to this day. I also love the end, the music moving from left to right and back is my favorite music effects. And Swimming Pools is such a good song that I remember the exact car, and where I was going when I heard it when I was 9 years old
Good kid, maad city are absolutely incredible back to back tracks. Emotional and give you an idea of the world Kendrick is in. Swimming pools is excellent for expanding on the art of peer pressure o believe. Kendrick’s feeling to have to fit in with those around him l, but reflecting on his appetite for failure with each one of his decisions of drugs, drinking. Incredible storytelling. I’m reminded why this is my favorite Kendrick album
I’m so glad you gave love to ‘good kid’ I have always loved this song so much. But ‘m.A.A.d city’ is my all time favorite Kendrick track. The flows, the production, the storytelling, everything is perfect. And it goes hard live. It’s always my favorite song Kendrick performs live
Lookin forward to hearing the Sing About Me breakdown next gkmc vid.
I’m terrified
It's a hell of a song. That song got me into rap, and is still my favorite song.
best song of all time imo.
Every time I’m listening to music and the song comes on, I remember the time in high school when somebody played swimming pools in the office on the comms and the person that I was walking to lunch with was like “did he just say some people wanna kill themselves? Why would they play that at school?” and it made me laugh because I also didn’t hear it clearly but I knew the lyrics I told him no he said they wanna kill their sorrows… still a decade later I still remember that moment because how surprised I was that it was even coming from the office at lunchtime when everyone is out and about
The day derapy posts his good kid mad city reviews back to back is the day world peace is achieved. I want more, derapy, and i want it now.
Good kid being on a debut is legitimately appealing, it feels like LA got it's on we live in Brooklyn
Sing About Me… brother man I’m so ready for it man it really is an amazing song and a week can’t come fast enough
I loved "mAAd city" as soon as I heard it, but I damn near lost my mind when I heard MC Eiht. Kdot always showing love and respect to OGs, and this now old head appreciates it.
I usually listen to these during work but I might have to wait until after work for Sing About Me because it makes me cry every damn time!
Good kid ia legitimately one of Kendricks best ever written songs, maybe even in my top 10, the lyricism, the concept, his performance, it's perfect and yet barely anybody talks about it, tells you how goated this album is
I love maad citys final verse so much, in addition to left and right, it feels like its going in front/behind you to make a full counter clockwise circle its so cool
Had to stay up later to watch this, actively experiencing the mass hallucination, baby.
I so appreciate your take on good kid being under appreciated
I agree
I am in the middle of the episode but had to write 😂
YAWK YAWK YAWK YAWK
Also wait Swimming Pools! Still on of his longest-charting songs lmao. Deserved success
Swimming Pools will always have a special place in my heart, it was the first Kendrick song I ever heard. They used to play it a lot on MTV Base and Trace TV in Nigeria.
Whoa that’s awesome!
Good kid = underrated for no good reason
Maad city = overrated for good reason
had me in the first half
Underrated is an understatement
I know this entire album almost by memory at this point and it’s still so good i still put on my other airpod on when you called us out lol worth it 🔥
If you ever had problems with alcohol, were an awkward kid who was just trying to fit in, always heard stories about your grandad, uncle or other family members also having problems with alcohol and felt you were going down the same path, swimming pools hits too hard from the first verse.
One of the best three track runs in his discography imo. Also, you're not going to break down Sing About Me, it'll break you down lol
Something skipped over is that the bridge in Swimming pools is a double on gang culture and drinking. “Hop out, do you, bang?”, One chopper, one hundred shots, bang”
Everything he’s being asked can be taken as he’s getting pressed to see what gang he’s from or pressured to keep drinking.
I appreciate this channel so much
Reality is absolutely horrible right now
This channel is such a positive fun.
I love your breakdown of the album
I basically agree with every word especially this episode
Thank you! For real.
Not that I want to drag him here but after you listen to gkmc the thought of drake winning against Kendrick in anything related to hip hop is just absolutely crazy.
This series is so nostalgic. I remember sitting in my moms classroom for hours after school going through the genius annotations, making my own connections and interpretations listening to this album over and over. The first album I actively listened to and tired to understand. This album opened my 12-year-old ears to what hip-hop & music really was. This shit is ART🔥🔥🔥
13:31 they played it at my middle school dance😂 My middle school was like 80% black tho
@@royalpalm_941Mfs weren’t even listening to the lyrics bro. They just be like, “this shit hard” and put it on for the kids 💀
Millennial who's about to hit 30 here 🙌 we're out here peeking off of two shots on a good night
I loved this album so much I activley avoided the rest of Kendrick’s discography. The bar was so high I felt he’d never reach it again so I was happy leaving it there. The beef changed that thankfully.
12:23 “DUUUCCCCCKKKKKKK”

Love the episode.
Enjoyed the intro. 👍🏾
BOYYY THAT SAMIDOT COMING I CAAAANT WAAAIT
Kendrick s' ability to make a song with so much introspection and message while making it sound so good is crazy .... Mfs do be saying random ah shit just to rhyme and not make it sound like a rant
The idea of this song playing at a prom is kind of crazy. Like the beats hard, but it’s like a song with a story, that’s not really a club jam kinda thing, but yall do yall 😂
U definitely should do a Cartoons and Cereal breakdown. Such a classic and it was supposed to make the album (i think)
I told my cousin from the suburbs that this was my favorite Kendrick Lamar Track because I had someone ask me where I was from to cause a fight. My cousin was surprised something like that could happen.
15:51 the amount of times I have listened to this album I never knew about this part of the song with full earbuds
The next episode, get ready... Kendrick does well at making these types of songs and while it's not his most popular, I guarantee it's needed... for someone.
Man I vividly remember the very first time I heard of kendrick lamar, it was when he just released swimming pools and they were slintroducing it to us in the UK on the radio. Ngl, initially hated it, until I actually paid attention to the lyrics 😂
I love every Kendrick album, but GKMC(particularly the deluxe), I go back to the most. It’s my favorite to play start to finish. The narrative is so well put together, you have flawless production, you have a wide variety of sounds and vibes, and Kendrick never missteps on the pen. It’s a phenomenal album, and gets my vote as his best, and his only(imo) 10/10. I knew first listen it was special, and I enjoyed it almost as much on my previous listen a week ago. Kendrick really is one of a kind.
Thank you for reading. Have a good day. Much Love ❤️
Might be my favorite album ever
It’s better than I remember
@@Derapysome of the best storytelling ever, with a sincere message and sounds amazing and unique

Once you get through all of the songs, I’d love to listen to a separate full-album recap. The reason GKMC is my favorite rap album oat is how perfect it is when you zoom out and think about the story and commentary as a whole.
when you said to make sure i have both headphones in, I only had my right one in so i put in the left and then the right immediately died 😭 what force is working against me rn
💀
GOOD KID is one of my fav tracks on the album. Flow is so nice
Swimming pools is one of my favorite songs from Kendrick 😭
But I understand why you gave it an 8
Honestly got nothing to say here other than, as someone who was never a party guy, I vibe hard with swimming pools. Alcoholism runs in my family, I know all too well what booze can do to you.
It’s been a min since I last heard gkmc, but hearing Kendrick’s last verse on “m.a.a.d city” was so trippy to me. I never realized it sounded like that until today. Wtf?
Production is wild
Is this Kendrick’s best 3 songs run in his catalog
Great video bro I like your commentary. One minor correction tho, WC (Dub C) isn't from Compton. He's from South Central, same neighborhood as Ice Cube. It's cool bro, everybody thinks Compton and LA is the same.

Swimming Pools speaks to me more at 28 than it did at 18. Working too much and drinking away what little free time you have is a biiiiiiiitch

TPAB is such a great album but its so hard for me to put it over GKMC its such an amazing album
MASS LIKE THE VIDEO BABYYYYYY
You may have mentioned this in the last two videos, but you should definitely check out the bonus songs on the album. I'm not talking about the remixes to bdkmv, or swimming pools (though they're still good), but the extras like black boy fly, now or never, county building blues, and my personal favorite, and lowkey a top 5 track from GKMC in my opinion, collect calls. That track is SO underrated.
they will be covered on patreon :)
@@Derapythat's good, I'm glad you'll at least be covering those tracks 🙏
Can I get a "YAWK YAWK YAWK YAWK!"?
I’m excited for SAMIDOT
GKMC is basically Romeo and Juliet in Compton
i like Swimming Pools, but it was the first Kendrick song i ever heard, so it may be my bias.
My favorite line is "AKs, ARs, ay yall, duck! That's what mamma said while we was eatin that free lunch". I don't know if this is how he meant it but I took it as a response to the criticisms people have for welfare programs. He seems to be saying that just because they had free lunch didn't mean they had it easy by any means.
wait the beats in not like us and TV off sound so similar to maad city.. how did mustard implement that sound so well????
YAWK YAWK YAWK YAWK!!

MAAD CITY always put my subs in safety mode thinking Kendrick pen not on safety
Swimming pools just suffers from being between absolute peak
Literally has two perfect songs before it and a legendary song after
lol not fair at all
I grew up in the streets of a 3rd world country, the family sold meth for a living. gkmc really connects to people that lived it. no acting tough just pure experience.

Smh lmao it’s not W-C . It’s pronounce DUB C. 😂 He’s a legend out here. He also help Damson wit his LA accent on Snowfall (Had a cameo S2E10 behind Franklin in the jail line)
Shoutout MC EIHT too. Another legend

m.A.A.d city is 11/10.
Listening back to these albums, it’s really hard and hilarious to imagine Drake listening to this stuff and thinking, yea… I can definitely rap better than this guy.
I’m saying 😂
So Kendrick partook in a little bud, herb, little Chiba, little dagger, dope, Mary Jane, lettuce, hey, wacky tacky tobaccy, pot, reefer, ganja, Alfalfa, mean green, and now it's got him feeling kinda hazy, kinda lazy, a little crazy. 🗣🗣
Thanks for paying my mortgage, I really appreciate it
Of course
