I use a very idiosyncratic colour order; I start with blacks/greys, then browns, earth yellow, yellow, green, blue, purple, and I end with red. I have no idea why I went that way, it's just what made most sense to me!
I feel quite in the minority but I swatch my pencils on a sheet of nice quality paper which I fold in half and store right in the pencil case. Much like the loose leaf pages, I can hold one against another to compare colors from different sets.
