We Americans are very proud of Ohio State's marching band, even those of us who don't live in Ohio or have any ties to the university. They are simply among the best college marching bands in the country!
Marching bands are very underrated in their level of difficulty, whether high school or college. Imagine learning the music, then learning to play it while marching and then learning to march the formations and putting it all together with playing the music, practicing it over and over and over so all of it is committed to memory. It is extremely hard work.
Seriously underrated. The hardest and most fulfilling thing I've done in life was marching band. Y'all need to look up Drum Corps and see how far it can be taken.!!!
"Marching bands are very underrated in their level of difficulty, whether high school or college." Honestly, the same can be said about cheerleaders at the higher levels.
The members of the marching band is actually playing the music, moving to a specific chorography, and since they are using most of a 100 yard football field, they are athletes in and of themselves. They practice around 1-2 hours a day, 5 days a week, with a 1-2 week camp in the summer semester as well. The Band leader plans this out in advance of the football season (which is every fall semester).
At 3:20: "One Ring to rule them all." This is the half-time show, and it's to entertain the crowd. The defeated ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean segment carries the flag of the University of Michigan, The Ohio State University's arch rival.
To add some perspective on the work of these Band members, on the wall of the football program's indoor practice facility there is a quote from Ohio State's legendary coach, Woody Hayes, that reads "If we practiced half as hard as our Band, we'd be champions".
The name of this band is literally the best damn band in the land. You should definitely check out more of these from the Ohio state band, they do them at halftime.
Adding on the team they shot down was their rival, Michigan, and they do stuff like this all season without even playing them until the last week. There is definitely some video out there documenting their rivalry.
I used to do marching band conpetitively in high school and they literally train months for this. They have to memorize pages of music, where to go, and keep track of the drum major whos conducting them, and they have to all of that PERFECTLY at the same time to get it this good. Major props to the marching band
The second one you didn’t get was Lord of the Rings, did you catch the t-Rex ate a person. Pretty much every school has a marching band from high school thru college and they play before the game, during the game and after the game. Their performances like this one are during the halftime, when players go in for a break.
The Ohio State University is only 10 minutes away from my apartment. The Ohio State University stadium can have over 110,000 people in the stands! The Ohio State University Marching Band is known as "The Best Damn Band in the Land!" This Hollywood Blockbuster tribute is my favorite. You should also react to when The Ohio State University Marching Band performed in London at Wembly performing a "British Invasion' tribute when the band came to perform during an NFL demonstration game there!
I stumbled across one of your videos the other day. I clicked play based on the subject matter. I clicked subscribe because of your enthusiasm. I absolutely love watching you!
School bands (high school and college, which in the U.S. usually means universities) marching and entertaining fans during school sporting events go back over a hundred years. One prep-school novel ca 1910 describes a band playing music from the infield even during a track and field meet. As school bands grew larger, and changed from military-related units to music-department activities, the performances became more elaborate. In 1910, the football game 'intermission' (so called; but I believe that English public-schools called it 'half-time') was ten minutes-nowadays it is twenty minutes long for college games to accommodate the entertainment, and not just let the players rest longer. Compare NFL games, which do not have such entertainments, whose half-time is only twelve minutes. American football inherited the idea of the half-time for changing the ends of the field from British public-school football games-history is complicated! Bands in general, of course, are to rouse school spirit, and so owe something to the military history of marching bands (or drum and bugle corps), who kept the troops marching in step and also built troop morale. Indeed, the guy with the baton is the 'drum major', which hundreds of years ago was the British military officer in command of the drum corps. For a very different but every bit as impressive style of marching band performance, check out Texas A&M University's band, which is one of the few remaining military college bands. They stress precision marching and tight formations. Some of their crossing maneuvers require members to step between the moving feet of the person in front of whom they are crossing. It's amazing to watch. For a separate evolution of military bands into entertainment, look up 'Drum Corps International', whose shows have gradually shifted from military-style performances of the 1940s to elaborate shows with dancers, props, etc., not unlike the Superbowl® halftime entertainments. But they still twirl rifles and not batons…
First was classic superman,; he always changed in a phone booth. Second was the Lord of the Rings-Eye of Sauron. 3rd Harry Potter-Quidditch and the Golden Snitch. 4th of course Jurassic Park; note: the T-Rex ate the opposition's team member. Last, Pirates of the Caribbean sinking Michigan's ship; yes, the oppositions team.
Football; high school, college and pro consists of 4 quarters. The teams play 2 quarters or one half and then go into their locker-rooms for a rest and the bands come out at “halftime” and put on a show. They’ve practiced just as hard as the athletes and learn the music and the “programs”. Ohio St. is used to being super good at their halftime shows. This showed Superman, Lord of the Rings with the rings and Eye of Sauron, Harry Potter and him catching the “snitch” and Jurassic Park where the t-Rex also “ate” a Michigan player and Pirates of the Caribbean. Michigan is one of their biggest rivals.
3:49 is the Eye of Sauron :) At most large universities, each home game has a different halftime show. Which means they need to learn the music and the routine all in about A WEEK! Keep in mind, these are students.
I was a member of the University of Iowa Marching Band. It’s reporting to school early so that you can practice off and on all day for approximately two weeks before school began. Then nightly band practice plus keeping up with your classes and maintaining your GPA. I enjoyed it throughly.
I was in marching band for all four years of high school and LOVED it! I was on the colorguard for my junior and senior years, spinning rifles and flags. Our band was one of the largest in Northern Kentucky and we won a lot of championships. Simon Kenton Pioneers from 1981 to 1985. Ohio State's marching band is always fantastic!
This video was terrific!!! Your reaction was amazing, and the marching band was out of this world! In the pirate scene, it was Ohio State ship (the big O) sinking the Michigan ship (the big M). That is the biggest rivalry in the Big Ten college conference, and these two team often battle to be in the final 4 college playoffs. The harry Potter scene was the game of Cridige (sp?) and Harry Potter was the Seeker to retrieve that flying ball, and when he does, his team wins automatically. But your reaction was also terrific!
This is College Football and this is the half time field show. All bands (High School and College) play before, during and after the game usually. We sit in the stands together and play during the game to get the crowd going or when we make a touchdown. Sometimes we sing as well along with the song if our instrument has a break during the song. High School bands do the same thing as College bands and also compete against other bands. You learn an entire new field show and music for each home football game so it’s different every home game which can be week to week or every other week so you don’t get much time to learn a new field show, plus you still have school every day and homework to keep up on and if you play sports like I did then you have practice for your sport after school every night. Band was my favorite thing in High School. Band students come from all walks of life, financial classes, and athletes and non athletes all together but you truly become like a family because you have to work together daily and through the summer to make the band work great. We spend everyday together through the school year and then a few weeks together through the summer plus we travel all over to perform in parades in the summer, Field Competitions, and Concert Band Competition’s in the winter as well so we spend a-lot of time together on the band bus in tight quarters so you have to learn to get along and everyone helps unload the bus and all the instruments. It really is a team effort to make everything look flawless and easy on the field or on the parade route. So again you really do form tight bonds with your fellow band mates and look out for each other. I have lots of friends from school that I’m still close to today and we live hundreds of miles from each other now and yet everyone of my friends that live far away were fellow band mates. I’ve been out of school for 36 years. Band requires a lot of dedication, intelligence, memorization, counting and athleticism. So when people call us Band Geeks, we just ignore them because they are showing how ignorant they are about what all is involved in being in the band. Not everyone can do it. Most of us have been in school band since we were in the 4th or 5th grade. So by the time we get to High School Band we’ve already been in Band learning the skills we need for 4-5 years. If you’re in a small High School band you may learn to play more than one instrument so you can switch instruments and fill in if someone’s sick or breaks a leg or something and can’t march or play. It’s a challenging organization to be in but loads of hard work and fun at the same time.❤
Quick point, the higher level competition marching bands learn one show, but clean it throughout the semester. The football half time performance was just a fancy dress rehearsal for the competition performances on Saturday.
I went here!! I played trumpet!! This is the halftime show. We practiced for a month before University classes started. Best time of my life! Beats being in rodeo!
The reaction he has to how we [Ohioans] take our halftime seriously and aim for University of Michigan [we're forever rivals, for context] it's hilarous 😂I love how into it you are. You'll see many more Michigan references [the M flag, aka the opposing team] if you watch more of these.
🎼 🎶 This former high school marching band Michigander forgives OH for their UofM shenanigans! 😜 I have been watching and enjoying their MB videos since they've been uploading them to YT.
As a former member of a marching band in school, I can attest to how much work goes into these shows. We were out there all summer and through football season at practice daily even weekends...just as much as the football players, if not more since we also had indoor music rehearsal. It was 100% a sport. Best shape of my life from hauling instruments, running laps, doing balance and flexibility exercises similar to my dance classes, and running these sets over and over in the sun, in uniform, carrying an instrument and expected to maintain perfect form. This is a sport. Anyone who says otherwise has clearly not done it. Super fun and worth every minute!
In college football they do this to keep the fans entertained at halftime. Ohio State wins almost all the time in Band compitition from around America.
These talented students play new music & learn new routines for every home game. How they do what they do is a mystery to me. Sooooooooooooooooo good. These shows are done at halftime while the teams are in the locker room. They keep the crowd entertained while the boys are taking their break. And the ending is Ohio state sinking University of Michigan's 'ship'. I am from MIchigan & they are our rivals. LOL
*This is the HALF TIME show. It happens in the MIDDLE of the GAME when the players rest and rehydrate.* *Marching bands ALSO COMPETE* with each other throughout the US. Its a sport unto itself.
The 'picture' at 3:50 and the one before that were a ring for 'Lord of the Rings' and the eye of sauron respectively. Also the marching band normally comes out in the middle of the game during Half Time to 'put on a show' for the fans as they grab food, drinks, and wait for the second half of the game to start after Half Time is over.
College football, BIG 10 conference which now has more than 10 teams. Love watching this excellent marching band! It's so nifty when they spell out OHIO and a special band member is selected to dot the '' I '' !
The ‘best damn band in the land’. It’s always a joy to see them perform, and one of my favorite things that they do is the double cursive script of ‘Ohio’. I have several friends who go to Ohio State, (I’m from northeast Ohio, but I go to college in Cincinnati), and boy am I jealous that they get to see both the Ohio State marching band and the football team live
This is a half time show. They play two quarters, go to the locker room, then come out and play the last two quarters. It's halftime entertainment. Both college and the NFL do it.
Ohio State does have a show every home game, but they go all out like this one during big game days and special events going on at the college. Being a Buckeye I have been to a few games and the best part for me and my kids is watching the half time shows. But not only does OSU marching band put on great shows some of the bigger high schools around here put on some shows for big events like Homecoming or revival games. They even have half time play offs with the marching bands and what they call drum offs, to see what schools have the better drummers. It’s all in fun and a great way to liven up the onlookers at the games.
You should check them out in London in 2005 when the NFL played their first game in London. They did British rock bands and British landmarks. The NFL took Ohio State for the half time show.
This is the half time show (I believe), but for highschool I know we do pre gram which is before the game to introduce the football team and to do the national anthem, and half time shows are used to allow the football team to get a longer break before the last half of the game.
I have watched a few of his reaction videos and his optimism and 'awe' is so contagious ❤! Is it a cultural thing that I get the marching band sets and theme songs right away while he doesn't know what some of them are? Thinking about the marching band sets in this video, the Michael Jackson tribute video and the video games video: Is UK pop culture different from the US?
It's the halftime show. American Football is 4 quarters and there is a halftime show following quarter 2 and before quarter 3. But Ohio State Marching Band is amazing and their performances regardless are top notch. I'm an Ohioan and actually from Columbus (live in the suburbs now) which is where Ohio State. Very proud of the Buckeyes.
6:35 This is a great question, almost every college does a marching band at halftime. Ohio State has pretty much forever been in conversation as one of the best in the country, and certainly has the impression of itself that it IS the best. The Best Damn Band in the Land, it is called. There are plenty of places that will argue, Texas A&M, a lot of all black universities like Grambling, plenty of conversation. But OSU is pretty generally recognized as being as good as it gets. I think we got a new band director somewhere in the late 00's, early 10's and they began doing these heavily coordinated patterns with themes. I think the first one was a Michael Jackson tribute. I'm honestly not sure if we still do these, as I haven't been to a home game in many years after moving state.
Our Ohio State University Marching Band are known as TBDBITL aka The Best Damn Band in The Land! lol and they really are. I am a Nurse who used to work at OSU hospital and every afternoon you could hear them practicing. BTW, the half time shows are only done at home games, about 6-8 a season and each one is different. They memorize the music, so they don't have to fool with sheet music. Great aren't they?? The game was not against Michigan but that is who we sunk, a Very big rivalry. Did you notice the T-rex chewed up the drum major and spit out a helmet?
This is college football~ The Ohio State Buckeyes! Go Bucks! O H I O Doesn't matter what side of the stadium you are on - there are huge screens in the stadium so you get the full effect! All colleges have marching bands -- they are music students - who were probably in their High school band - some are music majors - studying to be music teachers etc. The M is for Michigan - our rival!
I was in marching band in high school... It was so much fun.... Very hard work... Its is underestimated as to how much work goes into it. My favorite school is university of Ohio marching band
It's college football... this is the Ohio State University marching band. The one after Superman was Mt. Doom in Lord of the Rings, the volcano where The One Ring was forged. Watch for the Jurassic Park formation to end with the T-Rex eating the drum major (every person from other countries doing these reaction videos misses it, including this time). The reason behind doing this is IT'S THE HALFTIME SHOW!!!!
In the Superman section, they're harking back to the old B & W days, when Superman changed clothes in a phone booth, rather than spinning. Uncertain what #2 was ; #3 was Harry Potter (notice the bird); next = Jurassic Park: since you didn't say anything about it, I'm guessing you missed the joke that started around 7:15, when the dinosaur ate someone. Then, at 7:35, he spit out the guy's helmet. It turns out it was a helmet from the opposing team--Michigan. Last was Pirates of the Caribbean. Rather than doing this show before or after the game, this is what's called the Halftime Show, i.e., 2 of the 4 quarters are history.
This is The Ohio State University marching band, located in Columbus, Ohio.....The capitol of Ohio in the center of the state. Superman. Lord of the Rings Harry Potter Jurassic Park Pirate ships are for Ohio State and their archrival Michigan. fighting it out. Quite possibly the biggest rivalry in College football. It is the last game of the scheduled season and played the Saturday after Thanksgiving which is celebrated the 4 th Thursday in Novenber. There is a giant screen in the stadium to see everything going on on the field.
I loooooove the music from Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman. Just SO fkn good so I was thinking, how does he not recognize the song, as I hummed along. But then I realized.. Not many people bought those movies and have said to their partner next to them, “The music is pretty good in this huh?” 😂
The reason is for entertainment. But, these students have practiced for hours on end so it's for also for perseverance, dedication, discipline, and school spirit. Go Buckeyes!!! I love you!
As someone that did marching band in high school, it never once occurred to me that this was something uniquely American. 14-18 yr olds regularly do simplified versions of what the OSU band is doing. OSU band is on its own level though, being at the top marching band in the country, including drill teams, drum & bugle corps, and military bands.
This is college football, and every school has their own marching band. They play during the game, but they also have their own competitions against other marching bands. The bands perform during half time. This is Ohio State Vs Michigan.
so The Ohio State University is rivals with Michigan University. Thats the M you saw. its the biggest rivalry in college sports. here in Ohio we wont say their name we call them "that team up north" our rivalry game is called "The Game" and during that week all M's get crossed out. The states of Ohio and Michigan long ago fought a "war" over a city. during which Ohioans referred to Michiganders as "Wolverines" due to their disgusting eating habits and Michigan liked it because the animal is really tough and now the University of Michigan is the Michigan Wolverines. Ohio State back in 1968 had a coach named Woody Hayes and in a game where OSU was destroying Michigan he went for 2 points after a touchdown just to run up the score and when asked why he did that after the game Woody Hayes famously said "because i couldn't go for 3"
It’s called the golden snitch lol Harry played (when he could lol the amount of times he couldn’t) seeker and it was his position to catch the snitch and end the game
We Americans are very proud of Ohio State's marching band, even those of us who don't live in Ohio or have any ties to the university. They are simply among the best college marching bands in the country!
The saying: THE BEST DAMN BAND IN THE LAND!!!!!!

Marching bands are serious business in college man. Especially in the Southern states. 👍
This is a half time show. They play two quarters, go to the locker room, then come out and play the last two quarters. It's halftime entertainment. Both college and the NFL do it.
*There are BIG SCREEN TVS (JUMBO-TRONS) throughout the stadium, so people on the other side can see the formation.*
Another great video to watch to see how Americans love their college ball is the Virginia Tech Enter Sandman clip. It's really exciting!
It's halftime and they do their shows!!!
Ohio state is a big college town! The band is one of the best in the country , They are known for this! Ohio State marching Band
OH!
@@S_Cooper0404MI!
Bands perform at half-time when the players leave the field at the end of the 2nd quarter.
The “handbag” was the Eye of Sauron from LOTR.
The second one - one ring to rule them all and the all-seeing eye.
My high school band director made us form a “ VD “ for Veteran’s Day ! The entire crowd was laughing. 😂
'Cause Ohio State is Flexing Their Mad Skills 🥰🤩😍❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Absolutely 💯 the best college band in America !!
The half time show is the way schools show the other up
I was in marching band in high school... It was so much fun.... Very hard work... Its is underestimated as to how much work goes into it. My favorite school is university of Ohio marching band
Sorry, its Ohio University
Those flags represent Ohio State and Michigan Wolverines, their old rivals that go back many years. Go Wolverines!
This is the halftime show. I have a special love ❤ for TBDBITL . I’m a proud Ohioian and a OSU Buckeye fan. OH - IO!
Did you see the dinosaur eat the Michigan fan? LOL If not, check it out again!
Superman.
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
Jurassic Park
Pirate ships are for Ohio State and their archrival Michigan. fighting it out. Quite possibly the biggest rivalry in College football.
It is the last game of the scheduled season and played the Saturday after Thanksgiving which is celebrated the 4 th Thursday in Novenber.
There is a giant screen in
the stadium to see everything going on on the field.
You have to remember the marching band is playing all the music as they do this.
These big shows are half-time shows. The players are off the field for the intermission and the bands put on a show
The reason is for entertainment. But, these students have practiced for hours on end so it's for also for perseverance, dedication, discipline, and school spirit. Go Buckeyes!!! I love you!
OSU has the best marching band, but I'll ALWAYS be a diehard Michigan State Spartan fan.
The marching band perform during half-time when the football players take a break.
The greatest show band on earth.
You have to watch HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities) bands in America perform as well 😉
what you thought was a handbag at 3:45 was the eye of zindor from lord of the rings
I think you mean the Eye of Sauron. 🙂
@@patriciacole3030 Yes, you're right I never saw the movie,just took a guess
@@fannybuster I do recommend that you see the movies. They were epic!
M stands for Michigan. The Ohio State /Michigan game is a fierce rivalry. This show takes place at 1/2 time. They do a different one each game.
They do it because they can. 😊 They are amazing
What is the reason? It's an absolute flex. 💯 Go Buckeyes!!🎉
The second one is "Lord of the Rings".
This is college football, and every school has their own marching band. They play during the game, but they also have their own competitions against other marching bands. The bands perform during half time. This is Ohio State Vs Michigan.
OSU and Michigan are major sports rivals so not surprising OSU blew up “the Enemy.”
We Americans love our college sports, especially 🏈
You've said you want to come to America... come to Ohio. We're nice and welcoming.
I love the way the dinosaur ate the man
"Script Ohio" is an awesome video to view next. Hopefully the camera will be a bit closer to the field
Its the 1/2 time show. Football has 2 halfs with a 20 minute break in between.
so The Ohio State University is rivals with Michigan University. Ohio State back in 1968 had a coach named Woody Hayes and in a game where OSU was destroying Michigan he went for 2 points after a touchdown just to run up the score and when asked why he did that after the game Woody Hayes famously said "because i couldn't go for 3"
Marching bands... Standard halftime entertainment in football games
It’s called the golden snitch lol Harry played (when he could lol the amount of times he couldn’t) seeker and it was his position to catch the snitch and end the game
Being from Southern Ohio - Go Buckeyes ! ❣️
THE Ohio State and the "M" stands for the University of Michigan.
BTW We beat them today. YES, WE DID. Love From Michigan and it's a very cold Evening with a snow storm on the way.
Best Damn Band In The Land!! Go Buckeyes!!!!
More kids go to college on marching band scholarships than all of the athletic scholarships combined.
Honey, cause we’re the best damn band in all the land
Ohio State and Michigan State are major rivals.
This is the half time show in the middle of the football game
"Is that Ironman" smh. Lmao.
That got me in the laughs too 😂😂😂
O!H! I!O!!! Best dam band in the land!!! ❤❤❤❤
Bro if you like that. Then watch their halftime show where they did a tribute to Michael Jackson
I think it was Lord of the rings and this is the halftime show
This is the half time show...just entertainment
