As an IU fan I'm definitely envious that Purdue was able to replace Keady so easily with Painter and then to find out that he was an IU fan growing up. So close. Purdue fans need to realize how lucky the are to have this situation. A lot of good programs don't have anyone to replace their HoF coach and they struggle after he leaves. UNC and Duke might be hurting in a few years if Davis and Scheyer don't work out. IU has gone 20+ and counting to find the right coach.
Yes IU went thru some coaches since Knight,I am a Purdue fan But ,If Purdue isn't playing IU ,U will root for I U ,Nother Dame,Ball state Butler, and so fourth and so on
I feel you, but it’s not as simple as just “luck.” It’s called having leadership and a program that’s level-headed, patient and understands that it takes time to BUILDING something. IU seems to have lost that. And if something starts to go in a negative direction, or doesn’t live up to ridiculous expectations, they kick a good coach out the door. Or they recruit guys on ranking and not enough on fit or identity. You make your own luck.
I could listen to these stories all day. I have lived in Indiana my whole life, and have watched both programs closely for a full half century. I remember Lee Rose as Purdue coach for cryin out loud! I'm one of the rare Hoosier diehard fans that also liked Purdue. I could name 100 guys from those programs in 3 minutes. I saw Joe Barry Carroll, Keith Edmonson, the Walker brothers, Scooby Scearce, Jim Rowinski, Doug Lee, and same for my Hoosiers. I live and breathe it, and don't even get me started on high school. 1974 Northrop Bruins, 1982 Plymouth (Skiles), Connersville in 83 I think, Bedford North Lawrence (Bailey), loved it all!
this resonated with me a lot man! my family has lived in tippecanoe county for at least a century, if not longer, and i’ve lived here right off purdue’s campus my entire life. you wouldn’t believe some of the stories and memorabilia my nearly 80 y/o grandpa has compiled throughout his life!
That was an amazing story, thank you so much for taking the time to share that. So enjoyed it. I miss the good old days. Love the big 10, but always loved These two teams the best.
Looks like Purdue has been placed at the top of the bracket list again. It's an outstanding achievement for the coach and team, but it also puts a lot of pressure on everyone as all the other teams they will play will be out in full force. Every team will be looking at how Nebraska defended Purdue to a tie in regulation. What Nebraska did will be copied by every team in the Big Ten this season. So get ready! When you practice, put 6 guys out there against your 5. Double team Edy every time down the floor. Get used to it and be ready. Hopefully the rest of the guys will get the shooting touch back. I see great things for you all. This year, it's a real team effort. You all need to enjoy what you have. Play hard, have fun and by all means stick together till graduation. If any of you leave early, you will be giving up such a special time in your lives. God Bless you all. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Now lets all Boiler Up!
Great insights on so many levels about RMK...he was always about how "the game of basketball is mental to physical as 4 is to 1"...in this current day at IU, we now have again a Coach who thinks the right way about how winning games occurs mostly in game like practices w/ accountability and preparation, in Coach Cignetti!
Awesome video! I am a diehard IU fan and I have to admit Purdue has done it right and Matt is an excellent coach! Really sad it took IU this long to get it right!
I also grew up a Hoosier fan then went to school at Purdue and came over to the right side of the force. Ironically I still like watching Indiana basketball but can't stand the fans. Too many bandwagoners. You can spot them a mile away when they start bragging about Notre Dame football.
I grew up in Indiana. This has always been my opinion. Keady was a better coach but Knight got the recruiting. IU had better whatever. Gene Keady could put together a team no one wanted and make a team. He's still my favorite coach ever. Sorry Matt. Prove me wrong this season
How can you say Keady was a better coach when Knight has 3 Nattys? Postseason games count more than regular season championships when measuring the greatness of a coach (or a player for that matter.) Also, recruiting is part of being a great coach in college. If you don't want to recruit, coach in the pros.
Yes, knight won the big games, even as Keady bested Knight head to head (Purdue is dominate all time against IU, and Painter era stretching out the series even more. Hopefully IU being better will mean rivalry games again)
I had a friend that worked for a travel agency in Bloomington, Bobby Knight called and she answered the phone and said his travel arrangements were messed up and proceeded to berate her and call her names she hung up on him (she had nothing to do with his travel arrangements), he then got her fired. I lost all respect for him at that point. There are two types of leaders-----leaders that earn peoples respect thru treating people right, and those that behave as bully's and feel that you have to put fear into people to get the best out of them. Bobby was a bully.
My sister was in charge of butting Bob Knights Mic on in an interview. She was told not to let him do it because he always puts it in the wrong spot for good sound quality. He grabbed the mic out of her hand and told her he was going to put the mic on "lil lady." She tried to insist on moving it to the correct location but he went to being pissed off pretty quick. She got in trouble as the interview picked up all the sweater-crunching sounds.

Woodson is doing pretty well now
Well said

You make your own luck.
At least IU has national titles to show for.
I'm a Hoosier fan and I think Coach Painter is the best Coach in the country!
Purdue you are fortunate to have his caliber of Coaching
I'm an IU fan but always liked Coach Painter. Great stories.
Nice for a change to see respect and hear positive things only about Coach Knight
Painter's stories are epic.

every podcast should have 10 minutes of Coach Knight stories. the GOAT deserves that
Yup

Love hearing these stories. Great interviews.

As a IU fan, I now understand why I like Painter. Probably even more now. Awesome interview guys.

Awesome Painter is a Bobby Knight guy .
Great stuff.

If you say gene Keady is a better coach than bob knight you have no idea about basketball
at least one in your family was intelligent enough to graduate from a certified world class educational institution! hammer down

Yep sounds about right. But boy could that asshole coach!
I love Matt- not a PU fan - I always wonder if Matt would come to IU to coach? wow would that be cool
i did not know this
Next time you have Coach Painter on your show ask him about the time he was playing at Purdue and went down to VU for the weekend...
Hard core IU fan here, total respect for Painter. Compare Brad Miller to Andre Patterson and you decide
It’s Garfinkle, not Garfunkel. Painter thinks the 5 Star creator performed with Paul Simon.
Stupid Google ads
But poor coaching against FD
One is a disgusting person but won when it mattered, the other seems to be a nice person but can't win anything outside B1G.
