Man I know what you mean about having that huge weight lifted off of you. The last month or so before I retired I had co-workers coming up to me saying I physically looked so much more relaxed. When I finally walked out that door for the last time, it was like literally walking out of a nightmare. Loved my boss. Hated my job. Within a month or so I was actually able to get a full nights sleep without taking drugs. So many mental and physical changes already, and I’ve only been gone a couple months. I could NEVER go back at this point. Funny how once you are really removed from a toxic job environment, you quickly realize you should have left sooner. Life is too precious to waste in a job that makes you miserable. I retired at age 62. I am SO looking forward to this next chapter!

I’m 63, secretly planning to retire in 4 months and literally counting the days. The company is struggling, my direct manager is failing and scapegoating me, and I think I may get fired soon for the first time in my life. I have applied to 200 jobs for which I’m qualified in the past few months and haven’t had a single interview. I’ve thought of telling them I have decided to retire or shift to part time in 4 months, but I don’t trust them not to fire me. They tend to take things personally.

@@reebeeable I understand. Two big hang-ups for me. 1. I have a financial goal this year of meeting this year’s projected salary to improve my social security calculation on future monthly retirement benefits. I am replacing one of my $0 years (from being home with babies) with this year’s salary. I have to get it as high as possible by the end of the year.
      2. I am 63 and have been working since I was 12, and have never been fired. I would be very upset to start my retirement by getting fired from the last full time job of my career, especially as a way for my manager to avoid responsibility for his errors by throwing me under the bus. That that is an awful thing to do, it’s not illegal. I shouldn’t care, but I do.

Good fresh content on early retirement. At age 59/single, with 500K, no pension, I am mostly concerned about your mortgage. Normally in this situation (early retirement), you would want to be debt free, so what is your payment, property tax and equity? I would also have some concern about taking social security at 62, and would wait till at least 65 when Medicare also starts. You need to really scrub your expenses, did you cancel life insurance, as you probably should.
