    Hello friends,
Welcome to the very first episode of my Work-Life Diaries! After taking a little break from UA-cam, I spent some time figuring out the direction I want to take with my content. I initially thought that wrapping up my job search series was an opportunity for me to move away from work-related videos. But the truth is, work is such a huge part of my life, and there’s still so much I want to share with you all.
Thanks to your feedback and encouragement, I’ve decided to continue sharing snippets of both my professional and personal life. In this episode, I’m diving into my first week at my new job and sharing how I’m crafting my work persona. I hope you enjoy following along as I navigate this new chapter!
    xx,

I understand your thought process about being yourself but not to much at work for this or that reason, but something my mom taught me many, many years ago was everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time. You are a young, hard working woman who definitely deserves the work position you have, or you wouldn’t be there. You are naturally a great person, don’t hide yourself. If others have a problem or can’t move beyond the past, that is their problem, not yours. You are amazing, show the world that!❤

Julia, it is called decision fatigue. You're making all of these new decisions (new work environment, new work commute, new people) that you're initially being overwhelmed. You'll be okay after 2 -3 weeks. You can do this!

8:30 I resonate with this 100% being an East Asian woman and looking younger than my counterparts. People always tell me it's a compliment if someone thinks I look young but they don't understand the struggle of not being taken seriously in the workplace. Definitely something I am also working on in improving the way I carry myself, speak, etc

The way you dress also says a lot about you... There is a way and a way... I'm also a non-Asian and they always tell me I look like 14 years old. But if I dress appropriately I look like my age and with a certain difference

I know what you mean, Julia. Coming from a heavily male-dominated industry, as a young-looking woman (young for my age, anyway lol) I had to carefully craft my image. Assertiveness was key but in a way that earned respect. It was a daily task lol but was such a game-changer for me. I ended up loving my teammates and was treated with respect.

totally relate to not being taken seriously in the workplace as someone that looks really young. I also have a soft spoken, higher pitched voice. such a hard line to straddle between being seen as assertive but also social and fun. i haven't quite figured it out yet.

Here’s my recommendation for your new Work Life series: “Dare to Lead” It’s a book by Brene Brown. The subtitles on the book jacket say it all: “Daring greatly and rising strong at work” “Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.” Good Luck, Julia!

Hi Julia, thank you for sharing. I’m in a similar situation at work, where it's male-dominated, and most of my colleagues are much more experienced. I’ve definitely made the mistake of revealing too much about myself. Before switching to finance a few years ago, I worked as a flight attendant, which was a choice I made because I wanted to. Although I don’t have many years of experience in finance, I’ve been continuously studying and learning. Still, I often feel belittled at work, and there are times when I’m spoken to as if I’m less competent. It’s fascinating how people’s perceptions can change based on your job, background, or ethnicity. In reality, I graduated from the top university in my country and speak several languages.
Currently, I’m learning data analytics online and aim to move into the finance tech space. Side note: I’m also a Cantonese speaker working in North America

Congrats on the new position! Totally normal to be exhausted after jumping back into FTE after some time out of the grind. I use the C922 and I find it can be really zoomed but if I use a program called “hand mirror” (desktop plug-in to check how you look on camera really quickly) it fixes the zoom issue.

5:00 BTW, FTC guidelines require *clear disclosure* of sponsorships, which for videos entails *not just a caption* but a mention in the video itself, it doesn't need to be verbal, it can be a text overlay, but it should be there.
I might have missed it, but that's also kind of the point. Really shouldn't have to be digging to the bottom of your video description to find out that the camera thing was a sponsorship...

It is incredibly difficult to get respect as a female in tech who looks young (speaking from experience, I'm 5'0", look younger than my age but at least now I'm clearly over 30). It's a bit of a catch-22. If you aren't assertive, you aren't heard. If you are too assertive, well, you probably know the drill. You're a bossy woman. It's a challenge. I've been in tech 24 years and only in the last IDK 7-8 years have I really just settled in with "no, I am skilled and I know this thing and I will speak up."
Anyway, congrats on your new job!

Under-promise, then surprise them with the delivery, with each subsequent project getting progressively better and better according to feedback. Hope it's going well :) P.S. Logitech c920x hd pro webcam is the way to go -- usually you can get it for about $60. I don't think that a webcam under $30 is going to do you any favors.

I think one good thing to do is in groups, be a basic bitch (My hobbies are cooking, traveling and finding ways to stay active) but when developing work friendships it's okay to be more specific (I love traveling to see my family in China and am in a K-Pop tribute dance group). In a group setting if you say the latter they'll just go "Oh okay apply all Asian stereotypes to this one." But also, no need to share too much in general. Boundaries are our friends.

@@ila9063 i’m not picking on her. I’m trying to help her as a person in management who works in a tech company. Always dress for the role, no matter what.

@@EastCoastPlusForty I'm yet to see a person working in tech wearing a suit. Personally, I'd rather not work for a company that requires one so maybe it's good she wouldn't get hired in a place like that anyway. Plenty of tech companies out there where business casual is fine (even overdressed).
