Long live the Michi, such a impressive ship with a long busy history. My very favorite in a close contest with several other old ladies of the lake. What a legacy these hard working beauties leave. May they all continue their continuing work for commerce and our entertainment. What a ship!!❤
Thanks for the update! So many of the old ore boats are gone now it’s a shame to lose another one, but if she’s no longer sea worthy, better to lose a ship to the scrap yard than losing more sailors to the unforgiving lakes!
It is pronounced Mishipicoten, not a mitch , in the area, I grew up near the mouth of the river ,, Played along the sand banks and beaches, some of the most beautiful sand in the world.
Great video. Would love an update on Michipicoten's fleet mate Cuyahoga. She had an engine room fire in May of '23, and came back from that. This spring, she burned again in Astabula. She was the last operating of the 16 "Maritimers" built in 1943. Seems LLT/Rand is having bad luck with their older ships since they bare boat chartered all of ASC's less than 1000 footers. A coincidence?
I presume the crack is under the waterline, but where ? One risk of repair may be to strengthen the fixed area and putting stress on another to cause another crack. I also wonder if any insurer will want to cover it or at a huge premium.
Hoyt pronounce the H, not oyt; tackonite, not tasonite (the c in taconite is pronounce like a k); Gott pronounced Got not goat; Helen H pronounce the H, it is not Elen. Also, this video is taken from Wikipedia word for word, except for tugboat mentions.
Its not called Elton Hoyt Two, How about Elton Hoyt the Second ! If your going to talk boats, it would be helpful if you learned the terminology first.
Excellent video! No distracting music. Concise, and informative. Well done.
She's older than me but not by much. I wish her well. Thanks Seadog.
It is going to be interesting to see what happens.

Would be nice to see her made into a museum. Just need someone with deep pockets.
Thank you for this video.
She is in layup now, no idea what is going to happen. No idea if she has been cleared to go back to work or not.
I really appreciate your videos on the Micihpicoten mainly bc I had no clue how to pronounce it until now
lol, I get most of the names wrong, and I get beat up in the comment section by the so called experts, it seems they have nothing better to do....

The crack is where the side meets the bottom, starboard side. I would think the insurance company will get the final say here, no insurance, no ship.
Buckeye was made into a barge buy K&K, not LLT/Rand. They purchased it later.

Sounds like the ship was falling apart, did not learn a thing from the Fitzgerald.
YEP it is a similar story from the Fitzgerald and they got lucky it was in calm water the day it happen because it could have sunk too :(
