This is what European trains should be about: express or Intercity consists, made up of coaches pulled by a locomotive, with a restaurant car, linking together the Continent’s most important cities during the day or the night! Great video!
I agree!
As opposed to what, high speed EMUs? No way!
I wish USA had this
Loco-pulled trains in europe are the worlds superior way to travel.
@@godofdestruction4636 we do?
Very nice video. Sorry to point that the Rhine river is not the border in Basel. Basel Bad is still Basel, in Switzerland. The border is a few meters before the station of Weil am Rhein. The station Basel Bad itself is managed by the DB, but it's still on swiss territory.
Oh good to know! Thanks :-)
Ah shoot, I wanted to mention this as well! You can clearly see the Roche Tower on the other side of the river, which is still in Basel.
Was going to say, thanks for mentioning!
You are correct. However, there is a D/CH border within Basel Badischer Bahnhof. Taking the SBB train from Basel Hbf to Base Bad, you will even see sometimes some customs personal. Within Basel Bad itself, the boundary is clearly marked but usually not manned. Schengen makes crossing border easily -- a few years ago, however, some Swiss issued visas were not Schengen visa and I have watched some scenes where people were caught illegally crossing, be it in Basel or in the Neuchâtel -- Paris TGV.
@@alphanet72 The Basel Badischer Bahnhof is build on Swiss territory and only leased by the Deutsche Bahn. Customs are still located at this station but no marks anymore. The marks they had on the ground did not mark the boundary between German and Swiss part of the Station. They only marked the control and waiting points for border and custom control.
Have a great new week!! 🚉
Nice video! I happened to be in the panorama coach on this trip as well, I was the guy in the blue shirt diagonally opposite you on the right hand side of the train after Basel :). I was on the train from Zürich all the way to Osnabrück to go home in the Netherlands, ending a trip that took me all the way to Sicily. I found the seats and the ride to be very comfortable, even on an 8 hour long ride like I did. The train was a bit late as we were stuck somewhere between Mannheim and Mainz as you showed, but my connecting train to the Netherlands was late as well in classic German fashion, so that was not an issue. I"m very glad I took this Eurocity instead of the fastest route from Milan to the Netherlands!
It is actually possible to reserve a seat in the panorama coach, however that is only the case if you reserve a seat online at DB itself. There you can select a seat using a seat map. The panorama coach is coach number 263. I did it this way, also so I could get a reservation on the IC from Osnabrück to the Netherlands on the same itinerary. Your comment is true for other operators/booking services than DB, they do allocate you a random 1st class seat which might not be in the panorama coach.
As a fact, is not when you cross the Rhine River on train at Basel when you enter Germany, rather after approx 1-2 km after the Basel Badischer Bahnhof is the border.
Thank you. Wonderful memories for me. I traveled that line years ago and the scenery along the Rhine was unforgettable. I remember Karlsruhe Hbf (scary as I was in there alone at night once) and Cologne Hbf (I hung out there a lot because it was fun and energetic). Love this channel.
on our river cruise in 2017, got to get close and photograph trains leaving the cologne station, while we were docked about one every minutes, could see them crossing over the bridge. loved the ride you took, brought back memories of what we saw on our cruise.
Hello can we chat privately??
I arrived in Basel after a journey from Calais in 1948, bound for Lugano. The contrast after war ravaged France was startling, Switzerland was a pleasant shock, clean electric trains, as much food as you wanted, no rationing…..and Lugano- just perfect. If you have watched the Burt Lancaster film The Train, a lot of the stations in France were those we passed through.
European trains ROCK!!! The United States is so far behind in terms of passenger rail, overnight trains, even simple intercity metro and subway services. We're called the land of opportunity...WELL we have an opportunity to create more transit and help to save the planet. Also, Simply Railways is the best channel on UA-cam.
I agree. My husband and I made an extensive in Europe and America is very well far behind in train travel. 3/2/2023 8:45 am
@@Joyce-im5in why did you write the date and time in your comment
True, but the US is far ahead when it comes to freight trains. Train cargo Market share is super high compared to Europe. Greetings from Europe
Regarding the Coaches you saw after leaving Koblenz, those are former Rheingold/TEE Coaches that belong to the DB Museum that is located in Koblenz which i highly recommend visiting when you get the Chance. Nice Video on the SBB EuroCity which is sadly a Type of Train in Europe that isnt that common anymore :(
Thanks. I.m Norwegian and road in 1978 from Basel to Hamburg with a TEE train with a E10 loc. I'm not sure if it was 103 loc.
Fast!

That must have been TEE 72 "Helvetia" i am pretty sure that in 1978 the 103s already took over from the E10. Was only a Year later that the TEE was History and Germany started the IC'79 Program :)
@@placeholderGER Thanks for reply 🙂
I'm a Senior now in Norway and playing with the thought to take a train trip from Hamburg in September or October down to the Area of South Germany - Suisse. See the Wine festivals and so on. Visit Basel last Feb./March during Fasnacht. Last time was Feb. 1978, this time I travel by plane.
Magnifique promenade autour du Rhin , ces voitures panoramiques sont géniale !!! 😍
The DB Class 101 has some of the largest wheels I’ve ever seen on a locomotive. I was looking at one of the units right there at Basel SBB. Such an iconic sound as well.
is it a Traxx?
@@user-wu4cw5ed5w no, db br 101 is unique from any family, tranxx would be db br 186
@@Osaka_Ai sounds familiar though
@@user-wu4cw5ed5w but the germans like to let their locomotives looks the same
@@user-wu4cw5ed5w the 101 is an early ancestor of the Traxx though. They were built by ADtranz which was a consortium of ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) und Daimler-Benz which was merged into Bombardier Transportation Germany in 2001. Bombardier though is known for the Traxx Family...
As the Traxx goes back to the AEG 12x (Baureihe 128) which was destined to become an replacement for the 101 and older DDR Reichsbahn locos)
Great video! When in Hamburg, don't forget to visit Miniatur Wunderland, world's largest model railway
Of course, that was the whole reason why I was there!
What a beautiful train! So relaxing and meditative. Thank you Thibault for this beautiful video.
Love from Dhaka Bangladesh ❤🇧🇩
Great, i just happened to be in Germany a few days back and used the ICE train to travel between Frankfurt and Baden Baden. It was a pleasant experience. With love from India.
Class 101 is so successful even the US wanted some and now they’re the workhorse of New Jersey Transit
This is what I call swiss quality.
All train system shoud look like the swiss.
That line is beautiful. I still think the line between Prague and Dresden is just as beautiful if not better. I don't know why. Still, both are amazing ❤
Wow! Very spectacular view. Thanks for sharing this video.
Watching from Canada.
Ahhhh, the memories. Thank you for the wonderful journey through my homeland. I miss it and will never see my birth country again. So, it's nice to go along the journey once more even if it is only by video.
Thx for taking us with you on this scenic trip. 👍🏾😎
Some great footage - well done! I have whiplash there is so much to see :)
I saw the sign for Baden-Baden and thought, "So that's where I was born.
Dad in Canadian Air Force was stationed there.
Also, being a WWII history buff, a lot of those city names caused a twinge of sadness.
08:50 No, you are still in Switzerland. The River Rhine is not the border. Even the next station (Basel Badischer Bahnhof) is located on swiss ground.
Hey
Can we chat privately??
I sat in this car a few days ago, fully unexpected. I was traveling in the Eurocity from Przemysl to Graz and I was in it from Oswiecim to Ostrava-Svinov.
Nice video. Love that panorama coach! And the dining car. Beautiful scenery. Thanks Thibault😀💚
I'm not German, but this was beautiful. I would love to go to Germany one day.
@@Lokomowal no it isn't. You just have bad experience
Don't listen to that negative reply above me. You can come to Germany if you want to experience the country.
Let me tell you some cute landmarks you can go to.
Berlin wall
Brandenburg Gate
Elbphilharmonie Hamburg
Hafen city Hamburg
Speicherstadt Hamburg
Castle Neuschwanstein Munich.
English Garden Munich
Cologne cathedrals
Miniature Wunderland Hamburg.
The Alps.
And if you don't like it, it's ok.
Thanks for letting me know.
@Fermati Chebellosei don't hold your breath :^)
Its a shame the germans have a complete goverment ( Ampel) of total idiots.
What a beautiful trip on a beautiful train with views from the amazing panoramic observation car!
So pretty. I did the same trip in the other direction from Hamburg to Zurich. Had been such a silent and peaceful journey.
Hello sarac
Reminded me of my trip to the Moselle in the 80s. And onto the Rhine with my rail pass. Stunning 🤩 ❤
I hope you tried some Riesling while you were there!
@@ruinerblodsinn6648 certainly did 😋
Großartige Reportage! Gratulation!
Another classy video, keep em coming 🤩🤩🤩
Damn! I figured out when you showed the map of your trip that you were going to go through Mannheim and Lampertheim. I lived in a satellite village of Lampertheim called Lampertheim-Rosengarten and went through Lampertheim alot as a kid, so I was really hoping to see Lampertheim as you passed. It's too bad that you didn't get footage of it, but it's still very nice to see Germany from your perspective.
I watch your videos, vicariously, to remember Germany again and almost as motivation. Thank you so much for what you do, Simply Railway.
The windows are awesome. Great video as always.
Nice video! The ride along the Rhine river is breathtaking!! 😃
สวยงามคุณภาพและมีเอกลักษณ์
Amazing as always
It's so quiet inside the wagons as well. Wow!
Swiss quality !
Hi
Can we chat privately??
Great video !!
Ah, I remember when I was a kid and my family and me rode in this Carriage in the „Transalpin“ consist from Basel to Vienna! Good memories, always loved that car! Great video!
At SBB counter if you say panoramic seat we can put this in our system and you can reserve it specifically. We can not book a seat out of a seat map (like DB within Germany in ICE or RJX within Austria) but if it is this consist (i think it formerly ran to Munich before the ETR610 Astoro Pendolino replacement and now itˋs sometimes also in usage on IC3 between Chur - Zurich). But if it is this consist we can add this wish and see if there is space left in our intern system. So feel free to book with us ;) but veery nice video man 😊
Great video! I love railways in Europe, they're amazing
Great video! Loved it!
Splendide ! Merci pour cette belle video. Cela fait rêver tous les amateurs de trains!
If only the UK could of had those carriages with amazing view above whilst travelling. Spectacular view 😍
Well, if only you had a bigger loading gauge...
@@SimplyRailway yeah if only our tunnels weren't so old. Same problem with the old deep level tube lines, small trains compared to the sub surface lines, and various other means of transport in London
I just heard that ScotRail are talking about introducing panorama carriages when they get new stock for the West Highland line!
Especially in Ireland! Imagine if Iarnród Eireann had trains with those carriages! They'd be so cool won't they?
They have something like the Royal Scotsman, maybe others. They just separate in touristic trains, and people who want to be fast.
Scenic route and fast route are not always the same, so that normal trains could act as attraction.
Such panorama cars should be even standard! It would help to draw more people from motorways to railways.
Last June I had taken a cruise on the Rhine (Basel to Amsterdam) and had wondered about the trains on the banks. Thank you for the lovely view from the train. I started at Zurich (flying in from the US) and loved your showing the station because I know the station well. The SBB people are extraordinary and one even held back the train departure as I (a seventy-ish out-of-shape person) was running to make it. As soon as he waved me into the first class (the nearest coach) we were off our way. We had first visited Switzerland in 1986 when we had taken various scenic journeys. This time I took the Bernina Express and visited the Swiss Museum of Transport at Lucerne. Same efficiency almost immediately after the COVID restrictions were lifted. The SBB mobile app is the best app I have ever used.
Great trip report
The car reminds me of Amtraks sightseer lounge. I didn’t realize Europe had anything like that. On Amtrak though, you can sit there for free, open to everyone on the train. Unlike this, where you have to buy a ticket for it.
Excellent videography, Nice Narration, Good Story telling, Highlighting key places, giving useful information. Liked it. You got a new subscriber. Keep up the good work and Happy Vlogging. Thx.
thanks for the free tour.... from the Philippines here
Went from the Bodensee to Dortmund in the spring of 1978 and was so impressed by the Rhine River that when I went back to Germany on holiday my wife and I went from Düsseldorf to Mainz just for the day out , thoroughly recommend the Rhine valley for a train trip, ps walked over the bridge at cologne quite a few times the last time we walked it it was completely covered with padlocks I think they were going to remove them all because of the extra weight they were causing
Wunderbar trip! Dankishõn! Segen!
Thank you for this great video.I too am a huge fan of the SBB Panoramwagens. Some services into Austria also use these cars, but since the introduction of RailJets on the Wien to Zurich route they are used on some service between Graz, Salzburg and Zurich. Another fine experience !
Bravo! Wonderful video!
Nice route and good views from the panorama coach
Incredible. The scenery is amazing and the parts along the Rhine remind me of my home line Amtrak's Empire Service and Metro-North's Hudson line along the Hudson River. Wish we had electrification and the Empire Service, Adirondack and Ethan Allen had an equivalent to those incredible panoramawagons. They're single-deck so no problem with the clearances into Penn Station. Too bad the U.S. is so backards with trains and transit. Hope to take this trip someday in my life.

Very beautiful video. My family and I traveled through Germany by rail in 1998. The trains were so punctual in those days that one could adjust times on their watches based on train arrival and departure times. German train journey is one of the best in the world, and seeing Rhine River brought back wonderful memories of 2 weeks of travel by train. Of course, the USA has a long way to go to make a train journey more enjoyable. Two weeks on Amtrak in 2015 was OK .
Quite beautiful 😍 ❤
Great video as always Thibault, many thanks. We took this train from Koln to Basel🎉last September. Everything was fine until Karlsruhe, where the service was suddenly terminated due, apparently, to a casualty on the line ahead. We had to join an already crowded DB ICE as far as Offenburg then got turfed off that as well. I managed to sort out a route to Freiburg Im Breisgau, then to Basel Bad, on local DB trains, where we got the bus to Basel SBB and on to Zurich and Bellinzona (our destination). We were 5 hours late arriving. Thank God for the dining car on the Zurich to Bellinzona train where we got ourselves a hot meal.
great train ride!
nice train and view
as someone who lives in bavaria it never ceases to amaze me how flat the north of germany is! my brain simply can't comprehend the thought of looking out the window and not seeing mountains in the distance :)
Good work
The wrap around windows remind me of the GOLDEN PASS PANORAMIC I rode from Lucerne to Interlaken in 2010.
This coach is still used on the Lucerne - Engelberg express
The Golden Pass Panoramic no longer exists on this route, but there are modern trains with big windows in service
Ah, I love this coach!
Swiss perfection
It's amazing to see you ride this train and route! I bought this train as a set for my model railway including the panorama coach and really want to ride it in person. Unfortunately, riding a train as a wheelchair user is not that simple. During your tour through the train I only spotted seats for disabled persons/ a spot for wheelchairs in the second class. Maybe one day I will get the chance to ride this train to Hamburg with my girlfried to see the Miniatur Wunderland and meet with some friends there. Thank you for the video! :)
@ 18:27 you meet the Rhine once again … and several passengers staring down at their phone screens. Perhaps the scenery on their phone is more enticing than what’s out the window. 🤔🙄🤷♂️
I travelled on a few Eurocity trains, including some that no longer exist such as the Venice-Budapest one. As far, my best experiences on these trains were on the Basel-Milan via the Gotthard basis tunnel, and the Munich-Bologna one. Lovely sceneries.
Definitely need to travel once on the rhine valley
Excellent! 👍👍
5 Minutes in and I already want to buy a ticket. Great video- u outdid urself this time. Now u r in trouble bcuz u have to top this in the future!
Looks great
I would like to express my gratitude to Simply Railway for bringing to light, European trains that we never thought existed.
Love this vagon. Start in Sommer 2023, OBB will use this vagon for train Graz Hbf - Przemyśl Główny via Kraków !
Nice trip 👌❤️❤️
It's not so long ago that I took the EC Transalpin (Graz to Zürich) also in a panorama car. In this train the restaurant is operated by DoN (Austria) so a bit more affordable. And it's also a spectacular line, with the valleys of Enns and Salzach, the line along the lake of Zell am See, passing several skiing areas close by and then going up the Inn before going up the Arlberg and down on the other side, after a short unspectacular section through Liechtenstein rolling along two wonderful Swiss lakes (Walensee, Zürichsee) before reaching Zürich. I can definitely recommend this one as well.
By the way on the site of the Austrian railways (ÖBB ticketing) you can reserve a seat specifically in the panorama car. Where did you book this one?
You mentioned in the video the coaches you saw just outside of Koblenz. The location you saw them is Koblenz Luetzel which is where the DB museum is located. The coaches in TEE livery are part of the collection their.
In reality, within the city of Basel, the Rhine does not coincide with the demarcation line between Switzerland and Germany. However, the platform area of the Badischer Bahnhof in Basel is considered German territory. The same goes for Schaffhausen: although it is north of the Rhine, it is in Switzerland, with the exception of the German enclave of Büsingen am Hochrhein
It looks like such a smooth train ride...certainly not what I'm used to on Amtrak!
Excellent!
Hi
Can we chat privately??
i did it in coach in summer of 1990 , lot's of waterfalls , cheers
Nice video I like it train journey beautiful 😍❤️
Simply the best ..travel by train
It is most interesting, Thibault, that your "Panamanora Wagon" that you rode on appears to be quite similar to Amtrak's sightseer lounge cars - great that the railroads provide these opportunities for sightseeing.
That's super line across the my city. Well done friend. Need to colonge - Milan long way..
The Rheingold express line through the Rhein valley besides the Lorelei Rock is a beautiful landscape.
👏 Nice travel report !
About the Rhine river: Towards Germany it's a border water - roughly between the two Schaffhausen(Schaffhausen-Switzerland and Schaffhouse-près-Seltz) ... more precisely between Constance and Lauterbourg. Thanks to the Rhine the ancient Council town of Constance was spared in WWII - in contrast to Schaffhausen ... Also Kleinbasel was not spared by the Allied Forces.
Kleinbasel hosts some of the tallest manmade structures of Switzerland - St-Chrischona(tallest tower) and Bau2(tallest building). Many places left of the Rhine waters have a strong roman/catholic tradition(Cologne, Mainz, Koblenz for example).
The Panorama coach is - as mentioned in numerous comments - also available on the Transalpin train. Not less scenic is the classic Gotthard route - though just available during the summer season.
Really nice train.
Wow very beautiful. I like to take one of those trains to enjoy all of this beautiful nature in Germany. For me, that I never taken one of those trains. Must be a unique experience. 👌👌🤩🤩

It´s a pity your video does not show the two key highlights of the line along the Rhine river. Those two are the Pfalzgrafenstein Castle near Kaub, situated on island in the river, and the so-called Mouse Tower near Bingen. Another highlight is perhaps the remnants of the infamous Remagen Bridege.
belle video un beau train suisse merci sipli railway pour ce voyage et contenu
Hope to do this next year

The left rhine route is still crazily busy, just mostly with regional trains and cargo. But it's very much overloaded with trains.
