- A new nanny arrives to Downton to look after little Sybbie and George but she makes a horrible mistake... makes Thomas Barrow an enemy. It is at that point that Thomas tells Cora straight away about Nanny West's incompetence and how she leaves the children unattended.

He really has a soft spot for people who appreciate him and especially when they are nice to him. There are people who are so rude to him and especially him having the burden of being gay, I totally understand why to some people he is rude.

It was very intense and full of suppressed anger, resolved to get it over and done with as quickly as possible.
No one ever comments on how wonderful Edith was to Isobelle. Everyone was so caught up in their own grief that they completely forgot that she has lost her child and must be suffering the most.

Lady Edith was forever overlooked and so was Mrs. Crawley. I appreciate how Lady Edith reached out to her in a time of grief and sorrow.

That's a good point. One of the things I love about Downton Abbey is that each character is complex. In some situations they're the good guy but in some situations they're the bad guy. You rarely see that in TV shows but it's reality for most people. Even Thomas is the hero in several situations.
nano15j i noticed, and yes, Edith was stellar with Isobelle. It was at that moment that they surely must've bonded. It was touching and genuine and a lovely moment. Edith was wonderful here.
Really love how Thomas looks out for Sybil's daughter. He picks up something wrong right away and becomes not only little Sybil's but all the children's guardian angel. Sybil'd have been touched and grateful by this undying friendship and kindness.

Although I think that Thomas did it because he didn't like it that Nanny West was ordering him around. I love that this is one of the few times that his scheming actually resulted in something good for someone other than him.

@@andreasoto5205 oh I think he will be. I think it'll be kind of cute because he'll probably still be the butler when little George takes over. Probably similar to how Carson was with Robert because they mentioned person came into the house as a whole boy or something like that when he was very very young. So he probably would have been around when Robert was little. Personally I would absolutely love it if they had a Downton Abbey movie that starts when little George is grown and in charge of Downton with Mary taking the role of The Dowager Countess

The smile on Thomas' face when he sees Sybbie in her pram is one of genuine pleasure. He cares about her not only because of her mother, he really cares for the daughter as well. Sybil had a gift for accepting people as they are and helping them to better themselves, Thomas knows what a rarity she was. It is no wonder he is protective of her daughter. Good on Cora for listening to him even though she isn't fond of him. As gentle as Cora is, I'd bet she was holding back from physically harming Nanny West.
It was because it involved her grandchildren. He told her both and then you saw them talking without hearing the rest of it. No way Cora was going to brush it off. What confuses me a bit is why not let Thomas say hi to Sybbie when she obviously hated her? Had she left that alone, she would have gone undetected for longer. That being said, she clearly liked having control and she made the mistake of pissing off Thomas. I would love to have seen her try this with Carson. Maybe Bates as well because he was protective of the family.
It's clear that Thomas has a soft spot for children, based on the way he acts with little Sybbie and later little George. It makes sense in a way. Thomas is lonely and isolated from other people, (yes, partly because he can be really evil sometimes.) He says straight out that very few people have ever been kind to him, and also the fact that homosexuality was outlawed would cause him to become bitter towards people. But no matter how scummy he can be, he is genuinely kind and gentle with the children. Probably because he feels that young children are innocent enough to like him without judgement.
Yeah, really! At that point, she probably wanted to wring the nanny's neck!
@@melindoranightsilver9298 Thomas gets lucky. He does mean things and sometimes in spite of that, he gets lucky.. like when he saved Edith... or when he stole Isis to "find her". He just wanted to get Nanny into trouble and struck lucky that she had been very nasty to Sybbie so Cora sacked her on the spot...
To be fair--the thought of Nanny saying straight out that she had left two children of that age on their own would've been cause for sacking or at least a severe reprimand--the fact that she was being abusive to Sybbie was icing on the cake.
This is one of my favorite mini-story lines, Barrow hating on Nanny West literally saved little Sybbie. She was going to grow up full of trauma, nannies could've made or break great people back then. George VI is one example of how children suffered at the hands of evil nannies and how parents were clueless of how their children were being raised.
For sure, and it still goes on. Wealthy people still let their nannies raise their kids, and many of them are cold or cruel. Many historical figures were traumatized by evil nannies and absent parents. I don't think it would have happened with Sybbie though since Tom was more there for her and with her than the Crawleys were for their kids.
I didn't have a "nanny," but did have a horrible babysitter when I was five years old. My dad was a single parent and I never said a word about the abusive situation that he was delivering me into....didn't want to rock the boat. But my advice is for children who are being abused...ROCK THAT BOAT!
What happened with George VI and his nanny
@@briancheuy7703 when he was a child and being nannied, the parents would come to visit their children. His nanny used to pinch him to make him cry so he'd be handed back quickly; and other times, she wouldn't feed him.

One of Thomas’ biggest victories in the show: he didn’t scheme, he simply observed Nanny West and looked after these children because he genuinely loves them. That’s how he got Nanny West properly fired for being a terrible woman. I was glad about his action this time, really
True. However, I think that this was more of an example of Barrow scheming for a different reason. He was slighted by Nanny West and he was getting back at her. To his surprise, he was right (but in a different way unbeknownst to him). I think that this was a first important step on his redemption arc though. It must have felt good to do something good for once. And, of course, he did love the kids -- especially Sybie.
Ber P. How is he a traitor for protecting the children? Sure he had other selfish motives, but that doesn’t take away the fact that he also cares for the children, especially Sybil, and saw she was being treating differently and that it needed to be addressed. Whether it was for all the right reasons or not it was the right thing to do, not traitorous like his past actions actually were.

I suspect that Thomas thought he'd be at war with Nanny West for a much longer time to come, and never expected to suddenly discover that he'd won. He might have been on the side of the angels this one time, but we've got to remember that, as far as he knew, he was actually lying when he told Cora about Nanny West neglecting the children. He has no idea what just passed the night before, and probably thought, "Wait, those lies I told, they were actually true?"
@@christopherhuang9501 Not necessarily. Nanny West let it slip that she'd left the children alone *twice* while talking to Thomas. He may not have known she was verbally abusing Sybbie, but I think he gathered she wasn't doing her job properly.
Christopher Huang no he wasn’t lying. He saw Sybil was being treated differently. Example when the nanny wouldn’t let her have egg with her tea.

@Ber P. why exactly is he a traitor? He somehow knew she wasn't suited as a nanny. May it be her way of interfering with him or because he genuinally cared for Sybille. The nanny was disrespectful towards him, so i do not see how he betrayed her, as they weren't on the same side. She made it clear, that she didn't want to be on a good basis with Thomas which lead to him telling Cora. But to betray someone (aka being a traitor) you have to be on one side. You can't betray your enemys.

That was so cruel of Nanny West. I was so wishing in that scene that a member of the family would have overheard and walked straight back to the nursery with Isobel and warned Nanny West to NEVER turn away little George's grandmother.

I've known teachers and health care givers like West. So full of hate and prejudice.
You always dislike Thomas and then he does something like exposes the abusive nanny’s and saves Edith from certain death in her bedroom. An antagonist for most of the show but performs some of the most heroic actions without thinking.

Also, the fact that she wanted to stay in the room personally instead of fetching Anna or someone else shows how protective of the kids she was in that moment. It wasn't only about West being a bad nanny, she was genuinely worried that she could do something else to the babies before leaving

For those that don't understand why Nanny West was SO panicked... the moment Cora made clear she was leaving in the morning her life was done. Back in those days a reference was EVERYTHING. Without one you would get hired no where. And you couldn't have a gap in your records because houses talk... everyone would know she worked for the Crawleys and if she tried to cover it up she'd be out on her behind instantly.
To those using the meme "I'm going to ruin this woman's career" you are literally right. Nanny West will never get another job at any estate in England again. Her only hope would be to travel abroad and even then everyone would still want to know her history.
At best she might get a job at a pub waiting tables. More likely she is headed for the poor house.

1:12 - preventing the other servants from befriending the children
1:34 - giving orders to fellow servants
4:43 - possibly starving Sybbie
5:20 - getting above herself
6:22 - preventing Isobel from seeing her own grandson
6:45 - trying to get George to think himself better than Sybbie
6:47 - referring to Sybbie as a "chauffeur's daughter"
6:54 - menacing and insulting Sybbie
6:58 - calling Sybbie a "crossbreed", as if she weren't human
7:08 - trying to cover her tracks
7:34 - lying about her abuse of Sybbie
Plus, Nanny West abusing Sybbie is also an insult to the memory of Sybil, who was her mother's favorite. Small wonder Cora wasted no time in giving West the sack!

I absolutely LOVED Edith's response to Isobel about how she's still a grandmother. Had it been real life, you'd have to imagine that would have been the first time Isobel would have come anywhere close to a smile since the tragedy.
Her words were SO STRONG, I don't think any other character made me aware a little more about what child's loss is for a parent

Thomas would make a good Slytherin. He looks out for others but also thinks about how to advance his own position. I do think he genuinely cares for the children, especially little Sybil as in a sense she's an outsider like him.

Notice how George frequently got all the adoration and Sybbie wasn’t allowed to be doted on. She wanted Sybbie to know early on she was not worthy of the House of Grantham, and if allowed to continue she would have grown up feeling neglected and possibly abused. Thomas may have had the ulterior motive of revenge when he told Cora about his suspicions but it’s clear he also knew that the children were in danger.
People did that with girls then. "Oh, you can't inherit because you're not a boy!" Or they'd favour the boys over the girls. Both of my grandmothers did that. When it comes to my niece and nephews, I try hard not to play favourites.
Mrs. Hughes needs to be in the Olympics for how quickly she got to that room.

I think because no one protected Thomas when he was a child (He mentions his relationship with his father wasn't a good one) It's sparked something inside him to protect Miss. Sybbie and Master George
Thomas was devastated by Sybil’s death, she always treated him with kindness and working side by side with him made him see how special she was. It makes complete sense that he would be protective of Sybbie
I know Barrow had his moments... but Sybil made one hell of an ally by being kind to him. He'll never let anyone harm her daughter.

a I know, that was another of her bullying tactics. I'm referring to when Carson sees Isobel, and Isobel says she wanted to see George, but Nanny West decided it wasn't a good time. (Doubt Cora'd have been as meek as Isobel and just walked away if Nanny West had DARED tell her she couldn't see Sybbie-her granddaughter!) Isobel should have asked herself how her old friend the Dowager would react on being told she wasn't allowed to see one of the children-and done likewise!

IronAngel505 .She was playing on Isobel's grief after Matthew's death. Isobel was so worn out she couldn't take a conflict with Nanny West ( however much Nanny West deserved it) so soon after losing her son years before he should have died.

Does anyone notice Thomas' change in tone when he says "Why can't miss sibbie have an egg to her tea?" He was suspicious straight away. Anyway if Thomas had of done what Nanny west had asked then something would be said to nanny west about "why did you say sibbie couldn't have the eggs" Nanny west would lie and then Thomas would get in trouble. So Thomas was smart to not follow those instructions especially to be able to prove that she was neglecting Sibbie.

I think Thomas somewhat considered Lady Sybil to be his friend. As he staded himself, she was the only person who was ever nice to him, so was he the only servant who burst out crying when she died.
They both served in the hospital together.
@@rachaelm7084 Aye, forgot that one. Think since then she was the only one safe from his actions. Good for the family, he eventually became loyal. The man was extremely dangerous, first he did lots of damage by mistakes and plotting, later on when asked to do something Lord Sinderby's butler, on only almost ended the butler's whole career, but also the Lord Sinderby's whole career.

Poor Isobel. Honestly, her being denied access to George would have been enough, never mind her unacceptable treatment of Sybbie. It's sad no one seemed to notice that insult to a grieving grandmother.

Thomas is a very complex character. He is very scheming, also very sensitive. This show does point out how hard it must've been for a gay person in these times. Wonderfully acted by Rob James Collier 🙂

I can’t help liking Thomas, he’s a real badass too.
I always liked Thomas. He's been horrible mostly but you could always tell there was something tragic about him, a good person deep down, struggling to show it.
He's a manipulative asshole, but his being a struggling and confused gay character helps keep the show interesting.

This is why Thomas is one of my favorite characters. Sure he’s petty but quite loyal and brave to those close to him. There was also that incident with saving Jimmy which was very selfless.
I think Thomas is unusually perceptive when it comes to the mistreatment with children.
It’s highly implied that he was abused as a child. There is a scene where Bates slams him against the wall to threaten him, and Thomas doesn’t even blink.
Abuse toward himself doesn’t even phase him anymore, but he was able to pick up on the subtle signs that Nanny West was mistreating Sybbie.
He might have given up on the human race, but he’ll do anything to break the cycle and make sure no child is treated the way he was growing up.
Very good observation! And I think there is actually one scene where Thomas makes a comment about his loveless childhood in an orphanage.
@@Celisar1 Thomas didn't grow up as an orphan, he still had a father. However, according to what he told Baxter, his father didn't like him.
@@DellaStreet123 Single parent children were put in orphanages, especially in the U.S., usually when the mother died and the father was not able to take care of them. Sometimes the parent would visit, and sometimes take them home when things were better, but sometimes the parent was never seen again.

Never mess with Barrow! I think he was suspicious of the nanny from the start, as he was surprised that she wouldn’t allow him to interact with or touch the children without her permission, but he probably thought she was just uppity and controlling. He was initially being petty in his dislike of her, for the most part, but his hunch was right when he was told Sybbie couldn’t have eggs. That’s when he knew she was evil. 👏🏻
Love the irony of how you think Thomas' claims towards Nanny West aren't real, when they in fact are because she's semi-rude to all the characters and even worse to the kids. Props to Cora for taking her down swiftly.
Would've loved to hear Mrs. Hughes' opinion on the many before the cut.
I would have liked for her to have had a scene with Carson, her bossing HIM around, trying to bully him. Or even her and the Dowager.
@Kate DiLiberto Oh not her trying to bully the Dowager. I am talking about some other scenario occuring where the Dowager may have put her down. Maybe her finding out Nanny West would not let Isobel see George and dealing with it. Or she saw Nanny West doing something she did not like and dealt with her. Just to name a few possibilities.
When I first saw this when the episode aired I could not believe that she spoke to Sybbie with such venom. I loved how Thomas had Nanny West number! And Cora...props to a woman who can make badass so classy.
I kind of wish Carson or the Dowager was with her though. The Dowager would have knocked her down even further and Carson would not have made sure she left that Night vs the next morning.

The nanny prevents their grandmother from visiting, I suspect because she viewed Matthew’s mother as ‘low class’, and she was also starting to cut back on Sybbie’s food. It was a good thing Thomas acted when he did. She could have done serious damage to Sybbie’s mental and physical well-being.
Mrs. Crawley is only a grandmother to one of the 2 nursery children- George who will one day inheirt the estate from his Grandpa. She isn't the grandma of Sybil Jr, more like a great aunt or something

When she spoke down to him she gave him an excuse to look into her actions more carefully. That her actions proved... less than admirable, shall we say? Is hardly Thomas' doing. No, she was snobbish toward him and his class, and sloppy about concealing her mistreatment of Sybbie.
I always liked Thomas, but I loved him butting heads with Nanny West. I would've been exactly the same way with her. Being so rude and uppity. Besides he knew something was off about her from the beginning.
I also loved Cora sacking Nanny West. You can tell she's barely containing her rage. Love it.
Thomas may be a difficult soul to understand, but his heart and loyalty is the right place. I admire how he cares for the children, who in some manner bring out the best in his character. His torment is softened by his guardianship of the children. A classy act in such a man, to be sure...
Penelope Wilton is an amazing actress. She really puts forth the exhaustion and apathy of the recently bereaved. I loved watching her character come back to life after Matthew's death.
I love how wide Cora's eyes get and the look on her face when she says "Why, what's happened?" It gets me every single time I watch it!
If you didn’t notice, Thomas was picking up on the vibe that the nanny preferred the boy over the girl. The nanny clearly preferred the boy and she was withholding food from the baby girl.
Thomas was a real douche like 99% of the time before a certain event took place. His affection for the children showed us a different side for him that I couldn't help but love to pieces. Thomas really confused me while watching. I both hated him and loved him at the same time, and moments like him looking after the kids just really made me love him all the more despite his douche behavior to the other servants most of the time. I'm happy with where the show, movie took him. I wish we got see more of his devolpment and his relationship with the new generation though.

I think Barrow had a rough time growing up, with him having to hide his sexual orientation. I could see his behavior at the start of series is due to years of being bullied for who he is, that he masked his insecurity by becoming a bully himself as a defense mechanism. Also, having O'Brien as a partner in crime allowed him to amplify their aggression.
Only after O'Brien left that we see improvement in Barrow behavior, as he no longer could justify his actions and becoming aware how it affects his relationship with other member of staff (plus his experience during the war)
@@julianaayuyahya I completely agree. What did it do to people to know that being who they were was illegal, immoral and perverted, and for which they could go to prison? If I remember correctly, he had family issues as well. Where would he learn to be a loving, caring person, in the shadows they had to hide in? I think much of Thomas's behavior was, as you said, a defense, to hurt first to protect himself. He was able to open his heart though. Thomas had alot of substance, not a one note character like Mary or many of the others.
Plus him always making time to play with the children is adorable to watch.
Barrow is a GREAT character. Complex, villainous at times, but ultimately so interesting.

Thomas is a crack up. He really became very likable the last couple seasons. Hilarious storyline here. I miss Downton Abbey so much. Once it was over, I was like, “now what”. It was like that familiar place you go for comfort was gone. So sad.

I had the privilege and honor of visiting Highclere Castle during a recent trip to England. I found the estate very charming and comfortable for a grand home. Thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the wonderful ladies in the gift shop.
My fathers family was mean to me and nice to my cousins when i was a kid. My mom stopped communication. Some people are just evil to certain children

I love how great comforter Edith was for Isobel here. She actually seems to be great person to comfort and listens to others. Maybe that's the reason why Cora and Robert were ignoring her for most of the time, she could handle many situations and they thought she didn't need their attention

Loved Thomas from his very first scene. Never hated him for a moment even when he was being his most deceitful and he is fantastic in the movie!

Well his dislike might have been part of it but you can see he WAS worried .
1 he served ( himself he didn t send a footman ) tea late on purpose so that he could watch her bring the kids , where she did not say a word to/ about Sybbie .
2 she refused to let her have an egg with her tea . Evil nannies tended to starve kids . George 6 suffered through that .
