Cloudburst is one of the Transformers I had back in the 80's. I bought him because I thought he looked neat and would fit in with my Micro Transformers as "Jetfire" like character. I really had no use for the shell. Back in 2003 when I lost my job I had to sell off ALL of my toys to make ends meet for a little while. He was one I sold off. Now, over 20 years later and with things being better, I have been buying all the Basic Pretender Inner Robots from the first waves. Think the skinny guys that transform by flipping their legs over their head. I have re-aquired Cloudburst and bought all but 1 of this style, Iguanus. They sit on my desk and make the PERFECT toys with just the right bit of "fiddle factor" to keep me going through the day. No tabs to line up, no panels to clip together, no shell forming, just simple fun toys.
Yes!!!! A new TRDQ with a new monthly theme?!! Amazing! One of my favourites as a kid was Ultra Pretender Roadblock. My mum got it for me as I was ill and off school for a while. It wasn't until last year that I clicked who it was and had no clue it was a Transformer! Another wonderful video Gavin and thanks for the warm and fuzzy nostalgia trip ❤
Holly crap another Roadblock fan! There are two of us?! He was a great toy. Three toys in one. I still think he was the best of the bunch. The shell had great articulation, the big green tank was fun and the little guy looked pretty good in both modes.
@@steelsiphon another?! The legends are true?!!! Yeah loads of fun! The tank rolled really well and I'd always make ramps for it to zoom down and clatter through assorted Thundercats, Turtles and, best of all, a couple of Rock lords. Good times!
Just imagine Starscream's high, screeching voice coming out of that human face. Also, those big eyebrows would be great for all kinds of fiendish facial expressions.
Hullo! IDK if anyone needs to hear this, but the Armada Super Starscream figure is up for preorder on TFSource and will be out on CMDStore soon. It's sold out on BBTS. Good luck!!!
God, imagine being a kid in Japan picking up the new versions of some classic characters and all you get in the box is that Starscream. Not even a pretender shell.
I truly believe that, if the Autobots did Animal Pretenders instead of those "Future Warriors" dump trucks, this line would've had been remembered much more fondly.
For me Pretenders were always like Alpha Romeos....crap, but there was just something you loved about them. Right up there with Headmasters and Targetmasters as my favourite Transformers, even though the Autobots looked like a bunch of 40K Space Marines who reaaaaally let themselves go. Go on the fat party boys!!!!
Pretenders are my favorite g1 gimmick line, and i will die on that hill. Are they the most complicated things in the world? Primus no, but they're weird as hell, and that's the point.
The classic Pretenders were the ones I played with most as a kid. Still pretty fond of the Bumblebee and Grimlock from that set. It's kinda wild that this is how the first new designs of established figures were presented to us.
Wonder if they can attempt new Pretenders like this and not so much what we got in Power of the Primes or the mixing of the two forms? Though I suppose even with a bit of charm, it could still be somewhat cumbersome to make them as is and still be a stellar toy.
Pretenders really work best in most cases with the shells being the robots like with Bludgeon, Thunderwing, Iguanus, SkullGrin, Submarauder, and Bomb-Burst as the main examples
You might want to mention (your show, whatever pfft) that the Classic pretender line of Bumblebee, Starscream, Grimlock and Jazz all also got stand alone bot releases in the U.S. as "Transformers Legends" in the, now defunct, department store "K-Mart". They are literally the same bots, no running changes, just packaged as the bots themselves, their guns and stickers.
I like pretenders the possibility of the inner robots was (usually) pretty good for the time. Can't but think it would have been better being action figures that fit inside the robot mode and then ride in or on the vehicle mode. Still I loved the animal based ones and the monster ones they often doubled up as bad guys in other toy lines.
I wonder if there is a market for modern day 6 inch fully poseable non transformable Pretender shells. Release them in GI Joe Classified or T Spark something.
one thing i wish pretenders had done was use more plastic colours and parts for the shells, when almost everything on them is paint, especially the faces and the helmets attached to those faces by friction alone, it really leads to the poor things suffering some serious paint wear, more than other g1 toys even. but then again if they were better they wouldnt be as charmingly crappy as they are now, would they?
That’s not Starscream! I’ve seen Starscream and tha….. OHHHHH, wow! There he is. Hidden inside the whole darn time.
'Pretenders hide, disappointment inside!'
there were some good ones like Bumblebee and Metalhawk at least
"PREEETEMBERS HIDE!"
"A CONTORTER INSIDE!"
Lol! In 1989, I was saying "It's a Starscream toy!" It had been at least 3 years since the last time Starscream was on shelves.
I approve of Pretember.
Ah yes, my favorite boy: Scarscream
Cloudburst almost got it on with a giant warrior lady, while Pretender Starscream got shot once and went home crying.
Cloudburst also got his head chopped off by that very giant lady
@@steelsiphonThere are worse ways to go out

Cloudburst! I had him back in the day. Loved him to bits, that robot mode figure was much loved.

Starscream looks like a pissed-off Viking Gregory Peck

Pretenders hide a cheeky malteser inside.

“Still, that’s a haircut you could cut bread with”
I really vividly remember hating Pretenders when I was a wee fella. They've bloody grown on me, though. Grimlocks shell looks like John Candy!

Ahem, goldbug and Powermaster prime.
@@russellharrell2747 ahh they were the year before weren't they?
Makes me think that maybe we all have robots inside if someone could just crack us open for us.
With those colours and spikey helmet, Starscream could be Tzeench chaos marine

That pretender shell is definitely not what I think of when I think Starscream. I think a fancy frilly knight like Griffith from Berzerk
Pretenders really work best in most cases with the shells being the robots like with Bludgeon, Thunderwing, Iguanus, SkullGrin, Submarauder, and Bomb-Burst as the main examples
There's a little room for extra stuff in this Pretember. Maybe next year we'll get a proper Monstructor to compare with the old one.
I ironically want Pretender starscream
it could just be the latta connection, but the starscream shell head looks kinda like star brigade cobra commander.
Cloudburst!

ahoy Gavin!, loved meeting you at tfn!, (i was the guy who nearly forgot his art print lol)
Hahaha nice to meet you too!
Yeh but when you get the Marvel UK story to back him up Pretender Starscream wins IMHO

I got that starscream for my birthday. I loved it because of the character. Not actually a great toy in hindsight
I had Cross blades and wave rider. I kinda miss cross blades
A shame they didn't continue the pretender after Bomb-burst. Before you mention Metalhawk, I guess he count but he's more of an Headmaster character.
Hey at least Starscream's chest doesn't pho form...of all things.
I wonder if there is a market for modern day 6 inch fully poseable non transformable Pretender shells. Release them in GI Joe Classified or T Spark something.

Has there ever been any serious effort to update this gimmick? Not just update the ‘bots, but actually revise & refine the gimmick.
Was cloudburst the one that got decapitated by a space Amazon? I could never keep the autobot pretenders straight.
Hello Gavin
Hello Lex
did anyone watch Tranformers One?
I had the K-Mart pack without the pretender shells and Bumblebee was my favorite of those. Jazz and Grimlock tied for second place.
