    pretty sure it said " not to lay out horizontally"

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  2 роки тому

      Yes, it did. I technically installed this against their directions and perhaps it would’ve gone better had I followed the instructions exactly. However, I believe there are arguments for the way I did it too and the install has stood the test of time and looks as good as the day it was finished. But yes technically I installed it incorrectly according to the instructions. Thanks for the comment. 👍

    This is the problem with DYI videos. The backing is to be installed vertically so it's no wonder why it was so difficult.

    Thanks for posting this video.
    At first, I thought to myself, oh no, what have I gotten myself into. I have watched countless videos and there is no real easy way to roll the adhesive out other that vertically and just cover the outlets and then using a knife cut around the outlets.
    Measuring the location on the wall, then transferring those measurements to the paper, then attempting to match the hole and get the paper to lay flat with no bubbles is almost impossible.
    The way I see it is, you learned a lesson and provided that lesson to the rest of us! I appreciate your effort!

      A positive comment, thanks! Haha, yes I got ripped apart a few times for my horizontal installation, but it works and is still holding strong after all the years. In hindsight, perhaps a vertical installation may have been easier, but I’m not 100% convinced of that. Best of luck on your installation and feel free to update this thread on your progress. 👍

    I don't understand why you don't just attach the roll of tape on the wall and roll it out to the destination smoothing as you go. then cut the holes out while attached to the wall

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  2 роки тому

      Hello. if you could line up the roll perfectly, I could see that approach working. But understand that this stuff is so sticky that if you adhered even slightly, you’d have a real tough time removing. So if you had a slight misalignment from the start, you’d be up a creek. But I can see your idea working if you could perfectly align the roll. 👍

      You are wrong. It's not that sticky. You won't have a problem at all putting this up. Don't listened to this guy.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  2 роки тому

      Hello. Yes, I did install wrong according to the instructions. Many have pointed that out and it’s fair, but I feel like the way I did it decreased the amount of seams and decreased the potential for the corners to peel up. It was just a thought I had while installing right or wrong. I’m going to try it again and go horizontal, but I’ve had the backsplash on for several years now and it’s as good as it was when I finished it. Thanks for the comment.

    Thank you for the video. As others have said, and as the MusselBound web site states, you really do not want to try to do this horizontally. Vertical would have been so much more reasonable. I would think that smaller pieces everywhere would be better, too...like up to/around outlets. Watching you try to do the piece around the outlet, I also realized you were setting yourself up with having to put a small strip above it...none of that would have been necessary if you'd simply rolled each piece down from the cabinets and cut off at the bottom.

    • @FastFixYouTube

      Yes, I went a different route with the application thinking I had a better way. I’ll use this product again, but install vertically and see how that goes. My only concern is creating more seams and corners where the mat could curl. This project is several years old and is still looking great, so I don’t think my concerns with curling are very valid.

  • @Leoji67

    Just applied the mat for my kitchen backsplash. One thing I noticed is the notice on the tube "Applying MusselBound vertically is easiest" so if they didn't have that 3 years ago when you did your video they now recommend Applying to vertically which wasn't hard at all. Maybe you caused some change!

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  3 роки тому +1

      Hello. I’d like to say I did cause change, but I can’t be sure. Others on this thread have berated me for installing the mat incorrectly, but I have my arguments for the way I did it. However, if I do this job again I will certainly install vertically as you suggest. Thanks for the nice comment 👍

  • @R.L.U.
    @R.L.U. 6 років тому +6

    I followed directions to apply vertically. It's much easier and I didn't have to measure anything. I used a Razer blade and just cut slits where the plugs were. No measuring needed.....

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  6 років тому +1

      garydank77 I look at it like this: if you apply vertically you also have to make more cuts and place more sections, but it’s probably easier to fit those sections. Horizontal cuts allow for less cuts, but can be harder to fit. And in hindsight, I think cutting holes for outlets may not be necessary. I have another backsplash project, so I’m going to try the vertical method as you explained and see if that works out better... but I think it might be a 6 in one half dozen in the other sort of situation. Either way, thanks for the comment!

      @@FastFixUA-cam verticle is the way it's supposed to be done :) easy cuts probably about the standard 18" high or in your case, 14" since it looks like you have the backsplash base around the countertops. The same thing when you install wallpaper, it's always installed vertical long side, not horizontal

    How well does the adhesive hold up around stoves and behind refrigerators, where they tend to get warm? I’m worried that much like removing a smart phone display using heat, that this stuff will begin to pull away from the wall. Have you or anyone else have any issues with tiles coming loose around heated appliances, especially stoves? I already installed this stuff but then it hit me that heat might weaken or break the bound. Looking for some feedback. Thanks!!!

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  5 років тому +1

      J Z hello.since this video was published I’m happy to report no issues around heating appliances. I had the same concern, but the titles have shown no sign of peel up from the stove.

    • @donnajones3548
      @donnajones3548 4 роки тому

      It holds great as long as you don’t do this as a rush job and take your time applying pressure to the tape on the wall prior to adding tiles and the again after you apply the tiles. I personally applied pressure much longer than the manufacturer suggested. Worked GREAT!!!

    • @jasonv9202
      @jasonv9202 4 роки тому

      Thanks for the replies. I also can report that so far it’s been holding up nicely and looks beautiful. I had started with real mortar but it was so messy and the grout lines kept filling and I spent way too much time cleaning the grout lines out. When I switched to this stuff it was extremely forgiving and I could easily cut around outlets with ease. I’d highly recommend this stuff. Only downside is that it’s a little pricey when considering larger projects.

    Wanted to say this video was Very helpful in learning the pitfalls of using the product for a “Horizontal “ backsplash. As a result, I decide to solve the issue of not having the double sided film by tacking down Wax Paper (good and cheap) on my work surface, laying out the sections(decided on 2 or 3 foot “horizontal “ sections at a time). Once I measured and cut with a straight edge, the section easily lifted from the wax paper. Applying to clean surface allowed me to remove and adjust as needed for my interlocking tiles. It really would be nice if the manufacturer sold this product in 12x12 sheets, they would fly off the shelves.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  4 роки тому

      The wax paper is a great idea! And I agree. Selling in bigger sections would help. A lot of commenters say to only install vertically, but I see pitfalls in that method too. Maybe I was a little hard on the product, but I stand by it at the same time given that most using it will be first-time installers. Thanks for the tip and the comment 👍

    Why didn't you read the instructions. You are supposed to apply the product vertically. That way you are only dealing with short lengths

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  6 років тому

      Scott McCoubrey hey Scott. I did read the instructions and watched all the UA-cam videos MussleBound provided. I wanted to minimize joints and therefore used larger sections. Using smaller sections would’ve helped to manipulate the pieces a little better, but I don’t think it would’ve made a significant difference. Thanks for the comment.

      25sqft/5hrs= 1hr for every 5sqft. You call that a success? And I wouldn’t say I failed. Just realized the product isn’t as easy to use as advertised. I was able to complete the job and it’s still looking good to this day. Thanks for the comment.

    I agree that having release film on both sides is a better approach and easier to install. However, your project would have gone better had you followed the manufacturer's instructions to install using vertical sections.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the comment, Jim. But, I respectfully disagree. Installing the mat vertically would've required 15 sections. That's 15 cuts plus all the measuring and perfect placement of the mat...15 times. Plus, small sections are harder to place because they want to curl up into a roll even more. I also wanted to minimize the amount of joints as I considered the joints to be weak points that could increase the likelihood of the product peeling back. The way I did it only required 4 or 5 sections (can't remember to be honest) and minimized joints. However, it also had the drawback of placing large sections and filling in the top section with smaller pieces. So, pick your poison I suppose. I have another back-splash project to do and I'm going to try placing the tile vertically to see if it is indeed easier. Take care.

      @Billy Mack, Texas Detective You’re hilarious. If it wasn’t plainly evident in the intro to this whole process, I made it blatantly clear that I’ve never done this before and my experience should be viewed through the lense of a novice. It’s you know-it-alls like you who go on the channel and rip it to shreds. Well good for fucking you. My install has so far stood the test of time and it looks fantastic. I show my mistakes for better or for worse. If my mistakes help someone know what not to do, the the video serves it purpose. Just didn’t think lonely a-holes such as your self would bother writing nonsensical arguments because you were mad. If you want to make meaningless comments, please the floor is yours. Idiot...otherwise, eff off. You’re accomplishing nothing here except making yourself look stupid.

    I watched this checking up on the MusselBound for a backsplashproject and there's a two-word phrase that kept coming back to me, but I'll leave it. I have found when using a different technology it's important to leave all preconceptions of "how it used to be" behind. This stuff is not a layout retentively, remark and re-measure and pre-fit operation like old school backer board. It's wallpaper. Measure for length, cut, stick. My mom taught me 50 years ago your best friend on this type of installation is a X-Acto or sharp box knife. Roll it out over the outlets, cut out around the socket holes, next. The whining in this was unbearable. The goofy dude in the kilt and the This Old House video rendered this video and any "advice" useless. But - thanks for showing us all how not to approach this job.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  4 роки тому

      Hi Phil. Thanks for your thoughts here. It seems like maybe you should've just the two-word phrase and saved yourself some time typing, but because you choose the long route, let me repay your effort. Please read the title of the video. Specifically when it says: "Beginner's Guide." This implies I'm a beginner too and I'm sharing my experiences while using the mat. Good, bad, wrong, whatever. All captured for the UA-cam audience in an effort to educate those wanting to attempt this on their own. They can see my mistakes and successes...my whining as you describe. I find if funny that people like you take the time to pass judgment on videos like these that do really help people. In your case, what not to do. Best of luck my friend. Maybe you can make a video yourself and we can all see how it goes for you. They guys in the Kilts and home shows often do not show the pitfalls and negatives of new products they're being paid to promote. Why would they? Even if they do, they gloss over them and the end user gets a jolt of reality when their project doesn't go to plan which ends up costing time and money. So you can judge this all you want and sit atop whatever authority you think you have, but my backsplash project looks better than I could have paid a pro to do. I'll let the finished product speak for itself. Have a fantastic day.

    So...you took a LONG time making a video of yourself skipping the extremely SHORT time it would have taken to read the instructions (to cut and hang vertically and to cut around outlet when lightly pressed before firm press). Also, in the demo you cut out the outlet on the countertop, but behind you had put up the sheets and have razor cuts in it after putting up...as in the instructions. apparently, you just wanted to be a troll...and a very bad one...for a product you still used but admittedly didn't follow the directions. Why are you trying to mislead people? Truly, what can you gain from lying and being an ignoramus at the same time?
