How to install a tile backsplash (without mortar!) - Bondera Tile Mat Set
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
- Part of finishing out our “modern farmhouse” kitchen was to add a tile backsplash. This is a 5 out 10 on the difficulty scale however, it can be easily accomplished with the right tools and some patience. We used a hexagon shaped tile that is on a 12"x12" mat for our purpose however, any tile up to a 6x6 can be used with the Bondera Tile Mat Set adhesive backer. The total project time on this was about 12 hours from start to finish. Other than actual tile and grout, I have links below to everything you need to complete this project.

I like the part when u said I would like to stay married 🤣🤣
That just seems ten times harder than just using mortar. I’ve used mortar and i could have almost installed it in the time it took to watch this video. Plus with mortar, you have the ability to move the tiles around and not worry about it being perfect the first time
This is just another option for those that don't want to deal with mortar.
This is the perfect video for me as I am considering using the Bondera and was researching it. I stumbled across your video and you are even using the same tile as I selected. The finished product looks great. Can’t wait to see it up in my own kitchen.
That's awesome! Make sure you use a J-roller to make sure the adhesive is secure. If you are using the same tile that I did (marble/heavy) make sure you only put up as much tile as you can grout in a single day. With heavy tile mats, I noticed that the tiles can settle down a little and mess up the spacing if left ungrouted for a day or two.
Awesome voice overlay the Time Lapse Work. Well done Ken!
Thanks!
Helpful! Thanks :)
Thanks! Glad it helped!
Awesome video and great job! Also, I love the explanation of why you didn't show the hood being remounted 🤣
Thanks! The boss would have been none too happy to have seen those clips!
Neat invention. Don't know if its better than the traditional way. I would like to try it once.
I have done this on two projects. Both held up great for years.
I believe it’s a 10 sq ft roll. Package is 12” by 10 ft.
For backsplash install in a laundry room with glass mosaic tile, does the drywall need to have primer added before using the Bondera?
will the bondera work on wall with orange peel texture? Thanks!
Great video. Do the tiles adhere well where the aluminum edging is embedded since you lose a bit of surface area? Thanks.
They have held up well.
very helpful - just wondering what kind of grout you used. You're interesting to listen to and I like how you time-lapsed it all. Now can you make mine happen that fast too, LOL?
Thank you for the compliments! I used epoxy grout for this project since it is more stain resistant.
Hey! Thanks for the video. Curious how this is holding up. Those tile mats seem really interesting. Thank you!
It has been holding up great! I install similar mats in my old house 12 years ago and they held perfectly the whole time we were there.
@@BusyDadsWorkshop that is so awesome. Thanks for sharing!!
We used this for our kitchen backsplash over a year ago. I was wondering if we wanted to change out the backsplash what is the best way to remove the tile and the adhesive paper?
You will have to scrape it. Mostly likely, because of the adhesive, will probably mess up the drywall.
How did you re-install the hood vent over the tile?
I used the same mounting points but longer screws. This vent is hung with two keyway style holes in the top of the vent where the motors are.
My backsplash has been raw drywall a long time and behind the stove is a lot of grease. Planning on painting that with several coats of Kilz. Any other thing you'd recommend?
I would recommend using the oil based Kilz or Zinsser primer to cover the staining.
@@BusyDadsWorkshop Thanks - I would have used the latex one without thinking it through. Thanks for the reminder!
would it have looked bad if you would have used the aluminum edging where the tile meets under the cabinet? and or where the tile meets the counter?
I though about that but decided just to use it where there was an open edge to the tile.
How are they holding up specifically the ones on top of the hood? Planning to install glass tiles up to ceiling and using that mat. Tnx
So far, so good! I also used something similar at our old house and they were in place for more than 10 years.
@@BusyDadsWorkshop did you have to de-grime the wall on top of the hood before you applied the mat?
I didn’t because everything was pretty much new. But… if yours is older, then yes, I would clean it.
Can I use this for tile over? I am trying to avoid hacking existing old tile, to save me time.
Don’t try to save time. Do it properly and get down to the base
Did you have any issues with the marble cracking from using the grinder instead of a wet saw?
Only a few pieces cracked. I used a segmented diamond blade on the grinder.
@@BusyDadsWorkshop okay thanks a lot for the reply!
Do your walls have to be plumb to use this product
Only if you are using large tiles.
Sometimes those sheets hold, sometimes they don't. When they don't you have to then clean it off (easier said than done) and then redo it. All of it. Or, or, you could do it right.
I used these 14yrs ago at our last house and never had an issue with them since. That is why I went with this option.
How is this compared to musselbound?
I would be sure it is pretty similar.
Do you grout the seam between the backsplash and the countertop?
Yes
@@BusyDadsWorkshop better than caulking?
@@danime0199 Depends on the grout you used. He used Epoxy, so it should hold up fairly well. You can also grout caulk, which is made for these kind of areas.
This seems like more work than the traditional way...
In my opinion, it was much faster for me. I didn't have to deal with any mortar to set the tiles at all. Basically, peel and stick. No waiting before grouting.
Can this be used in a shower if you waterproof first?
I wouldn't suggest is for wet areas. However, there are a few manufacturers of this type of product. I would check with them if the backing is wet area approved.
How's this holding up 2 years later??
It is still doing fine. Nothing has come loose and nothing is cracking.
@@BusyDadsWorkshop Nice!! That's what I needed to know
Name of that tile?
We got it at lowes. I believe it was item: 1352923
That marble hexagon tile is dreamy! Considering it for my kitchen. What is the seal-less grout you used? I didn't see it on the list.
@@shirleya4510 It is an all in one grout: www.lowes.com/pd/MAPEI-Ultracolor-Plus-FA-10-lb-Warm-Gray-All-in-One-Grout/1000057513
For the love of the lord use a wet tile saw!!
why would anyone use this, makes the project much more difficult it appears.
