      I own the seagull Merlin (not enough frets ) and also the g and d strum sticks and while they are cool they are very thin sounding and a little hard to balance and play. Yours looks and sounds so much nicer !! 😊

    Love the maple wood! The sound is great. I can't help but think of the old Missouri song, "Everytime I Go to Town the Boys Start Kicking My Dog Around." Dulcimers just have that Hillbilly sound that reminds me of my youth.

    First : that’s awesome that they sent it to you. And second I can’t believe how loud it is unplugged and NOT tinny sounding at all. When you plugged it in it was very impressive. Think about it a lot of folks charge almost that to put a pick up in anything. Lol
    Love it and can’t wait to hear more
    One question. What is the difference between this instrument and the 3 string cigar box guitar (aside from the obvious that the body is not made from a cigar box lol )

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for checking it out. A cigar box guitar is typically tuned G-D-G (i-v-i) & dulcitar is typically tuned D-A-D-D (effectively i-v-i), so they are very similar. It's kinda like comparing a tenor banjo to a mandolin.

      @@musicalmiscellany okay cool cause I tune my dulcimers DAD and I thought that’s what my Merlin is but I hardly play it. So that’s cool that if you can play own you can play the other :)

      @@musicalmiscellany could you tune the dulcitar to GDG? or even tune the 2 strings that are connected, differently from one another?
      I wonder if it is even possible to get a full 4 string version of this were all 4 strings stand on their own. (I don't know what the technical terms are since I have no music knowledge lol)

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Рік тому +1

      @@-jank-willson With a coursed string pair you typically tune them in unison or an octave apart since there's not really a way to fret the strings individually. With the included strings you might be able to tune this one down to C-F-C or up to E-B-E but I don't think you'd get it to a G. You'd have to go to a heavier string gauge for that.

      @@musicalmiscellany Would it be possible, with a little bit of woodworking skills, to take the coursed string pair and 'un-course' them, so that all 4 strings would stand on their own?

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for checking out the video. I'm not sure what you mean by the entire fretboard. It only has about 1 octave worth of frets, so that's probably what you're referencing.

    Why does it sound out of tune? Can you adjust the intonation?

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Рік тому

      It's possible the strings are still stretching as I play. It's a brand new instrument. As far as the intonation, it has a floating bridge so you can angle it slightly but it doesn't have individual saddles. FWIW, I've not noticed it sounding like it's badly intimated in day-to-day playing. Thanks for checking out the vid.

      Correct. The normal turning for a dulcimer is to duplicate the high string in octave, similar to a 12-string guitar or mandolin. Thanks for checking it out.
