This like my other videos is about Tech and behind the scenes of the electrics of running an Off-Grid Electric set-up. Do a few real-world tests looking at how much energy is being used. I hope this can help with understanding how much energy is used and if it might work for them.

My name is Alex Frood, I’m a UK based Freelance Expedition Leader and Outdoor instructor. During a Uk Covid-19 Lockdown I am converting my 2018 Ford Transit Mk8 L3H3 into a full-time Camper.

That was a great pair of videos for electric cooking. I don’t have a van to convert yet, but I’m looking at all electric. I think it makes more sense to just incorporate the one power source.
Glad to hear you found them helpful. I think electric only keeping in a great option when your electrical system can support it. For me reducing the number of fuel sources required in the van to now only diesel and electric is a big plus point for me

Cool video, nice job. I live part-time on my trawler (boat) and have the same issues as you have in your van. I have been using induction on the boat for years. The best way to go.

I installed an internal refillable Gaslow type system for my Voyager hob/oven. But having just bought an air fryer for my daughter’s house, I’m really impressed and will definitely get one for the van. You compared prices but two other factors are also worth thinking about. Weight: I’ve already got a 300ah lithium battery and 1300 victron inverter that could handle the power needs of the air fryer and induction. Having the gas tank and Voyager as-well adds a shedload of weight and money. Air fryers are pretty light!
Insulation: with a gas system you definitely need several holes in the floor to allow any leaking gas to escape. They’re inside cupboard spaces but they do compromise insulation in winter.

Ah talking about weight must not of made this final edit. But now I agree, the gas system is windfall. Be there a cylinder or underslung, deafly not something light. and potentially not comparable in a sense as many people might already have a electrical system as well as a gas system.
As for gas drop out vent you are correct. However, I actually did add some to my van regardless because I use them as ventilation. It keeps the air from getting stale and damp in the bottom of cupboards because I always have my Maxxfan is an extract.
I would absolutely love to have an air fryer in my upcoming build so looking forward to this.

Yes a good video old chap, I'm just setting up my van for an air fryer etc. It's definitely worth going for 24v or even better 48v to reduce the high amperage at 12v, double the voltage half the amps, roughly. 🤔🤔🤔👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. Normally for van builds you would stick to 12 V up to around 3000VA inverter. Higher I would want to go to a higher voltage. I’ll be going for 48V in my next van

Brilliant. 12:30am and I'm gagging for some garlic bread! Great vids so far, especially liked these two. For a while I've been considering a van build for full time living, and I wasn't a fan of gas/lpg idea purely because it's just another power source to run out of/have to find. All electric and diesel (For heat/water) is what I'm hoping to go for.
Still trying to get my head around the solar stuff though...Seen the Victron Multiplus 3000VA inverter/charger and thinking of starting from there.
You can also get half size slow cookers, that run happily on solar electric. Not expensive and perfect foor 1-3 people.
Some of my friends recently showed me some of these.

Great video, I do love the detail you go into.
My opinion on building vans at this current time would be to go electric and diesel. We have large refillable gaslow LPG tanks and it is becoming very difficult to find places to fill up, so much so that on our Motorhome eventually we will slowly swap out gas devices for electric and diesel.
More options the better. With lithium batteries becoming cheaper and LPG becoming harder to find I thought this would be a great option to look into. If I was building another van again I’d personally always to electric now.

You've prompted a rethink on my part.
I've bought and tried a both an induction hob and an air fryer. Cooking a shop bought meat pie in the air fryer for 20 minutes (don't judge, we're all allowed to have a banquet once in a while) and some frozen veg on the hob used about 12% of available power (330Ah lithium through a 3000w inverter fed by 300 watts of solar plus 2 x 30 Ah battery to battery (but I'm static.)) with which I was happy.
Later I did a chicken breast in the AF and veg on the hob but tried both at the same time and it used considerably more power. Hence I was considering getting rid of the air fryer but I'll give it another chance following your trials.
Yeah I’ve always been very happy with the performance and the consumption of the air fryer. I find it a lot more energy efficient than the induction stove and a few other people I know seem to have similar results.
All the best with your testing, I used it throughout the Arctic trip last winter, and no problems at all with energy consumption or using too much

No worries, important too. SOC is really only relevant to me whilst Ah & Wh is more appropriate for comparison to other systems
@@MispronouncedAdventures yeah I have 360ah of agm, so it’s much easier to make a comparison and if I change to lithium ( which is my aim)
I had thought it need to go to 2000va but I might stay smaller and not tempt myself with higher load capability, have you ever wished for a bit more capacity

The air fryer I used in mine was amazing. In comparison with my mini oven much more efficient. Could do with a bigger one for a family of 6.
Yeah I went for a smaller option due to my inverter size. I have soon some larger wattage ones which are a good medium to large pizza size.
The temperature coefficient of resistance is for most metals and alloys positive so increase resistance with temperature. So the current and power usage at constant voltage drops when it gets warmer. So your explanation of the change in power usage is in all likelihood correct.
There is a material with decreased resistance to temperature. Typical semiconductors have that property but also some metallic alloys.
Cheers. you’ve provided the technical details of what’s going on with the dropping wattage of the heating element. Glad to hear that my thoughts maybe were correct but very interesting to actually hear the technical reasoning behind it
On my channel are some air fryer recipes, I have a 3.5 litre capacity 1500W . There are only 4 recipes, but I'm adding more. The best recipe there is for making sausage rolls. They come out so good. Anyway, there is a playlist for the air fryer recipes, so you should find them easily. Love your coverage of this topic and will have a look around your channel. Thanks for sharing.

As I've only got 330amp lead acid batteries, I have to have my engine running whilst using my 1000w air fryer via a 2000w Renogy inverter. If I don't, I have alsorts of alarms going off. But, I love it!!!!
They are good bits of kit! Definitely works using a the engine with a split charge relay if you battery couldn’t handle the draw alone
@Mispronounced Adventures I've got a 40amp Renogy dc to dc, so not too bad at all. Cooked salmon in it the other week. Omg it was delicious. 😆
Great vid mate, the only issue I see here is that it wasn’t cheezy garlic bread 😆 I’m definitely with you on having a bigger and better way of recharging vs a massive battery bank and small panel for example.

Interesting to understand reality of how long in a low solar country you can remain Offgrid without having to turn on the van
Also how long to charge your battery setup from a low point to fully charged using your b2b etc
I glad it been informative. My electrical cooling has worked great. Even in the winter Arctic last winter. It was not even a worry.
Off-grid in the arctic winter I would have to move every heat days ( check out the series if you have time ) but I could happy stay parked up for 2 day in the winter with the heating on, working on the laptop editing and cooking,
B2B wise I can charge at 60-65A. My bank is 390AH. In the arctic my rules was I had to drive the following day double the time I cooked for. 10 minutes cooking would be 20 minutes driving

Vans looking really nice now mate! I think you've done it the right way a good balance between input and battery capacity - as AH in your battery is power you have now and can use now, AH in your solar system/dc-dc is power you could possibly have in the future and is effectively completely useless in the evenings/overnight. It's a balance, but having 1kw of solar and a 100ah battery is probably going to see you running out over and over in the long winter nights methinks.
aye it’s I believe I have good blend between AH Storage and Watt charging options. Whilst I might cook earlier in the day so I can get a little more recharge when the sun is up. Having 300+ ah of storage means it’s too important if I don’t as I’ll just research the follow day.
you are correct only 100ah but with 1000w of solar might see you running low before morning. So a good middle ground of 200-300ah I think is I good option
Thanks really helpful info about the air fryer and its power consumption for off grid use, after it warmed up, seems to average about half its power rating while cooking.
I found on mine after it’s warmed up it’s dropped to about 20w

Thanks for this, I've been looking to move away from gas on my boat and this has convinced me we should get an air fryer. I'll be looking at a lower power model though, maybe a 2L 900W model
I'm running 48v & 12v but have a sailboat and can't charge the 48v from alternator so very dependent on solar
My next van I would be going for a larger air fryer. Overall, with a reasonable size battery bank I don’t find consumption too much of an issue from the air fryer or the induction stove.
there are a few 12 V to 48 V DCDC charges around nowadays
@@MispronouncedAdventuresThis is why I'm finding your channel so interesting. I'm currently using an Orion 48-12|30 to supplement the 12v (200AH) system from my 48v (52v @100AH or 5KWH). I have a Multiplus II 3K & SmartSolar 150|45 with 2x 360W Victron panels and a cerbo gx + 5" screen to manage it all. There are a lot of similarities :D I'm using the 48v to power the inverter and all house electronics and the 12v for Nav and essential systems (Mainly because my Volvo Penta 2003 only produces 28hp and I can't find a 48v alternator it would drive ;)
@@jasonhuxley674 sterling power makes a few different 12v ( or 24v ) to 48v DCDC small to large.
Or via work we have access to “Scotty” units with a 1.5kw or 3kw DCDC chargers which are 12v ( or 24v ) to 48v units

Biggest plus point is that the electricity is free from the sun, whereas gas or LPG you need to pay for to refil.
I completely agree! All of my food cooking in the van, for the last three years has been a free solar energy or excess electric energy from the engine
Love watching your videos, and I'm in the very early stages of my build, I'm pretty confident on most things except the plumbing it scares me to death 😅 😳...I have the bobil van heater system but have no idea how to get water to it from the main tank and then out of the bobil tank to the kitchen and shower taps. 🤦♂️ I've even watched your video but it's way over my head......any chance you're near Southampton and want some work 😝🤦♂️
To fill my hot tank I have a pipe and valve going from my cold system into the top of the tank so when I want to refill it I open the valve

Hi Alex. Great videos and really informative so thanks. We are converting a 4 x 4 truck and have decided to go totally solar & using induction. I was really interested in what you said about going 24V as this has been mentioned to me a few times now and has set me thinking. I was just wondering if you have any further views on it. I would love to know your thoughts.

Main reasons I would consider going 24V is high wattage items at like an induction stove mean my 12v inverter is pulling 120amp at Times. Which is totally fine with all the correct cable sizing are correct but if I was running 24v it would mean that the amps were not as high and therefore cables would not need to be as thick
Alex great video PT 1&2. As a seasoned camper from tent to motorhome I'm pleased you cover all aspects and have a back up mini gas stove to cater for low solar days. I've just installed an induction hob in my kitchen and it's clean, simple and powered by my home solar system. For years we've taken airfryers and used now and then, simple quick and meals fine with ease. Is your van registered as a camper and what's your running weight or gross max weight. My motorhome is now sold but I'm likely to build a van because kids don't come with us now. Anyway keep up the free (which critics forget) videos, I watch daily. You are also very well skilled.

My van is still registered as a van and not a campervan, to change
the V5 wasn’t necessary for my insurance company to insure it as a campervan. Is it still 3.5T fully loaded with me is close to. Long-term I am looking to update it to 3.8T and get a C1 peace of mind
@@MispronouncedAdventures I'm c1 and getting close to that age, medical etc so I'm going to keep under 3.5 for now having had the Moho at 4.4t q great drive not bad on fuel but better for Bavaria and Pyrenees. I like the sound of your insurance company if you don't mind recommending them I will happily give them a call. I was with comfort, they will insure a self build but only for q conversion within 90 days. It will take a wee whilst longer at my pace. Are you meeting J&M and coops again or is it solo time. I've a few places of ww2 interest if you need a place to visit. Anyway let me have your insurance as and when you've a moment, cheers
Yeah Brentacre is the Insurance company I use and there is no limit on the conversion time. I’m back In the uk at the moment as I have work to do. Hopefully meet J&M next time I’m out

I know this is a year old , but just noticed when visting my local Asda they are selling a compact 900 watt version Air Fryer . I think I will get that one as its only cooking for one , me l😅

The most interesting thing in this video is what kind of Victron Energy software was shown on your laptop?
Never saw this before, except maybe when you were installing all electrical.
That the Victron VRM. The part of the Victron Venus OS. Which I have installed on a raspberry pi 3B+ which is free to download . Additionally you can buy the Victron unit called a Cerbo GX for it as well

Because everyone is making videos about Victron inverters, chargers, controllers, but I think no one makes videos about Victron software in combination with Raspberry Pi.
Does the air fryer have filters to keep the smells in?
That might be very model dependent question. Mine doesn’t. I can’t say I know about an other models

Glad it was useful. The Roamer was an example, as I know a few people who have used them and have given good feedback product wise and said that the people who run roamer seems great over the phone. If I was building a van for a clients I’d would be looking at using them.
My batteries are from a electric vehicle so we’re not a good example to use for this hypothetical.

Would a 200ah agm battery run what a hob kettle and air fryer ? Obviously not at the same time.
I’d be concerned it wouldn’t, not because the capacity but for maximum amp output of the better vs voltage sag
Hi Alex, thanks for the insight. Currently at the planning stage of my build and considering going all electric. Using a bespoke electrical or an all in one system. I would welcome your thoughts on electric cooking using an EcoFlow Delta 2 with second battery + 360w of solar. In particular a dual induction hob. I'll be honest the math of working it all out is bit beyond me and there is not much information out there on cooking with the current wave of battery banks atm. Cheers Phil.
Both I think are great options. I have used my induction stove off my Ecoflow River Pro a good few times.
I’m currently trying to get a Delta 2 sent to me as I have a good few ideas I want use for it. Looking at cooking would beone of them
@@MispronouncedAdventures I think a lot more people are considering electric cooking now with the increased availability of reliable lithium systems. In particular a dual induction hob would work with curry night :P Its having the confidence to spend £2000 on an all in one system hoping for simplicity, but more importantly reliability. Conversely a bespoke system is all about the planning and quality of installation, but knowing components can be replaced easily and cheaply should they fail.
Yes, I definitely think the modern all in one systems particular the EcoFlow units are pretty fantastic if I’m honest they are not 100% suited for installation like in a van permanently apart from the EcoFlow power kit, but that is very expensive. Whilst you don’t have the option to replace individual components, if you have an all in one system, many of them, do you have long multi year warranties.
I have also found that induction cooking is pretty reasonable, even on the Arctic van life series where I was living in the extreme North for a month. Never no problems thinking about energy consumption with regards to cooking

What do you reckon man, a 400a/hr system with 2000w inverter enough for induction and air frier? It does seem like it’s a one time cost instead of the ongoing money and wasted time looking for and buying the gas system eh? Liking the Air frier btw, seems like a faster easier option than an oven.
Yeah easy. My system is 390ah and a 1600VA / 1300w inverter. So yes large 2000w inverter would be even better
What are your thoughts about halogen ovens vs air fryers? I know that halogen ovens roast and air fryers fry, but I was wondering if you had any experience with using both at one time or another?
I’m not familiar with the halogen ovens I just had to look it up. It seems in principle they operate in a similar way where the heating part of the unit is only on ( full power / high wattage draw ) for a small duration of the overall cooking time which is what makes them quite efficient for cooking
@@MispronouncedAdventures I rather like them as you can see your food cooking, a bit like a microwave. My mum had one a few years ago and it worked quite well.
what size of battery pack do you have?
At the time of the video 390ah @ 12v / 5kwh.
I list results in my SOC percentage / AH @ 12v used & watt hours used. I really find a dip below 70% at all. 200-300ah @ 12v could easily support electric cooking. But recharge options are more important and overall capacity.
Hi, what inverter are you using, is it the Victron multiplus 12v 80a 2000va inverter charger?
Mine is a Multiplus 12v 1600VA

12v 400ah ( 2 x 200ah ) at the moment of Roamer Xtreme.
I’d say you have plenty for cooking with electric but make sure you also have good recharge options as well

Lol thats a funny statement, if you cook for me, I don’t care how you cook it, with induction or lpg ill still eat it lol
With gas prices and LPG disappearing it won't be long before certain manufactures offer an all electric option the gas free van is coming. But I reckon a min of 500ah and a 3000 watt inverter. Our spec we have 900w solar, 860ah battery bank and a 4000w inverter, and yes it is expensive, but long term we have never used campsite shore power system. Don't forget LPG on tap by end 2024 auto gas is gone, auto gas will changing LPG pumps with EV chargers. Enjoy
