Hello, I am a trauma nurse in France. I am therefore in regular contact with people who are amputated following accidents, mainly motorcycle accidents. In France, we are fortunate that all prostheses are reimbursed, as well as all the accessories necessary for their wearing. Apart from all the work they have to do with us to accept their disability, the next step is for them to learn to walk again with prostheses. I find your explanations extremely clear on their use and your tips and tricks to improve walking comfort very interesting. My patients don't all speak English (we are a little bit lame in France in foreign languages 😉) and I average but I manage, allow me to use your video by putting the subtitles in French? Kisses from Toulouse. France 😘
Thank you for your comments. I am glad you are doing well. I'll be getting a below knee prosthetic in about 6 weeks. Your attitude makes me optimistic about my future. Take care!
That is the best type of socket a Above knee can have. I have been a A.K. for 16 years and have had every type of socket suspension. The Double wall vacuum is the only one that does not piston on ya when you walk.
Find you a Prosthesist that is also a L.A.K. or R.A.K. like I did. I bounced around between 6 of them and they all suck. He can look at how I walk and adjust it to where it feels better and I didn't know I needed it. It's impossible to explain what your feeling ,You have to be a Amputee to understand it.
You mentioned that the amputation of your right leg was through the knee joint (leaving part upper half of your knee), but your prosthetic also has a knee joint. Does this mean that you’re actually taller now than you were pre-amputation? Can you choose how tall you’d like to be post-amputation by the length of the prosthetics?
Sorry for the uber late reply! I'm going to be on here more. To answer your question, yes, because of the knee disartic that means I get to be a bit taller than I was naturally. 😁 I can choose my height, but then my balance becomes an issue.
I'm about to have an above knee amputation in the new year. If you had a choice to have above knee or knee disarticulation amputations on both sides, would you prefer one over the other? Are there any particular reasons for your choice? The prosthetist I saw talked about how it's easier to fit an above knee prosthesis and gave another couple of reasons why surgeons usually chose above knee over knee disarticulation, but there was so much information coming at me I can't remember what they were. Thank you so much for any personal insight you can offer!
You have much more control over the prosthesis with a knee disartic (KD) amputation because the muscles are intact. My right side is the stronger side. A good prosthetist will have no trouble fitting you for a socket with a KD amputation. I didn't have a choice, btw. I was in a coma.
@@OCAmputee thank you for replying. Why you would have more control makes sense. Does having knees bend at slightly different levels affect your balance? Sorry if my comment came off as implying you had a choice. I didn't mean that at all. I guess what I was trying to ask was if you had more issues with your above knee vs knee disartic side that was specifically because of the level of amputation? I'm still kind of panicking a bit about losing so much of my leg and thought your opinion would be really valuable seeing how you've experienced both levels of amputation instead of listening to a prosthetist talk about it, but didn't experience first hand.
The difference knee levels doesn't affect me at all. I don't even notice it! If you can and if there won't be any skin issues I'd def go for the KD option. I see other bilateral AK amputees and am amazed how they walk with two above knee amputations.
@@OCAmputee thank you so much for the advice! I still have to see my surgeon for the pre-op appointment and I'm going to ask him if there's a particular reason he didn't mention a knee disartic.
Excellent explication! Question: Is the right leg knee position lower than where the knee was before the amputation and, assuming both prosthetic knee joints are at the same level, are the lower prosthetic legs shorter than your original forelegs?
Hey one thing I wanted to ask is that do you take your crutches or something similar while travelling for a few days? I have right above knee amputation and have been dreaming about travelling.
Thanks for sharing , one of my leg also above knee amputeed, I 've been wearing prosthetic for 8 years now and get used to it. cause of loosing weight I am thinking to change my socket. I was thinking about MAS socket but thinking it will be still painful some part. I am interested can I wear single wall socket "eco seal liner"? I don't have knee or any bone from it, but it is also a little longer than your left leg. can you give me some suggestion of these sockets and the prices? I am a teacher ,I have to sit and walk a lot , so waiting for your answers. if anybody else have some suggestions ,I will be happy too, thanks
Could anyone tell me what type of the leg did you have for the first time? When should or know when to get a better leg? Did everyone have a basic leg? How does it look like? Please let me know, thank you
I just what to know, how much those legs ( microprocessor) cost?? how long its take to start walking again... etc.. you can reach me in you tube …. amputado bilateral Leonardo rodriguez
It took me about a year to become really proficient with them. And five years since your comment I'm so much better. It all comes to walking every day for at least an hour. The more you walk, the better you'll become.
When you first start wearing them yes for about 6 months. Then your body starting sweating less. At least mine did .. Secret Spray deodorant for women cuts down on sweating a ton and it don't irritate, That was the only type of spray that worked.
Hey sweetie I am a new amputee with the left leg above knee I just started to where my prosthetic leg it's a old-fashioned one but I'm not sure my stump sometimes swells so it's hard for me to maneuver I haven't been trained yet by a physical therapist I just been going to my prostitute prostitute I don't know how you pronounce it but prosthetic man and I'm not comfortable with it so if there's any advice you can give me I'll have to deal with it please contact me thank you

Yep, it's a great system for me too.
The echo liner looks really good, I use the Ossur iceross 5 seal liner with the infinite socket - love your channel 😍
Thanks a lot. I love the echo liner!
You make it look so easy!
I put in a lot of work behind the scenes. 😁

And yes I know - I have it as well
Can you link to your componentry? I'm sure you have high tech gear companies to what is given by hospital
Sure! Google the C-leg by Ottobock for the knees and Proteor Kinterra for the feet.
it must be an awesome feeling to be an amputee
Not really. 🤨
Question. My AK stump really hurts, even after 2 years. It’s hard to walk and I’m so frustrated. My prosthetic stays on by vacuum. Any suggestions?
Is it the socket that's causing your stump to hurt? If so, talk to your prosthetist about it and see what solution(s) they come up with to fix it.

Hola saludos del estado de México, quisiera saber si para iniciar a caminar tuvo que empezar con stubbies
Sí, tuve que empezar con los rechonchos. Me facilitaron volver a aprender mi equilibrio.
Excellent explication! Question: Is the right leg knee position lower than where the knee was before the amputation and, assuming both prosthetic knee joints are at the same level, are the lower prosthetic legs shorter than your original forelegs?
My limb lengths are different because I caught an infection and the doctors had to cut higher to stop it from spreading. I'm a bit taller now. 😁
Hey one thing I wanted to ask is that do you take your crutches or something similar while travelling for a few days? I have right above knee amputation and have been dreaming about travelling.
I don't own a pair of crutches, never used them. 😊

Just got my new leg today..above knee
..it is really hard to do anything how long does it take to learn..
Depends on you. I've been an amputee for 7 years now. I've had lots of practice! You need to put in the hard work if you want to see results.

What can of socks to wear
They are usually prosthetic socks, designed for use with your prosthesis. It's best to ask your prosthetist.
How do you walk I have no knee so it doesn't bend and my balance is bad so I need walker asist
Check out my other walking vids on my channel to see how I walk. 🙂

Do the liners trap moisture, like sweat?
