Obviously Freddie Mercury and Brian May had been very influenced by these kind of choir harmonies! Some years after they had created a lot of songs with layers and layers of voice harmonies!
So Lennon is probably my favorite. But I feel like Paul McCartney is CRIMINALLY underrated. His singing, harmonies, bass playing, musical sensibilities, and just natural talent were astonishing. He's even an underrated writer. Macca is the man and the only person who could even compete with Lennon!
Yes they complimented eachother so much as did George vocally on guitar and with his songwriting too. Paul was the driving force behind the group too and mega talented. John and Paul have different and distinct styles for sure.

What's still remarkable to me about the Beatles is how they came up with such completely different songs and still managed to maintain their distinct Beatles sound. When you heard a new Beatles song, you almost instinctively knew it was them. A rare group that made such a creatively historical imprint to the world of music that's still admired and appreciated to this day.
The Beatles were the best hands down. The songs are wonderful, tight, no excess material, creative and wonderful melody, great singing, well performed and crafted. They set the standard and no one has been able to match it since, sure some bands play better instrumentally, are more complex and so on but for a tight 3 minute interesting and creative pop rock song no one surpasses the Beatles,
@beatle pete dude youre not the only one who is a musician..the beatles followed a richtradition of harmony based music..all those 50's barbershop/do wop bands were phenomenal. The difference. The beatles had great songs..iconic ones...There harmonising is good but i'd say if many musicians were presented with those melodies, they could harmonise equally well. Granted they had great voices but sometimes the blend was just..good..they are not the best harmony group of all time. Then ig you want to go further back, there were the great choral pieces which are exquistwely written...i've harmonised in a group since i was 15 and sung in choirs since 8....It's just following diferent lines and counter harmonies...the beatles had their own characther as musicians and songwriters..they grew up listening and harmonising those r and b bands and just followed that really. They happened to be geniuses at song writing..but their harmonies serve the songs and are not the cutting edge of all harmonies..so many examples in pop

The imperfections make the song so charming...it's like being a fly on the wall listening to them warts and all and in spite of the falsetto getting a little out of pitch and the looseness at times their brilliance shines through. I always noticed it even in the full track but it never stopped me from loving the song.

The three of them always seemed to reinvent their approach to harmonies. From 'This Boy' to 'Because', there was no mistaking it was the Beatles but they differed their techniques. There is no mistaking a Beach Boy song, for instance, because their formula was almost set in stone. However, John, Paul and George could vary their style to fit a mood. Quite remarkable & why they are always a breath of fresh air to the ear.
Who sings what puzzles: In the intro I believe it's Harrison singing the lowest part, Lennon the middle and highest is McCartney. I think McCartney and Lennon sing the second and third verse in close harmony, McCartney higher, Lennon lower. Same thing with the coda. McCartney doubletracks second and maybe the third chorus. Lennon sings the falsetto countermelody in the first verse, maybe doubletracking those harmonies. He also sings countermelody in the chorus, again doubletracking. Lennon sings the first, longer "better" in the bridge, McCartney singing the second and third.
I love it too. It's buried in the mix but it's a great way to resolve the ending. Too bad they didn't let this one line stand alone then come back with the instruments

I'm sure they didn't need any other heat source in the control room of Studio 2 during the chilly English nights with all those tubes glowing. That's a million dollars in gear, at LEAST. Amazing.
They had written that this song was going to be a throw-out. They were giving up on it. All the vocal arrangements and instrumentation finally saved it, and made it a true original.
John, Paul, and George enjoyed the ability to sing close harmony together. It didn't occur to them to take harmonizing to the level that The Beach Boys did, but they had a keen sense to fit their ability to their music very well. In short, they did what was right for each song where harmony was needed.
