I'm impressed the orchestra librarian was able to get all the sheet music penned by so many different arrangers. That must have been an intense project. Wonderful hearing it all together.
Having just listened to Wilhelm Kempff's fine interpretation of Carnaval, I couldn't help thinking of Chopin's opinion that Carnaval was 'not music at all'. Chopin's piano music was highly polished and refined, and Schumann's earlier pieces often seem crude and dashed-off, despite their abundance of musical ideas. This orchestration, originally prepared for the Ballets Russes to perform to Fokine's choreography, fleshes out Schumann's thin piano textures beautifully. Schumann really missed his calling as a ballet composer!
If you find Schumann's piano textures thin (I don't) you'd probably enjoy Arrau's or Rubinstein's recordings more than Kempff's, who had a gift for transparent textures. Brahms said most German pianists played his music too heavily. I think he would've been very pleased to hear Kempff's beautifully clear approach.
@@sappallow Don't make this about the performer. I'm referring to Schumann's limitations as a beginning composer, which he overcame later on. Chopin was one of those rare composers (like Ravel) who developed a highly polished style in his teens. Schumann was a quick learner, but his early works - like those of most composers -- were rough around the edges.

Espressive is very full, different than Originale.

... bemerkenswertes Ballett-Arrangement; temperamentvoll von Irving und dem Philharmonia London ausgeführt
