I have a Lansky, Spyderco, and a Worksharp. I’m giving the Lansky to my nephew, and keeping the other two. Once I learned how to use the Worksharp, I was able to put some nice edges down. My best knives only see the Spyderco. One slip with the Worksharp, you can booger up a sweet blade really quick.
I love my rex 45 shaman! Such a beast of a knife and the rex 45 has gathered some beautiful colouring in it after tons of use. Getting some micarta scales to age with it
I never did jump on the Spyderco bandwagon, because I did not like the shape of the blades, for the most part. Then I see knifes like this one, and the Manix 2. It got me to looking at them, and realize they are very nice knives. My next purchase will be a Manix 2 XL.
@@mikafoxx2717 I got the Manix 2 XL. I really like it, and carry it often. Now I’ll buy a Spyderco, before a Benchmade. Strider has great heat treat as well.
Recently lost my s30v shaman, as I was looking for another shaman I stumbled upon a brand new rex45 shaman in a knife store. Somehow ended up there and got overlooked all this time. Still at original price too. 😀
Hello from Kansas too (KC area)! Just picked one up on the secondary market, really excited to try out the Shaman. Was waiting for a sprint run but came across a like new one without a ridiculous mark up. Recently got back into knives and caught a couple of your vids... Good stuff man, keep up the good work.
I really enjoyed this heavy use report. I saw the pic on ig, rough! Beastly blade. I don't like orange scales on knives but this burnt orange is totally cool.
I wanted to know if it was sharper on the non stonewashed versions, and if there were any upgrades. I have been avoiding m4 and rex45 out of my own needs and uses - might be a more interesting steel than I originally imagined. Whenever I see tool steel, I think of my drawers of hammers and screwdrivers and and wonder what makes the steel better than my 1095 which was made to sharpen. Anything I sharpen that isn’t 1095, takes a little bit of slow driving before I hit the freeway. I just didn’t like the idea of having to sharpen for so long- I sharpen Bohler constantly and haven’t had a problem with it yet, but I haven’t had any knicks, rolls, or holes made in the edge. I love my Bohler Blades, more than any other steel that I have, and I came into it, return to collect all steel types I could. This gives me more confidence about sharpening tool steel- I just hate having to clean my blade so often, when I try to use it often, and for any little excuse I can find. For a guy who opens his bags of chips with a knife, I think I should be weary about what steels I use, because I keep them oiled and I still get spots if I don’t clean any staining steel like d2 right away. I also live on the California coast, so having any kind of knife that will stain, will definitely staying within a couple days. I never watch reviews of the same knife, with just a different blade steel because you can kind of put that review together in your head. But this was good to get some extra insight and it wasn’t just the same review with you telling us it’s a different steel type. Sometimes I feel like I want my money back when all the information that I could’ve gotten from a video came directly from the title screen and there was nothing else added. Thanks for sharing
Cruwear is currently the “best steel on the market” imo. Easy to sharpen, takes a hair obliterating edge, feels nice and buttery on the stones, good retention, good toughness, can be stropped back to life. If you’re a freehand sharpener (which, let’s face it, *every* knife fan should be), no other super steel comes close, imo. K390 and the rex steels are great, too...they’re just a different kind of great. Nevertheless, cruwear is king. No other steel makes me half as happy.
@@optimuscrime608 Wait, what? Spyderco treats their cruwear in the 61-62 range which is widely regarded to be its sweet spot...at least in all the reputable circles I follow. I’m sure benchmade does the same. My cruwear stuff has been phenomenal...I don’t know what else you could *possibly* be looking for unless it’s a model that neither company is offering...
I live. In an oceanside town. I use my knives, but I also take care of them. Ill take tough, edge retention over stainless every day of the week. Use it, wipe it, move on.
I would LOVE to own a Rex45. I own a MKT Genesis T and multiple Hinderers but the Sypdie junkies buy out sprint runs in a matter of minutes.....literally. Lol
That's the thing about sprint runs I don't like. The regular shaman is already in my upper price range that I can afford. Then you can't get one of these even if you wanted to because they get sold out in minutes!
I was lucky enough to get a rex45 Shaman with the rosewood scales - Knife Center sprint. Can anyone recommend a sharpening stone for maintenance? I prefer freehand sharpening over jig/angle assisted sharpening systems.

What kind if sharpener do you reccomend? I was going to purchase the KME, deluxe package

Aawesome, thanks brother
I've got a basic Shaman and it's become my favorite in my collection. That used to be my Para Military 2 in S110V.

I'm glad you got to use it hard. And no worries on the rolls, I was going to throw it on the KME and give it a nice new edge anyway.
😊👍 thanks again!!

Spiderco is probably one of the only companies you can rely on a great heat treatment. Though Buck Bos heat treatment is also great.

Strider has great heat treat as well.
I love the unusually sharp jimping on all the REX-45 blades. Like sharp scalloping on a 1911 that makes loading easier.
I really like that you review knives that most of is actually buy instead of these 1 off customs some of the other guys do.

What was the og price? I can’t find it and I’m currently bidding on one of these well over msrp
A few of these were restocked on Spyderco’s site yesterday. I was lucky enough to get one with 50% off as a veteran!

This or 15 v is what I want my shamen in. 💯
I’m digging this one!
Nice Job! Any color but "burnt orange!"

Hey Metal, I traded one of my older Ultratechs for a Shamen, and I got to say it has become one of my favorites, I either carry it or my ZT 308
Want a shaman so bad
Rex 45 is the best steel on the market right now. It’s insane. Spyderco’s best steel release of all time, hands down
How does it compare to M4 and Cruwear?

@@manifestgtr Cruwear is ok. Not even close to Rex45 though. The problem is no one can do it right. Spyderco and benchmades cruwear blows.

Don't mean to be soliciting in the comment section but I have one for 140 bnib shipped
Rex45 for the win!!!!!! Have a good one!

Any interest in reviewing a para 3 lightweight it Rex 45?
Anyone have a good oil for this blade? Just picked up the rosewood one.
I would like spyderco to take a page out of the strider handbook. Get rid of the jimping on the finger choil. Smooth choil is the way to go
yeah on the bright side though spyderco has comfortable jimping unlike some companies
Skinny scales and lynch clip with nub delete makes the shaman godly
The factory edge is a poor indication of how a steel will perform as you probably already know.
True, though it only gets better. So if he’s impressed with a factory edge than that’s a strong endorsement. It’s more if something performs poorly
Any chance they’ll make a shaman in maxamet?
I sure hope so
Are we talking rusty, or just patina?
Patina if you keep it dry. Rust if you put it away wet but not easily. I’ve been using Rex 45 for about a year now and I’m very happy with it.
My spouse is from Hill City.
👍
Metal complex during his rant, says it holds a better edge than m4
And you can set it at 16 degrees
And always dlc rex
These not burnt orange...
Orange, burnt orange, sunset orange, mandarin orange.... whatever. Its orange.
