My take on Age of Ultron is that it’s the only avengers movie we will ever get where the original team is assembled and functional the whole movie. It’s not perfect but it’s delightful
I wanted to walk out of ultron and have never watched it again. I hated it. I also hate James Spader so that doesn’t help. A wise cracking smarmy Ultron just didn’t sit right
I think Whedons movies were probably the ones that best nailed the team dynamic and seeing all the characters personalities play off each other. The party scene in AOU where they try to lift Thors hammer, and the argument on the helicarrier when they are being influenced by Loki's sceptre are great examples
@@dwoodstwinCivil War is the real Avengers 2, we gotta stop pretending.
@dwoodstwin I did walkout of thor 3. I liked thor being a little more serious, felt like watittie saw guardins and said, "I'll just do that".
@@johnmiltner9842 I’ve seen like 15 mins of Thor 4. I saw all I needed to see.
This ranking video is the next Captain America The Winter Soldier
Truly the Captain America: The Winter Soldier of ranking videos.
Hot take, too hot, OW!
Winder*
@@connorbabcock5498I was disappointed with the Falcon and the Winder Soldier
Some would say the winter solider is the Dark Souls of MCU movies.
I loved Age of Ultron when it came out, but I expected it to be much darker. I like when ultron starts off menacing and then just starts making quips. I like to think that when he accessed the Internet, he just watched a lot of Norm Macdonald and tried to make his own national tragedy in sokovia 😂
iron man 3 is my favourite of all the three. it puts tony out of his comfort zone and highlights his brilliance. also dealing with somewhat accurate portrayal of anxiety which i personally resonated with. i think it's also a fun movie overall. i will never get the hate for iron man 3.
He walked through blood and bone in the streets of Sokovia looking for his brother…
He was in northern wakanda at the time
@@nitish.anand99 same, felt funny without trying/doing the Marvel humour, just shouldn't have had that whole "IM THE REAAAAAAAL MANDARIN" like I'm fine with him being a British actor/drunk who the 10 rings hired to be the face behind their organization (in case the FBI, CIA, SHIELD etc killed him)
@@nitish.anand99 but the overcoming PTSD in like 5 days is kinda wild should've had a scene where he got prescribed valium or xanax or idk at least something, would make it make a lot more sense
🤣
Winter Soldier is legitimately the only Marvel movie I've rewatched as just a great movie, not a marathon or like it's "on TV so I guess I'll watch while I do the ironing" but like, sat down, turned it on, sat down and just be riveted and excited the whole way thru.
It’s weird I love the movie and adore its pacing but I really don’t like Cap as a character by himself.
I might be the only person whose least favourite Captain America movie is that one. It's great, but it feels emotionally pedestrian compared to Civil War and The First Avenger. I think those movies have a lot more of an emotional tilt to them.
Winter Soldier
Iron man
Ragnarok
Infinity War
Those are the ones I watch just as good movies.
When people are saying that the MCU is failing because people are tired of superhero movies, I just point to The Winter Soldier. My family rewatched this one (and Iron Man, and Avengers) multiple times during the pandemic. The recent Marvel movies are just straight up lower quality than what has come before. If they actually put some effort in (The Batman, Guardians 3, Spider-verse), people will go to see it.
Calling Asgard "the planet of the Thor people" and comparing them to space Amish😂
Thor 2 manages to waste Christopher Eccleston
To be fair every Thor movie has the worst usage of the villian actor, worst Tom Hiddleston Loki performance, Eccleston was a waste, Blanchett did nothing but throw quips and CGI knives, and Bale showed up to the wrong movie.
@@fadingstarlight8 counterpoint: Blanchett SERVED
Was not expecting a Nice Guys gut punch so early
3:52 Holy crap, just now realized this is the same actor as Melvin Potter in Daredevil.
Those characters are so categorically different despite both being big tall muscle guys.
Melvin gets the short end of the stick. Dude was put in a bad situation because of Fisk. Leave him be.
Totally agree on Jessica Jones S1 being the best one, the other seasons were never going to hold up
I think it's sophomore album syndrome (which Maso has talked about before). Melissa Rosenberg had been trying to make a Jessica Jones TV series since 2010 and threw her all into it. I guess she just didn't have enough material for the rest of it comparably.
I never ended up watching the later seasons of Jessica Jones, but now I do wonder: after all the business with Purple Man, what can you possibly do with Jessica Jones? Not only in the show, but in the comics as well. Just more private eye adventures?
The villain REALLY helps with that show as well. By far one of the best in the entire MCU, and completely horrifying.
I thought you were being overly harsh about Ironman 3, but I realized I've never made it through the whole movie despite multiple attempts.
you’ve been to stupid school and gotten an A+!!!!!!!!!!
Iron-man was worse than 2 by a long shot
I still won't ever get the dislike for Iron man 3, I enjoy it every time. But then I clearly have different views from many as I seem to also like the Ant-Man movies a lot more than most.
I don't mind the fake mandarin played by Ben Kingsley, my main complaint was the very boring and generic replacement villain played by Guy Pearce
@@phattiger1506Same here. My opinion is moot because I like eternals
Nobody tell James that Agents of SHIELD should’ve been in this video and Jessica Jones should be in the next one based on the timeline he presented.
AoS will always be the best series in the MCU (it's still canon in my eyes) despite a shaky first half to season 1.
It had the best team, the best villains, and the best storyline, and the best world building (that the films chose to ignore).
I think Age Of Ultron is the absolute perfect distillation of a comic trade paperback in film. It’s got stakes and humor, and it’s probably my go-to MCU film if I don’t specifically want to a certain Phase or movie about a certain character.
But F tier obviously.
i just wish ultron was a more threatening villain instead of being as quippy as the good guys.
I've gone back and revisited it too recently. I had ignored it for years after seeing it because, I don't know, I thought it hit differently so I wrote it off. But yeah, it's good. Good interactions between the team, some good quotable lines from Tony, Banner, and Ultron, the birth of Vision scene, and the 3rd act is bombastic and what you'd want from a comic book movie
I think it's just the right amount of self-aware over how silly it is. ❤
@@imarobobot8795 A big reason I love Age Of Ultron is it's the *only* proper Avengers-do-a-mission/take-on-a-bad-guy entry in the entire series. It's like a great Saturday morning cartoon adventure episode, and I didn't appreciate that on the theatre.
It has its clunky flaws, but for me they're very easy to overlook. Joss is deservedly sidelined these days, but I feel he's a great loss to genre film and TV. The MCU was never as good as when Joss, James Gunn, and the Russo's were firing on all cylinders.
Very fun tier list. Please sing more Alanis parody songs.
Holy blap, it's Comics Tropes and you're our host Chris
I honestly think Iron Man 3 is so fun. Yeah its kinda dumb in a few spots but I think a lot of these movies are. The plane rescue scene is the best iron man scene in his trilogy
The plane scene is one the best MCU scenes period.
I cannot remember that scene at all
@@patrickswayze3086 check it out! It’s so cool and creative. They went full Tom Cruise with professional skydivers to film it
A few years ago I did something similar to this on my own, and I realized that phase 2 might be my favorite phase. Which seems crazy to say, but there are some strong bits here. Winter soldier, and guardians are both in my top 5 MCU of all time so well done phase 2, you’ve done it again.
Phase 3 is my fave I think, the first half especially (pre-Infinity War): Civil War, Guardians 2, Black Panther, Thor Ragnarok and Spiderman: Homecoming.
They never said 'A for Ant-Man'.
That bothers me.
It's like 10,000 Spoons when all you need is a Wife.
I'd also give credit to GotG for being the best stand-alone movie in the MCU. No real dependency on a larger story, no cameos from pre-existing movies and all the reference to a story outside it feels more like the world-building done in a first movie of a series rather than a typical shared universe movie.
I mean it does Thanos and the Infinity Stones it just doesn’t do a “The game is on”
Either that or first Iron Man.
Dark world over iron man 3 is...wild to say the least
Iron Man 3 is at least fun, Dark World is crippled by the Jane Foster romance being dull.
IM3 is one of the worst movies in the MCU
Big shout out to the editors. The scenes were hilarious icing on the commentary.
I normally don't care for tier lists but James and Maso make them entertaining.
I have been waiting on this since you guys posted the Phase 1 video. Thanks 😩😅🙏🏽🤣
A cricket reference without Warney?
I expect a formal apology
9:25 "It really felt different than the stuff they were doing on ABC television"
(shows footage of The Flash on the CW)
editor is nailing it
The first season of Agent Carter is like an S-tier, but the second season is like a D-tier and the last episode borders on F, so B splits the difference well enough. Fun fact, the first season showrunners, Tara Butters and Michelle Fazekas went on to create Gen V and previously also ran the super underrated Omar Epps and Kurtwood Smith show Resurrection.
Why was the Flash being displayed when talking about ABC television? James and Mason were referring to Agents of Shield, Agent Carter etc., which were broadcast on that network.
I worked on an A and an S rank in your tier list😅 Glad you liked them😊
Daredevil is and always will be S Tier
I thought for a second they were going to put it in A instead of S, and I was preparing to throw my phone across the room
Ey, that's literally the first place I ever saw some love for Ant Man 1! I think it's a very solid, fun movie and it's definetly amongst my favorite in the MCU.
yo james, finish daredevil season 3, its incredible
I want a video where Mason explains the difference between ranking things and a tier list. Because I have no idea what the difference is.
A tier list ranking the tiers
A tier list is putting winter soldier, guardians, and daredevil in S tier. Ranking is putting winter soldier 1st, daredevil 2nd and guardians 3rd.
Rankings are Rodneys. Tier lists are Blue Harvest jokes. Guess the Reviews are the Joker. Does that help?
knowing "captain america : the winter soldier" exists and knowing how terrible 2 out of 3 iron man movies are, i dont know how could there be people who likes iron man more than captain america. captain america is the "captain america : the winter soldier" of mcu characters.
Captain america is a one dimensional character is probably why
@@Dogtriohe's also extremely problematic
@@TheMightofDabAnd hypocritical to the absolute extreme.
Robot suit go pow pow
@@TheMightofDab and Iron Man, creator of most of the MCU villains isn't? sure...
All those "Listen" gave me Ocarina of Time flashbacks.
It makes me happy when people recognize The Winter Soldier as one of the best MCU films in the franchise
James, you've gotta watch Daredevil Season 3. It's not just the strongest season of the show, it's one of the best seasons of any TV show.
I can't believe he hasn't finished it. As you said, it's one of the finest pieces of television. Ever. I think about it all the time.
@@ellaisplotting I've watched it twice lol. It's too good.
@@ChadTheGoose same! I've got a third watch coming up that's literally just of S3 😆 it really is too good!
Gregg Turkington, now that's a cameo
When The Avengers are hanging out, do you reckon Vision ever says: "Hey, I used to be the Human Torch!"
And then Captain America replies: "Hey, so did I!"
(This is a joke that almost makes sense.)
When was Vison Human Torch?
@@nza1804 that's his origin in the comics, his body was originally the body of the android version of human torch from the 40s. 🩷
@@nza1804this question almost makes sense too.
@@nza1804 The original human torch from the 40s is what they used as Visions body i think?
@nza1804 comic Vision was built off the template of the original human torch (not the F4 one), which was an android superhero in the 1940s in the comics. He also cameoed in the first Captain America movie
This phase was such a mess given it was leading to Ultron and nearly every movie could have had a hand in creating it. From Pym particles being key to the miniaturization needed to Zola polluting the information being fed to Ultron leading to his villain turn. Instead it was an early sign of Disney getting high on their own press and setting release dates without the stories locked down. My only hope for Phase 5 is that Phase 3 rescued so much following Phase 2.
The first GOTG was, in my opinion, the real tipping point of the MCU. At the time, it felt like a big gamble and when that worked, I knew they were going to dominate for the rest of the decade.
Iron Man 3 is my favourite MCU movie. Honestly, the only one I really like.
🙌🙌🙌
You and I have known each other for a long time. I named my son Ranger Jack Walker after you. We were supposed to get old and live in the same nursing home, together.
But this? This i cannot accept.
You are dead to me.
@@timothylewis2527 I feel like your son is gonna have a lot of questions, unless he's also dead to you, spirituality or/and physically
Iron Man 3 was the second of these movies I saw, and it was one of the only ones I saw multiple times. I remember being disappointed by it because it was less fun than Avengers.
Hell yeah more The Nice Guys praise!!!
Mason you’re not the only one who likes Thor: The dark world….my dad absolutely loves it
That footage of maso driving a tram is really good
Once we get through the phases I would love a list of all the pre MCU marvel movies.
I've tried watching Thor: The Dark World twice and I still haven't managed it.
"Too dumb, didn't finish."
I like funny Thor which is what you should get when you pass Norse mythology through Shakespeare after drinking a lot of alcohol.
I think the Thor movies made the massive mistake of focusing on Jane rather having have fun cosmic adventures.
Let’s tier this content a new one!
I want no other movie more than I want a The Nice Guys sequel but James is right, it’s never going to happen. 😭
I think if the 3rd act was stronger in Iron Man 3 it would be great. Didn’t love the showdown with Killian and if it were better executed, I think this movie would be remembered as a great character study of a post battle Tony Stark.
Exactly this! When I rewatch it the third act is where I tune out, but the rest is 👌👌👌!
holy shit I did NOT expect Mason to go on a Alanis Morisette riff LMFAOOOO
I liked this video, apart from the rankings you made for each movie and your opinions on them… but apart from that, great
The alanis morriesette ad lib got me lmaooo
I'd love you guys to review the superhero show 'Powers' with Sharlto Copley!
So here for the Nice Guys love
Fun fact, Gosling's character's daughter is played by the same actress who was in the MCU Spider-man movies playing Betty Brant.
It's all connected...
Winter Soldier's theme Taking A Stand is a personal MCU favorite
Nick Maso you have slain me with that Alanis goof
Conceptually, I love Iron Man 3. What is Tony without a suit? He's still a hero, he's still willing to put himself in danger to save others. The execution was just not there.
I always quite liked Thor the Dark World and I'd forgotten that I'm not the only one, good pick Maso.
You put Thor 2 over iron man 3 is a crime and the cops are.coming too your house /s
Really no need for the s
I second
Iron Man 3 is one of the best MCU movies, don’t @ me. Challenges the Tony Stark character like never before, and in contrast to the rest of the series has a very unique vibe
Exactly this!!!
Nah
that ending cricket sledge tho
Any-Man and the Wasp is another A tier. One of the best MCU soundtracks too.
I got a Daredevil 4 disc set on eBay, lol 😊 (season three)
Yes! Finally some love for Thor: The Dark World! My favorite Thor movie, it’s very epic fantasy and just fun.
Let's Tier it up boys!
Ant-Man should be ranked as 5 bags of popcorn
with actors like gregg turkington in it,you cant lose!
The disrespect for Iron Man 3 is disgusting, putting Thor: The Dark World above it is further salt in the wound and should be considered a crime, James and Maso should be in jail for that one.
Tier jail
Tears for tiers
Honestly guys, you ranked these pretty much perfectly. I would have ranked it exactly the same, except for maybe Age of Ultron, which I would have put a little bit lower. It just did not flow as well as the first one. I mean, remember those Ragnarok teasing scenes they put in it? I don't know, kinda felt out of place in that movie.
I also like dark world
Mr Sunday movies doing Marvel As my favourite MCU hero says “What a day!”
I can’t believe it. I actually agree 100% 😨
“Ironically” my like is all for the 12 minute mark!
This is probably the closest I agree with y’all’s ranking ever!
I remember not liking “the winter soldier” because it was spoiled for me by the internet, and only liking season one of Jesica jones. But not really liking all the other Netflix stuff
The Nice Guys is one of my favorite movies. I’d love a sequel. Also, i genuinely like Thor The Dark World too, I don’t think it deserves the hate it gets because it’s fun imo. Also, also, Age of Ultron is still my favorite MCU movie to this day
Once you’ve finished phase 4 you could do a ranking of marvel movies that aren’t in the MCU
that Jarvis actor was in a space movie with Naomi Rapace
I also only have watched the first season of Agent Carter. I also thought it was pretty good.
I've watched both, and have a deep abiding love for it.
They should make an Avengers TV show in the X-Men 97 universe and do stories like Age of Ultron or Civil War in an actual long form way, since I don't think you could have ever done it full Justice in the movies.
Avengers assemble isn't the worst. Plus they gave all of the infinity stones individual purpose. Best iteration of Thor we've gotten outside of the comics too!
But they'd be crazy not to do a joined universe of the fox animations! And god knows they've all crossed over especially on spider-man with Frank castle, cap and the six, F4, stark and rhodey, morbius, blade and the x-men!
I love Iron Man 3 more than most of my family members but i get it
If you make enough tier lists you can then tier list your tier lists, I expect all ad revenue from that video when you inevitably make it because it’s such a smart idea
At the end of the day, everything before 2020 was gold
James please watch daredevil season 3, it’s so good
OKAY. Okay okay relax. The Berlin Wall falling is slightly better for humanity than the winter soldier.
After you rank all of the mcu phases you should rank all of the S Tier projects from the previous phases
Thor: The Dark World is basically the same story as The Avengers. Space invaders attacking a world city with a "portal" that needs to be closed (Alignment of the nine realms). But it is basically Thor by him self.
hey what do you call those ice cream sandwiches but the bread is two chocolate chip cookies
Iron man 3, the tony PTSD plot was fantastic. The villain plot is dumb. Not the mandarin and all, that was cool, but exploding plants is terrible
Mad respect for mentioning Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
I loved age of ultron all ya'll be hating. For shame
idk I kinda like how Iron Man 3 is just a whole movie of Tony Stark being on the backfoot, and ends with him going all out just so he can start from 0
I'm with Mason: I like Dark World, too. 😊
James loves a cheeky rank, he’ll rank himself silly
I think ant man losing Edgar Wrights creative vision really kept it from breaking out as its own standalone IP.
Daredevil and punisher are my 2 favorite shows
When he says the ABC television, what he means is Agents of Shield and Agent Carter. The Flash was a CW show.
I think there’s a lot to like about AoU but it gets a little convoluted and long in the tooth by act 3 so I don’t think it’s as tight or strong as Avengers 1
Ranking MCU movies. What a life.
Age of Ultron will forever be scarred by its marketing.
I honestly didn't know there were 3 seasons of Jessica Jones, having only watched the first.
The last one was pretty bad
Worst part about Age of Ultron is they made Ultron the comedy relief and it made him so hard to take serious
