I've got my non-buddhist/atheist partner to read the same book that Zong Rinpoche recommended - "Beyond Religion" by HH Dalai Lama, it's a great and concise book that reminds the universe about the importance of moral ethics and inner values, rather than external material aspects of life.
I was so happy and fortunate to hear all this from a Lharampa Geshe of Rinpoche's standing, especially without the necessity of it all being translated. Also a big thank you Gaden Shartse Dro-Phen Ling (GSDPL), Singapore for organising the class and also preparing and uploading the video.
Regarding the first question, I can't say I know the answer, but in general, if a person wants to study in one of the big three Monasteries in Sth India in their next life then we need to possess many attributes so as to make that possible.
