    I forgot to say that the Epson Scan software can save files in the following formats: BMP, JPG, TIF, PDF. For photos JPEG produces the smallest file sizes, but it has a lossy compression algorithm. I regard my scanned images as raw files and therefore I save them as TIFF files because this format is lossless. I will be pleased to receive any comments or questions that you may have.

      So, initial scan of photos should always be TIF? Then format from there after making a working copy? I am the labor guy and have the project of scanning the thousands of photos of my wife, who is the photography buff and my daughter’s family photos...groan. Hey, thumbs up on your Aloha shirt! Honolulu, Hawaii. Of course the V600 was selected because she does have negatives when she began shooting from the late ‘70s. She is also pro-Canon. Definitely will be using auto-mode. Aloha, Labor Guy.

      How do you turn on the scanner? I've got the power connected. I'd assume the power light would turn on automatically since there's no on/off button on the scanner at all. Why is my scanner not light up when power is connected at the back? Do I need to press any of the four buttons at the front to switch it on?

      And your comment is also very much appreciated! Thank you. I live in Thailand now and managed to retrieve a few thousand negatives from my home in the UK a couple of years ago. One day I might be able to retrieve the rest. The scanning process is quite boring and time consuming, but you soon get into a rhythm. If you are doing thousands just use the fully automatic mode and all you have to do is put the negatives in the holder and press the button. Once you have everything scanned in you can mess around with individual photos, but to do this for every photo would take weeks.

    I've had my V600 since February 2020 for my family history and records project, and love it. I've scanned documents, letters, thousands of photos, and am starting on color negatives. I typically scan high resolution .TIFs as source images I can reduce or manipulate for other applications later on. Some fairly old images from China, for which there are no negatives or full-sized prints, are pretty much 1.25-inch contact prints, and the ability to scan at resolutions up to 12800 dpi is a positive life saver. Not that I've gone that high yet! You can place several photos on the bed at once, and use the selection marquee to scan them individually. Additionally, the ability to create a searchable PDF from a document is very helpful toward transcribing or quoting sources.
    All in all, it's super easy to use, and the results are, in my opinion, outstanding.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 роки тому +2

      Great information! The quality of document scanning is excellent and - the same as you - I scan my negatives as TIF files. This is like a raw file - no compression, no loss, and you can convert into other formats after the initial capture. Interesting comment about creating PDF files, I haven't tried that yet. I tend to just scan images and not text, but this might be useful in the future. Since I bought the scanner I've been very pleased with it and have no regrets. Thanks for your comment!

    Nice, simple and clear guidance. Thanks, Phil. One comment - I may be repeating another post, but... The reason why I’ve invested in the Epson scanner is because some years back I took a number of negatives to a print store and paid for them to scan my negs. Only when I got the film and CDs back (yes - it was awhile ago!) and started to manipulate and print - did I discover the pixel number was so low that I could only print an 8x4 image. Utterly pixellated if I wanted to blow up to A4 (or equivalent). Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know. I learned my lesson the hard way.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Lois and thanks for your comment! My thinking was that I wanted to be in control of the scanning for exactly the type of problem you described. It's quick and convenient to send off the negatives and receive files back, but how have they been scanned? In addition to resolution, other settings need to be tweaked to get the best out of each photo. I would imagine that labs doing bulk scanning just use one setting for everything. It's time consuming doing it yourself, but for me it's worth while being in control of the end-to-end process.

      TIFF should be safe. I wish they would agree on a standard format for lossless files as they have done with jpg for compressed files. The camera manufacturers have their own proprietary RAW formats, Adobe has DNG, there is TIFF and others. If everyone just used one it would be a lot easier and you wouldn't find yourself in a situation where suddenly software stopped working with your file formats. Thanks for the comment!

      Ten bucks is a great deal if everything works and you can get hold of the missing parts for a reasonable price. I only ever use the negative holder for 35mm film and have never used the medium format holder. Mine was expensive because I live in Thailand, but I think the price for a new one is about $200 in the US. You will also need to get hold of some scanning software. hi, my parents really got surprised ! They are really happy to see all the photos ! Thanks to your video. :)
      I didn't use full auto mode because it failed to detect most of my mom very old negatives type and it will stop and popped up a window saying something like "fail to detect... ". But some negatives successfully detected and scan correctly but very few.
      I have one question, if i use professional mode to scan the negatives, the photos would have very strange color. Then i need to click on color correction button to make them correct. Is this normal? But after hitting the colour correction button the color of the photos will be very fine.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  Рік тому

      @@metheesaengow2859 Full auto mode is really just for scanning in lots of negatives as quickly as possible. It works quite well, but it isn't perfect and sometimes it will crop the photo incorrectly.
      You can get better quality with home mode or professional mode, but this takes a lot of time and these modes aren't really appropriate for scanning in thousands of negatives. I used full auto mode just to scan everything in quickly so that I could see what I had. Then I picked out the best photos and did higher quality scans with professional mode.
      Home mode is a simplified version of professional mode and there are no set adjustments to correct images. You need to analyze the problem with each image, apply different adjustments, and use trial and error to get the best result. There are lots of correction options in professional mode.
      I did another video about using the various scanning modes. ua-cam.com/video/-4QHJRU3dGE/v-deo.html

    Thanks for the video, Phil. I’m about to spend our Tier 3 lockdown - I live in South Yorkshire - sorting through thousands of old slides, photos, and negatives. I’ll then want to get them scanned, and have been havering between doing it myself or getting the job done professionally. I’m now leaning towards doing it myself, and this video was useful.
    One question, however: in the situation where you have both the old photo (6” x 4”, say) and somehow the negative has also survived, which would you suggest scanning? - the print or the negative?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 роки тому +1

      Pleasure! Crazy situation in the UK - the north has been hit particularly hard, but that's another story. It seems like a perfect time to do some mass scanning! I haven't tried a professional service, but I liked the idea of being in complete control of the process even though it is time-consuming. I would imagine that professional services just use standard batch settings and don't make adjustments for each negative to get the best result. This would be understandable because of time constraints.
      I think of a film negative as a digital raw file and a print as a processed JPG file. If the negative is available I would always choose to use it rather than the print. If the print is old it is probably faded and it may not have been developed accurately. If you have both you could always scan both to see how they compare, but my preference would be for the negative.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 роки тому

      It depends. You have to do a pre-scan first and then the actual scan time depends on your settings. It depends on resolution and how much digital image correction and enhancement you are doing. If you're scanning at high resolution and doing a lot of correction it's definitely minutes rather than seconds.

    Thanks for your comments about scanning negatives. I will apreciate if based on your experience, what would you say about the features the scanner has, that is to say, color restoration, dust removal and unsharp mask, in professional mode. Thanks

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 роки тому

      Hi Juan, the dust and scratch removal incorporates an IR scan to find defects and it works well. You could repair these things with an image editor such as Photoshop, but if there are a lot it could take a long time. Using this feature does slow down the scanning time, but it is probably worth it. If you are doing batch scans the automatic features (colour correction/sharpening) can save time, but they apply corrections universally and different images will normally require different degrees of correction. My preferred method when scanning in lots of negatives is to do minimal correction and just get the images scanned in. Once I've been through them I can then do editing on selective images. If you want to use scanning software to do image corrections, some people prefer the Silverfast software compared to Epson. It's a personal choice. Technically, they are very close but the Silverfast interface is a bit friendlier. However, I have found the Epson software to be more stable.

      Really? Thanks for letting me know, I had no idea. I wonder why that is? I live in southern Thailand and couldn't find it anywhere locally. I had to order through the local Epson agent and then wait quite a while for it to arrive. That was three years ago. I'd really like to be able to give you some alternatives and further information, but I have only used the V600 so any suggestions wouldn't be based on real experience. Sorry and good luck getting something suitable! Hopefully you'll be able to get some ideas on-line.

    Hi, great video. I just got my V600 and tried scanning some 35mm strips prior to watching this. Do you have any tips for putting the negative film strips correctly in the scanner, as when mine scanned, the images seemed to be split. By this, I mean that I did not seem to get individual images, just overlaps of each. I realise that this is my fault in how I put them in, however, despite my best efforts, I could not get a clean picture scan.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  4 роки тому +2

      The only problem I've had is scanning negatives that have been stored in canisters and are very curly. When they don't lie flat in the holder it can cause problems such as you mention. With these curly negatives I have tried putting books, etc, on them for a while to try to flatten them before scanning.
      It may not necessarily be your fault. It is the software that decides where to crop the individual frames in a strip of negatives and if it isn't sure where to crop this is why you may be seeing overlaps. Does this happen with every strip of 35mm negatives? On the strips that you have problems with are the images very clear? If it's old film and the images are faint, perhaps this is causing the problem because there isn't enough contrast? I'm just guessing here.

    I have some very old black and white negatives on Kodak Safety Film. I believe they are 22mm and are 2 negatives per strip. The photos were taken in 1955-1960. Most of the images are scanning in just fine, but sometimes they look fine on the preview screen, but once I save the image to the computer and open the file, it's so pixelated you can't tell what it is. Hi Nicole, this type of question is so difficult to answer remotely. I guess that preview uses a low resolution so yes, it could be a DPI problem. It's strange though that most are fine and this only happens on some. Are you using the Epson scan software? If so, which mode? Have you tried other scanning software? There was a special offer with Silverfast for Epson owners and I downloaded the Silverfast software for free. Maybe you will have better results with other software? Thanks! If you're using Full Auto Mode the scan software crops automatically and the black background will confuse it and give you a small crop - not the whole negative. Try changing the scan mode to one that has both a Preview and a Scan button. Click Preview first and when the image appears manually select the scan area by creating a marquee on the image. When you're happy, press Scan and it will scan the area that you selected. I think that Office, Home and Professional modes all have a preview option. When you first start the scan software you should see a dropdown menu under Mode which will let you select the various scan modes.

Whenever I make a video and watch it later I always realise that I forgot something. With web pages it's easy to edit, but not with videos. What I've found is that the reversed image should be oriented "up" as it lays in the holder, so that the correct view of the negative should be toward the bed. I place the negative strip in the holder so that the text (the film name and numbers) on the edges is backwards when viewing from the top.
      I don't believe there is any clarity issue if it's in upside-down, and one can always flip the image in image software.

      It allows you to scan multiple sheets and export them as one file, if you wish. I don't use the PDF feature, but there are different ways to do it. If you use the PDF button on the scanner, there is a dialog box that has Scan and Finish options. Load a document and click Scan to scan the first document. Repeat this procedure if you have multiple documents. When all documents have been scanned, click Finish to write all the individual scans to a single file.
      If you use the Epson Scan software to scan and save as a PDF, you should get a dialog box to continue or finish after each scan. Clicking the continue option will allow you to add more scans. When you click Finish, all the individual scans will be written to a single file.

      Regarding settings, negatives this size will be able to produce high resolution images. It depends really on the file sizes that you want to work with. First, decide what size files you want and then experiment with different resolutions to get the right size.
      One more thing. I've been playing around with the Silverfast 8.8 scanning software recently and it's quite nice. Hello Ann and thanks for your comment. You mean it doesn't come up when you press the start button? I've just been playing with this and none of the 4 buttons on my scanner do anything - PDF, E-mail, Copy, Start. I've only just realised because I don't normally use these buttons. I just open the Epson Scan program in Windows or use WIA support in Photoshop.
      I've spent a while looking on-line and it seems this is quite common. It started with Windows 10 and continued through to Windows 11. The scan software only references versions of Windows up to Windows 8.
      There are various fixes and suggestions on-line, but I've tried a few and my settings are already correct or what is suggested doesn't work. I may look into this further, but it will take time and - as I say - I don't usually use the buttons. I would just suggest starting Epson Scan manually with Windows - I assume you are using Windows.
      I've seen mentions of an Epson Creativity Suite program, which includes an Epson File Manager and this allows you to program the function of each button. However, it's not on my computer, it's not on the CD that came with the scanner, and I can't find it on-line.
      If I get to the bottom of this I may do a quick video, but it's not a priority for me at the moment.

      There are many people with boxes full of negatives and the initial scanning process takes a long time. You could send them away to be scanned, but I wanted to do it myself. Once you get into a rhythm you get quite quick at it. For my initial scanning I didn't apply a lot of correction because this slows down the scanning process. Will the V600 scan other formats like 110, 126 and large square negatives?. I'm looking to buy a negative scanner, but the only one that does the job I want is the V800/850, and they are very expensive. I've heard photographing negatives using a DSLR with a macro lens and lightbox is a good alternative, but others have said they don't produce good results compared to a scanner.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  4 роки тому

      It will scan anything, but for the formats you mentioned you will need to get third-party negative holders. These seem to be fairly easy to buy on-line. I have no experience photographing negatives with macro lenses and light boxes. It's possible - I seem to remember seeing a YT video - but I would imagine results are hit and miss. Using a scanner results in fairly consistent results and scanning software is designed for scanners.

      @@PhilUKNet Thanks for the info. Does the scanner scan the whole negative showing the sprockets, or does it automatically cropped the image when it's scanning?. I ask this because my aim is to scan them as they. I have a cheap and basic standalone 35mm and slide scanner that you connect via usb using holders to slide them through, but the scanner (or maybe it's the focus of the sensor) doesn't scan the negative in its entifely. It allows you to view the negative has its going through before you click snapshot.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  4 роки тому

      @@Embracing01 It's the software that determines this, not the scanner. When you put the negatives into the Epson negative holder it conceals the sprocket holes. When you scan you do a prescan first and then you have the option to select which part of the prescan you actually want to scan or the software will do it automatically. If you're doing a batch scan (all the frames in a film strip) the software will attempt to determine the edge of each frame and therefore every image will have slightly different dimensions. If you want to scan the sprocket holes you will have to forego the negative holder and then just manually select one frame at a time.

      My V-600 give me problems scanning 35 in the holders, went and bought the after market holders to hold 110 but havn`t found any for 126. But with the ongoing problem with it not working correctly with the holders I found that if I just lay the negative in the center from top to bottom of the scanner [ that will work for 35,110,126 ] that it will do a fine job , you dont have to worry about being straight as in my adobe 11 it will straighten them right up. Since I could never get it to work right with the holders I dont` know if it will separate the pics but with my method I just separate each with the marquise cutter and go for it. With the Adobe 11 once it`s sent over it takes about 3 min to crop and re colorize a negative and there is often 6 to a strip so that `s not to bad amount of time spent for each compared to the time spent in scanning. Soon I`m going to try those round wheel negatives that Kodak put out as I heard they are doable. For those who want instant gratification there`s an app on google play store for the smart phone that all you need to do is run the camera over the negative and it does the rest ready for archives or print but I only seen people doing 35 mm for that app. It`s on You Tube if you want to look for it.

      I had the same problem with my V-600 when I bought it about 2 yrs ago never could hash out what the problem was so I give up for the longest time. Then recently I decided to give it a go and still same problem but I discovered that if I just lay the negative in the center of the screen without the holder it did just fine and I didn`t have to worry about being too straight as I was using the Adobe 11 that came with the scanner and it would straighten the pics up. It turned out it was quicker and easier to just lay the negatives on the glass and be done with it. And on another note the 600 only notes to doing 3 kinds of film well I quickly found out it will do a fine job on the tiny 110 negatives just lay them in the center. I was scanning in home mode and tried like some said at 2400 dpi well those little 110`s give me some beautiful 4x6 prints but the scan time is lengthy about 15 min or more. I have yet to try for 126 film yet or the one from kodak that has the round negative wheel. Seems like my father bought every new kind as the came out 50 yrs ago. Another tip from the Tube was scan your B&W film in color mode any way as will enhance the original B&W better. I haven`t had the time to try it yet but according to other s the V-600 will convert B&W to color, that I will definitely give a try but I think it will rely on my adobe 11 program. I also tried like quite a few on the channels said to bring the color back on old color slides but but running the dbg gammbit didn`t work so well for me ,but I found that if I use the auto correct features in adobe and then once thru run a 2nd time [ each time it got better ] that I had good printable copies . So with my new method I saved time by just laying the negative in the scanner forgetting the holder ,then scan it on the dpi setting preferred and once i got it over to photo shop it would take about 3min to have a negative ready to print or save. So at least I`m on the trail now so to speak. Even though you posted 5 months ago this may still be of help to you as I know it takes some fiddling to set the negatives in the holders.

Obviously, the bigger your negative the bigger the image and better the IQ. I don't have any 120 myself, but medium format should be a lot better than 35mm. It will also depend on the quality of the original lens, exposure, and how the negatives have been stored - especially if they are very old. If the negatives have faded or there are scratches the problems will be very apparent on the scans.
      If this is a one-off exercise you could get it done professionally. I chose to do my own scans so that I had more control over the process and because I will also do more scanning in the future. Some people say they get better results with third-party scanning software. I just use the Epson software that came with the scanner to keep costs down and it's fine for my purposes.

I'm wondering if I any imperfections (scratches and such) will be very noticeable on my monitor? If so, I should know pretty quickly if I'll need a third party, if I plan to use certain negatives for larger prints in my home. I do think the medium format/120 negatives are pretty old--I wouldn't say they are older than around 1932, since my oldest aunt was born in 1930, and in these shots, she looks to be around two years of age. I believe they range from '32 until the late 40s or early 50s. Again, thank you for the reply and information!

      @@igna83 If you pixel peep the imperfections in old negatives will be very noticeable, but the scanner software does quite a good job. Epson uses its Digital ICE technology and yesterday I was playing around with Silverfast, which uses similar technology to remove dust and scratches. With these tools the scanner does an infrared scan first to detect imperfections and then corrects the image using this information. Once you get a digitised version out of the scanner that has had some correction you can do more correction in post-processing using Photoshop or another image editor. The copy of Silverfast I downloaded yesterday was free and I am currently evaluating it. If you are in the market for a scanner you may also want to download a copy. I'm not sure if it will be permanently free. It's quite nice and provides a few options not included with the Epson software.

I do plan to get the new Silverfast software so can use the money in that - thanks in advance !

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 роки тому

      Hi and thank you! I have no experience of the V850, therefore I can't advise you or make a comparison. All I can tell you is that the V600 performs well and meets the level of performance that I require personally. Epson make great products and I'm sure that the V850 is a very fine scanner. In fact, I just looked at a review by someone who scans in old negatives and has used Epson scanners for a long time. He says that the increase in clarity with the V850 is noticeable compared to previous models.
      So, the V600 is very good, but the V850 is better. The bottom line question is whether the increase in performance justifies the increase in price, and the answer to that question will be different for everyone. If quality is very important to you - maybe you are working professionally - then I guess the extra money buying the V850 is justified even if the increase in quality is fairly small.
      If very good is good enough for you, but great isn't necessary, then maybe the V600 will suffice? It may not be a good as the V850, but it's still a fine scanner.
      Regarding the Silverfast software, Epson must have some kind of collaboration with Silverfast. The Silverfast software is now bundled with Epson scanners and available free to Epson owners. Some people really like it and I think they find the user interface more friendly. Personally, I quite like the Epson software. Good luck with your decision! I don't think you'll be disappointed with either choice.

      @@SanjayChadha @Sanjay Chadha Sorry Sanjay, I may be wrong there. I only looked at the V850 and saw that it came with the Silverfast software. However, I got a free version of the software from the Silverfast site because it was for a V600. When you are batch scanning you just load up the negative holder, press the button, and it scans in all the frames. You don't need to manually select anything.
      What I did was to batch scan in everything at a lower resolution with minimum processing. If you scan at high resolution and do lots of image correction it takes a long time. Once everything was scanned in I was able to view what I had and then I did a higher quality scan on selected images. It's up to you, of course.

Silverfast has also crashed on me a few times, but Epson Scan has always been very stable.
      There's quite a steep learning curve and getting the results you want can involve quite a bit of trial and error. The review I read of the V850 was written by a guy who runs a professional service scanning in old photos and negatives. Good question! I'm not an expert in such matters, so I had to look on-line. Here are two things I found, which should hopefully answer your question.
      "Resolution relates to the fineness of detail that a scanner can achieve, and is usually measures in dots per inch (dpi). The more dots per inch a scanner can resolve, the more detail the resulting image will have."
      (pctechguide.com)
      "The first number (6400 dpi) is the highest “optical” resolution your scanner is capable of, and therefore the highest dpi you should ever scan with. The second number (9600 dpi) is often the highest resolution it's capable of scanning digitally - faking the results by interpolating the data."

      From what I've read, the term "DPI" or dots per inch is misleading, and is used primarily in printing.
      My understanding is that a digital image will have a single term for pixel resolution (300 PPI/DPI, for instance), and a 2-term pixel measurement for height and width (eg. 1024 x 968).
      Printing processes can have different DPI measures for height and width.

There's also a company called Better Scanning that makes holders with variable suspension height. This will enable you to do the same thing more conveniently without so much messing around. At 34 mg. the 110 film was quite huge compared to the 20 meg pic. The Plustek does not cope with medium format negative. Re-photographing negatives is very time consuming and you must also own a light box and the camera censor my be kept absolutely parallel to the film plain as using a macro lens gives you a very shallow depth of field. I have used this method. If you are copying negatives in this manor you also have a extra post processing to turn the negative into a positive. When like, like me and Phil, you have thousands of negatives to digitise initial quality is not a concern especially as the old images are probably flawed anyway.
