6yrs later, and this is still outstanding.
100% my favorite ski lesson channel on UA-cam. I'm 60, and have been skiing since I was 3. I'm still learning to improve my technique, and all of your videos are gold! Thank you!
I learned to ski with a help of this and other videos on youtube, on 3rd day I was riding on blue trails, doing proper parallel turns.
Also I noticed that many people who are skiing for years can't explain what exactly they're doing.
This video is great!
Love this video: great sound quality and music, likeable dudes.
Thank you very much Emma! / Kerr & Jens
Yes I do want to see Kerr again. Thank you
I’ve been skiing for 50 years with my feet glued together and my body turning my skis - this is going to be painful breaking all my bad habits.
it is painful but so worth it!
It's worth it. This is because the new design of the skies and make your ride easier and less motion
I'm trying to imagine turning with my body and it feels weird 😂 but I can't ski 🎿 anyway.
love it going skiing tommorow really helped
I love how Zen these videos are, super relaxing to watch. Makes me want to get out and ski more too.
Thank you for the video! I'm also *mostly* self taught, so these technical breakdowns are super helpful to up my game!
Would like to say that your videos inspired me to step up my skiing and push myself even further. Thank you for all the videos, they are really helpful, keep up the good work!
Best video yet that shows those subtle little movements to start carving, love it! thanks guys
Excellent guys, the three steps are so right for the beginners and for racing. Upper body stable, arms to the front, hips will follow. Great job.
New to skiing, later in life, but love it! You guys make awesome videos. Have helped me a ton!
I have been re-learning how to ski over the last year or so. I knew about keeping the bottom half busy and putting that weight on the outside ski, but I was starting my turns with driving my knees.
I have a feeling starting at the ankles will help me roll in nice and smooth. Great video!
Amazing tutorial. I've watched many vids on carving and this one is the best. Very helpful pointers.
It's a good video.
I like your videos just to remember what I have learned when I became an instructor.
I watch them over and over again to remember and improve my teaching skills.
I started out skiing park only but now carving and ripping around the whole mountain is one of my favorite things.
perfect explanation, more videos please ( narrow stance drills and a-frame problems)
Great duo - more please on ski technique - short and long turns - rhythm - drills - the pole plant...please!
Can't wait for the skiing season. I love this channel!!
I agree can’t wait 😊
same, I´am so pumped up! :D
Meee too
Thanks! I will try this next week in Italy.
Great video, look forward to putting some of these tips into practice next week.
excellent video. Learned a ton about carving. Excited to geometry this stuff out. Thanks
Thanks! Cant wait to go and try do it
This is what I need to work on. Proper technique. I make it down fine but I know it could improve
I really loved this video would like to see more tutorials like these!
The best channel. Thanks. Going to use this God willing.
Nice video, love the channel. Off to Laax tomorrow and watching all your tutorials in the hope of picking up some gems.
thanks for the tutorial..really helpful..lets skiing
PERFECT EXPLANATION
Great video guys. Will try and practice this today. 👍🏻
You are great,Sirs !!

Great easy to remember tips!
Thank you guys so much!
omg my gopro just came in and i just keep watching ski videos. temps are now at 50’s and 60’s in michigan, i can’t wait for the season to start and carve again 😫
Good video. Going to try this out in VT tomorrow.
Great tutorial, 🙏 thanks
Awesome tutorial
Love your vids! 💙💙
This is a great video! Thanks guys!
i've been carving wrong for 3 years :O I did have a few times where i did exactly as was instructed and the carves were so smooth, but i forgotten what i just did to get it lol
thank you so much for this, will have to try next time im on the trails.
You guys make a great team -- more Kerr!
basically using the side cut just like on a snowboard... gonna try skiing this winter now
Super poetic instructor!!! 💫⛷💫
Great video!
Nice, very clear and helpful!
THX guys! Very easy for understand all what you do/

Don´t know how to make a heart shaped smiley... hearts ;)
Really good video, super helpful ⛷
Great lesson
You are the best bro ) really helped me
Thanks!
Love ur vids
what a cool dude
Nice demonstration.
Awesome video
A couple more hints / ideas. Be sure to start these exercises I am a very gentle flat slope. I find that many skiers who have actually skied several years can't do the first 2 or 3 top of your steps when they are going at a very controlled speed. But as they get going faster they get panicky and start to twist and start to Skid their skis to slow down. I picked up this carving technique back in the 70s in a book by Harold harb. And this was on what they would Now call straight skis". Of course that turns became long radius GS style turns. But they were and still are a blast. I tell my students, they paid a bunch of money for this new site cut technology. And turning the old-fashioned way by skidding the skis around it's a waste of money. Very good video by the way:-)
I am used to what you called skidding on turns and im trying to stop it, but i cant quite get the carving technique right
Great stuff, Jens and Kerr! Well articulated! It would be cool to see a close-up or animated illustration of what putting the skis on edge as you roll on your ankles looks like. Is it as simple as tipping from one side to the other like carving toe-side and heel-side on a snowboard?
Great! Cheers to the new teacher!
I will tell Kerr :)
Thank you, appreciate it Swing Orange.
I wand to know more about feisty mother nature and her g-forces. Awesome work guys.
Haha she is feisty indeed :P
Nice tip
More!!!
Merci
I would love a video on how to ski powder!
Maybe that can be taken care of ;)
Oli Owens just use all your power and push it into the snow it is easy
Great video, just what I needed, I would love to improve my turns. Now, I just need snow, haha.
Yeah, you cant really make a snowman without snow :(
SpaceMonkey37 True. Where I live, we don't get as much snow as we used to.
Where I live we usually dont get alot of snow at all. i think it has been like 4 or 5 years since we got over 30 cm. but on Monday we got around 40 cm! (We got alot of black marks that day for throwing snowballs xD)
SpaceMonkey37 Haha, enjoy it while it lasts :D
I got my fingers crossed for you to get some snow :)
Poweder snow❤️
I really want to Learn this
This Kir (?) guy looks so smooth and elegant while skiing. :o
Just curious where they are skiing? Loved the video!
Actively engaging ankle and knee movement in your turn is going to cause you to be off balance either fore or aft especially at the final phase of your turn where you will end up seeing over rotation. Your knees and ankles will naturally flex throughout the turn, but to achieve a balanced position grip should come from the directional bend in the waist.
I've just searched for video's like this, and then u come, thank you :)
+Maldo Haha awesomeness thank you 😀
Stoked you enjoyed it Maldo!
Haha, you guys know each other. Now I feel silly and still jealous to give over the reins to Kerr ;)
As a total noob this is very helpful to understand the breakdown of the positioning throughout the turn. I’m finding it difficult to control my speed when going on edge rather than sliding at the end of each turn. Maybe that’s the point but it’s scary to a new skier!
Mee too
No instructor today but this video let's test out this carving techniques.
What kind of poles are best for skiing/carving?
like it.
Thanks for this guys- really helpful. Can I ask is the weight distribution even on both ski’s in the carve turn?
@Austin definitely the outside ski…. that doesnt make much sense
Guys your videos are Awesome! Nice Tutorial very helpful 👌🏼
Whats the music You used in the video?
Thank you very much :D It is unpublished music by Philly Joseph. You will not find these tunes here but some other good ones. soundcloud.com/phillyjoseph
Stomp It Tutorials Ah okay, thanks!
Dude I love this channel your doing a great job but I’d love for you to try to upload more often
Haha, I would like to as well. It just takes me a few days to make 1 video.
3 days?! it takes me 3 weeks!
Feisty girl and her g forces... I just got that subtle reference.
Even though I go to ski training 2 times a week, I still found this video cool! thx for the content :D but I did not hear you say anything about space between the legs. This is important to keep the balance when you use your knees.
Thanks a lot. I think he did in step one but just briefly. You are right its important.
Yeah at 1:37 but he does not explain why or anything like that. I think a beginner to carving would not have noticed that he said that though.
Yes, the space between the legs is important. I only touched on it during the basic position explanation. A hip width stance should be maintained almost everywhere when skiing. Adjustments are typically made when skiing powder, vaiaibles, short skidded turns and moguls where it may come narrower for increased surface area and agility. Thanks for you feedback.
The stance widens the deeper you go into turn.. Otherwise the inside ski starts to chew outside boot, and it pushes the outside ski up.. There are loads of other neat tricks to adjust the turn and advance it but this video kinda put the consensus of how to start going for carving turns.
SpaceMonkey37 so a beginner skiing cant listen? I understood everything in th3 video
Where is this? Awesome video BTW.
More hip angulation required
Note at 6:06 your inside knee is bent more then your outside, that is due to the lack of hip angulation.
Keep the body vertical and angle the hips to the same angle as the skis are tilted over.
That way both legs are the same distance from the snow to your hips and thus both knees will bent to the same angle through the turns.
If they are not bent the same you are inducing rotation forcing you to have to swing your arms, you should be able to keep both hands in front of you at all times, as if you are carrying a small tray in front of you and not have to counter rotation.
If you need to counter by swigging the arms that tells you that something else isn't right, and that is mostly lack of hip angulation.
Loose the pole dragging habit completely, it is masking a rotation problem.
In short if you need to use the force of your swinging arms to leverage the turns then the ski edges are not doing all the turning themselves and they should be if done right.
What are you talking about? The inside knee will always be bent more than your outside, especially during high speed carving turns. Just google image "ski racer" and tell me their inside knee is bent the same as the outside
Thank you for the carving video. I ski many days at the week during the season and I like to advance to new styles and better technique, this is you helping me with.
After practice this, especially the rolling ankles, and studied the video, I now have noticed that I can’t keep the basic position when I move down the hill. My feet and knees is twisting a lot to make the skies parallel in the basic position, and my knees is moving towards each other when I flex down, and not lengthwise the skies. This gives me a very locked position, and I can only force the uphill knee to move toward the snow.
When not thinking about this new knowledge my skies end up in a very wide stance to make room for my knees to work. Last year I brought the Stomp It Tutorials to advance to jumping, and hit boxes, but every time I land a 50-50 on a slim box I slam the knees together, and landed like a steel-rod and not a nice spring like you, and my popping is good at home but terrible on skies. Now I know what happened. I need to go to the bootfitter again, and adjust my canting, or event get new boots allowing my feet to a more V-shape, to open up my knees, to align with the lengthwise axis of the ski.
Thank you again.
Maybe it’s because of my stance, but I have it very hard to go from switch to forward, at nearly any speed, maybe you can make some technique tips on that too.
The Dane from Norway. :-)
Love ur videos!! What type of ski’s are you guys running in this vid? Looks like freeride?
We were both skiing rather wide freestyle/park skis. I was skiing Line Blend and Kerr was skiing Faction CT 2.0
Stomp It Tutorials nice! I have the rossignol S3.. they are 98 under foot.. not really freeride but i dont ride them centered. I have a park pair (nordica OMW) centered. But the rossignol are more playfull on the piste.. which do you prefer for learning?
Stomp It Tutorials and do you guys ride them centered? Thnx for the advice
1:15 it feels good to turn tricks
Haven gone skiing for 3 years. Needed to brush up. Fucking ready to ride now thanks gents.
Hi, could you make a tutorial on how to drop a cliff please
1. Leave your brain at home.
2. Go out and ski and find that drop!
for anyone reading, I really can't stress enough how important step one (proper posture) is. 99% of newbies wont do this and automatically start leaning back, esp. when they are about to lose control. dont do this. keep your knees infront of your toes. even with powder, where you're supposed to lean back a bit....usually, people lean WAY to much.
best tutorial (I'm a begginer/intermediate skier) I hate when skiing channels go about 15 mins to explain something that takes 2 mins. Thumbs Up !
Are you from Sweden
Aaah Its Ya Boii Kerr McWilliam!!!
Lol
great ski carving my dude
How did you ride the ski’s in this video? Centered? I have rossignol S3 and have them mounted at factory.. what do you guys prefer?
I ride my park skis at -2cm
Turn up
What foot would I put more weight on?
This video has a high quality content, keep it up!
Thank you :).
What Lange boots do you guys use and why? Excelent videos as always
Lange RX 130. It's the same shell as the Race boot, just a softer plastic. I like a 2 piece boot like this one as it's something I've tried and tested. I use it for everything from park to piste to powder. I like the fact that you get good support from the cuff and the position it allows on the skis. Boots are quite a specific piece of kit to the individual.
Kerr McWilliam I've always used Lange boots with 4 straps, I'm thinking of trying Dalbello's il Moro 3 piece 3 strap construction. Did you ever try something similar? If yes what made you stick to the 2 piece 4 straps construction. Thanks alot for the reply!
I haven't tried any 3 piece construction boots except for in the shop, never skied with them. I've used Salomon SPKs, and Atomic Waymakers before is the only other boots I've really skied. My reason for choosing a 2 piece boot is quite simply I always have and I like it and for that reason I've stuck with it. I find they ski better, but that's my opinion. Whatever works for the individual at the end of the day. I also run a BOOSTER strap rather than the stock one which I find enhances the boot and makes it more progressive.
Kerr McWilliam Thanks a bunch for the replies they have been really helpful! It seems so hard to find up to date ski boot reviews. I've been watching this chanel for a long time, excelent advices and vids, thanks for it all!
Thank you TXT900, I'm glad you found them to be so. Ski boot choice is a tough one, but arguably the most important. Apologies if you knew what I'm about to say already but, try a variety of boots and find what works for your foot shape the best and it is very important to make sure you can flex the boot properly while being appropriate to your level of skiing (remembering a warm shop will make the plastic much softer compared to early/mid winter temperatures on the mountain!) Cheers
when you initiate the turn, do you move knee first or roll ankle first?
For a carve it's a more tipping based movement with a lateral extension across the skis. The steering movements are passive and are dictated by the turning radius of the ski and your ability to drive (in the forceful sense) the ski
Would love to see a cork 3 tutorial :)
I'm a bit late but I was wondering how a centered stance on skis changes carving. If you're 'on your toes', it sometimes feels like the weight is too far forward (towards the nose).
ianyapxw
Gravity wants to pull your body down the fall line.
As long as you’re skiing in the forward direction, down the slope...the idea is to keep your weight harmonized with the natural forces of the world (i.e. gravity).
If you want to see the complete opposite, weight shifted backwards, up the mountain (NOT forward, NOT down the mountain)...then check out “jet turns”. It was a fad, maybe 1970-1980’s. Essentially turning on the tails of the skis. People thought jet turns looked cool at the time, but nowadays the technique is considered poor / ugly / unsafe.
