Good explanation and sounds true and possible. A perfect solution for Africa too where the sun is so tense. We will save a lot of trees cut for making charcoal and firewood. Come Home Cantina West. Come to Africa - Tanzania.

Thanks for reviewing side by side. I'd think not being able to easily find focus for the last model is the biggest issue. ...I like that it has the holes, in theory working in a windy location IF focus can be achieved. The gap for rear access on the "Cadillac" is a great idea. It might also allow wind to spill away from the cooker in some situations.

The pots should have a matt black coating. I have cooked 1/3 oz. burgers on a black granite slab with a non-reflective surface. Just left it out in the sun all morning. It stored plenty of heat. A friend was so impressed with it that he had a picnic table made with a cooking slab square in the center. It won't replace a propane stove for everyday use unless it's in an equatorial desert, but it works very well when conditions are right. Plus it's so cool!

Thanks for the comments , if I get in a jam now I know to use my bar top to cook ! If it doesn't crack maybe a peice of black granite with solar reflectors around the outside underneath might make the perfect cooker.

I used to have a sun chef. It worked quite well, though it didn't capture as much heat as the solar burner. The down side of a lightweight oven is that a very strong gust (100 mph) enough to tear down trees will pick it up and destroy it even if it is held down by 100 lbs of rocks. I am hoping that 200 lb on a solar burner will keep it from flying away and smashing. We don't get hurricanes or tornadoes here, but we do get micro-bursts.

did he said about temperature - of sun first when he presented , the climate condition temperature is the key factor later all the devices works so much , but i do have doubts how that the heat converted and stored in batteries so that all the three times of a day and night can be cooked for a family
c the conversion with 1000 or 2000watts would support 4 to 8 in a family for day to day cooking
invention done just to drink or to boil water what is the level of usage for daily family cooking that is the key

Solar cooking versus charcoal burning: One gust of wind can topple all the solar cookers in this video. The people who are cooking everyday with charcoal do not ask for portable kitchens. They just want heat to cook with. They just want a solid and stable place to cook. Therefore think about shaping the legs of your cookers in such a way that they can fit in
cement blocks with standard measurements. The reflectors themselves could be framed in a cement frame after they reach their destinations. Since the sun moves around, the cooker needs to rotate. as well. With two or more replectors per household, they can cook enough food on sunny days for the rainy days. Please let me know if you want me to say more in order to save the trees.

I guess this kind of stoves so cool but I have a question about their security. What are the risks to user's view over time of use? Another main question is if this parabolic system is more efficient than that others made in thermal box system. That are slower in one dish prepare however they have capacity to prepare more than one at a time and if you forgot it, the food will not burn. For this reason they could be more compacts. Please, what do you think about these questions?

    • @winstonsharpe4080

Tom, surprisingly the dish does not get that hot, ambient at most but the focal point of the beam will scorch your skin off in a minute, hundreds of degrees in that point, best to build a dish with the pot sitting out front so if it leaks it falls not on the dish. I have built a couple of cookers with a rotisserie base and an adjustment to hold the cooking pot away from the focal point once it starts boiling.

Ummm...to make it a viable experiment, i.e. scientific-method without extraneous variables, you need to use the same type of cook pot on each test too as different materials, and their composition (thickness and metallurgical properties), will vary the heating rate. Also each mirror needs to be properly aimed (maximum focus) and it needs to be done simultaneously at the same time of day.

    • @mavamQ

That's where I went. He should have had 5 pots, to heat at the same time to make up for any clouds passing. He could have found the proper position with a sheet of paper at the focal point very quickly.

Amazing, is the U.S. Army built one at their Natick MA research facility that is still available for use out at White Sands AFB. Was designed to create extremely high temperatures. Uses venetian blinds to shield the dish and a large mirror to focus onto the dish which focuses onto the focal point furnace which is housed in like a room the size of an intermodal shipping container. Might even be one or more of those containers. I totally want to build one to make a power plant and do research regarding metal foundry operations potential capabilities with augmentation via gas or other fuel sources. I think ideally a closed loop generator like an external combustion generator would be the best idea so not to waste water unless potentially desalinating salt water in the process.... where then I think mining operations and possible chemical operations can be had with the saline source system design. Parabolic Troughs have a lot of potential capabilities too I think... though I'm not as confident of metal ore refining or foundry operations unless maybe like some sort of falling design with like a standing vertical trough maybe? Seems even to preheat the material would benefit to reduce fuel consumption and costs.

I will bet I can teach the designers a thing or two. For example. I heated a larger area using the same space. This is still a hit and miss in its infancy. No one seemed interested 24 years ago.

Could one use a telescope clock to keep the unit perfectly aimed at the sun? What would happen if someone put a Stirling engine at the focal point, and had it drive a generator? Imagine ten thousand of these running in parallel, clocking the sun with optimum collector placement, generating power into a capacitor bank. Seems like a COTS solution, but still has that pesky 10-year reflective quality limitation. One last thought: would have been nice to know the temperature of the water before it was placed in front of the collector.

My CookUp200 will bring 1L water to a full rolling boil, in East Tennessee, in about 15 or 16 minutes during high noon - depending on the wind.
The failure was a user failure, not an equipment failure.
The other units we misaligned also.
I wonder if the Cantina brand would fare the best if it were someone other than Cantina putting the units to test? In other words this "test" could have been done in a more fair and better thought out manner. It was not very objective.

The solar vacuum tube cookers are way better, way safer and can fit in a small backpack. Also cheaper at about $100-$200.

I was really looking forward to this comparison, Well you started out Good by giving temperatures of the water on the first two parabola's What Happened? you didn't give water temps after that, (you also did not show the bottom of the pot or a reflection of the bottom of the pot with the focal cone, at the beginning and end of each boil test) then you stopped giving the temps, so your comparison test for me was a Fail, Incomplete info, to bad cause you had the info you just Failed to provide it, just like the Last parabolic you tested.

Gary, umm, boiling water is 100 degrees Celsius. So, "rolling boil" means just that temperature.

Sz. Wat... he said the last cooker got to 140 degrees but failed to boil. That means he's quoting temps in Fahrenheit, not Celsius.

I thought a full rolling boil meant 212F. Anything higher than that would be steam.

Not a fair comparison. Far too many variables left unaccounted for.

Duuude... why the hell does he go from using a black pot in the first demonstration... to using a reflective silver pot in the second demonstration?
Mind blowing how little he understands how the device works.... not surprising he isnt wearing eye protection.

You made a grammatical error. When you said which cooker boils a liter of water the fastest what you should have said which cooker boils water the quickest.
