An interesting thing happens when a great professional athlete dies. History is rewritten. The consumate professional becomes a mythic figure. There is a prevailing overtheme in this documentary that Gilles Villeneuve was all emothion and passion with little or no intelligence to his racing like some sort of motorracing idiot savant. The notion that Gilles Villeneuve was reckless is ignorant of the racer. Villeneuve was the best driver on the grid in every way the year he perished. He was better than Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Didier Pironi, Nigel Mansell, and even Niki Lauda. I witnessed his entire career just like that of Jacques and Ayrton Senna. He evolved into a very meticulous and methodical professional who would have easily won the title in 1982 and beyond. Jacques Villeneuve, albeit a driver with a different style, was the reflection of his supremely gifted father, not the antithesis. To suggest Jacques Villeneuve was somehow smarter than his dad is counter intelligent and disrespectful of Gilles and his genius. This apple fell very close to the tree.
