    Jerika, I love your cozy soap making channel. I have used Tallow, from Grass Fed Cow, organic and Non-GMO. Yes, it cost more than a few years ago, but it is best for the skin. I personally make the soap for just a few quantities of clientele, but not in my online store. It is an amazing soap. Calendula and Chamomile Botánica Herbs, I personally grow them in my back yard. I use it for soaps and body Butter Lotions and Whipped Soap Scrubs. The combination is amazing for extremely sensitive skin. Usually, I am always sold out on these products. Also, Hibiscus Botánica bulb. Hope you grow them all in your garden. Luffas too love it.😊

    I loved this video Jerika! I’ve been using our farm grown lard & tallow to make skincare for the last couple of years & selling it through our online store. We started our hobby farm on 80 acres back in 2017 and wanted to find a way to use the more of the whole animal by utilizing the fats. I was so thankful to find your early soap making videos as I learned so much about technique from you. Lard soaps are so gentle & nourishing while tallow based creams provide ultra-hydration for dry, winter skin. Thanks for making videos & sharing your life!

    My favorite go to tallow makers for reference are Delizia Naturally, am Australian tallow based product and soapmaker , and also Ansa Smitt of Saponify from South Africa.
    Because you added honey to that balm, you actually should also add a preservative! Honey is only self preserving as a stand alone product, but when added to other ingredients it will now grow all kinds of things. Honey contains water naturally. It is the enzymes in honey that make it self preserving on it's own, but due to it's water content when added to other ingredients the it will grow bacteria and mold. Sorry, but it's best to know these things before selling!

      I just got into a long conversation with another UA-camr about a formula she made and added honey and no preservative, she thinks since anhydrous it doesnt need it but she added honey to it, so I asked her and she told me twice since anhydrous it doesnt need it, Im like ugh!!!! Ok you make yours (which she sells) I’ll make mine.

    • @paulalynrider4009
      @paulalynrider4009 16 днів тому +1

      @@roxaneevans1187 ya I see this a lot and it's a whole thing for sure! The moment you add the honey it becomes hydrous as honey naturally contains water. You keep doing it right!

    • @JerikaZimmerman
      @JerikaZimmerman  16 днів тому +2

      There does seem to be quite a split on this topic. I have done a ton of research and saw it both ways! I’ve also looked at tallow cream sellers and this one very big brand lists only tallow, olive oil, a probiotic blend (which is proprietary) and honey as the ingredients in their tallow cream. I do agree that it’s best to be safe than sorry, so future batches I’ll add some preservative for sure.

    This is the first of your videos I’ve seen and I’m now really intrigued by tallow/lard based soaps. As a person with sensitive skin, I appreciate the “plain” soap.
    Your garden looks wonderful! It looks like the previous owner left a good foundation for you to build on (I’m jealous of the green house 😊). One suggestion for the branches and other tree debris is to find an out of the way place on your property to make a brush pile. Sticks take a long time to breakdown in a compost bin and can make turning the compost a pain. A brush pile creates habitat for pollinators and small wildlife.

    Yes seeds! I’ve been growing from seed for a long time. Keep trying. Seeds want to grow. It’s been a few years that I can not use chemicals dyes and fragrance. I grow and harvest my organic herbs to infuse oils. You might think about getting a wood chipper it will pay for its self. Don’t get a cheap one you need it to be a good size to manage your property for years to come. It’s so beautiful. Makes me miss Washington 💚 loving the content.
    One more garden tip: go to the garden almanac put in your zip code and it will tell you exactly when to start from seed, how to start and when to transplant or start seeds in in your garden. Best reference for seed growing and it’s free😇

    I would say, stick with chickens for awhile until you get very comfortable with. Feed them meat, worms & scraps of veggies. Cracked corn is also good for them. The eggs may come out a dark yellow to orange yolk. If you have roosters make sure to cut the spurs. If you want some flavor in the eggs you can add cayenne pepper.

    Erica, I try and keep my soaps as natural as possible, when using essential oils, (which cost a lot more) do you use the same amounts as you would a fragrance oil. I’m struggling with this, as they cost sooo much more and it’s seems counterintuitive as they are also a lot more volatile, or contain high levels of volatile compounds

    • @JerikaZimmerman
      @JerikaZimmerman  16 днів тому

      That is a great question and a very important topic! There seems to be a divide on opinions whether honey in an anhydrous cream requires a preservative. In my research, I’ve determined a small amount of honey is fine. If I were to make a lot of this and sell it, I’d likely use a preservative. But for my small batch, I decided not to.

      @@JerikaZimmerman thanks for answering too. I am skin expert, already writing for our SOAP MAGAZINE, you can look in it, as well. It's my professional duty, do ask about this, and it's up to a maker to do the decision, what to do about making product. Honey, is not very welcome in cosmetic formulation, because of making unstable medium for growing bacteria, even with proper preservation systems. This is professional stand point, of course, decison is on the maker and their consumers, all the best!
